Student Information Packet for Student Service Learning

This Student Information Packet is to be used for Student Service Learning (SSL) that occurs outside of the school. The service may be applied toward the graduation requirement or for meritorious service recognition. The information below and the associated resources should help you document and receive credit for SSL activities. It should also help you plan, successfully take action, and reflect on service learning activities performed.

1. Each middle and high school has a Student Service Learning Contact. These individuals approve all SSL activities that will be completed, except for the infused activities within the Frederick County Public Schools’ essential curriculum. To find your school’s Student Service Learning Contact, click here.

2. Prior to service, every student must receive permission from the school Student Service Learning Contact to assure that the planned activity meets the MD Service Learning Guidelines and qualifies as SSL.

3. The Maryland Student Service Learning Guidelines (click here to open) list the Seven Best Practices for SSL and “What SSL activities should and should not do”. Each of the seven best practices is described with an example.

4. You will need an adult mentor in the community to help you with the project and to verify its completion. This individual should not be a family member or close relative.

5. To receive permission, complete the “Description of the Planned Service Activity” form and have the school’s SSL Contact review and approve it.

6. All SSL activities include: “Preparation, Action, and Reflection”. A brief description of each can be found by clicking here.

7. Once your project or activity has been approved, it’s time for you to begin.

8. As you plan and conduct the project, complete the form entitled “Record of Student Service Learning Activities Outside of School.” You must complete the Preparation, Action and Reflection sections prior to receiving credit.

9. This form is the documentation required to receive SSL credit and must be completed and turned in to your school SSL coordinator to receive service hours.

Former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “Our true destiny is not to be ministered unto but to minister to ourselves and to our fellow man.”

Good Luck with your service project. There is no greater deed than to serve others.
