Acupuncture: Another Tool of Medicine

Dr. Bridget Early has integrated the practice of medical acupuncture into her family medicine practice. She has studied medical acupuncture since 2003 and is a member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She completed further training in China in 2007, and continues to train and refine her skills every year.

Karin Rossi, R.N., has also studied acupuncture and is certified by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association to provide ear acupuncture to assist in recovery and behavioral health.

Acupuncture does not replace standard, Western medicine, but it can be a useful alternative for many problems. If you are diagnosed with strep throat, we will most likely prescribe antibiotics, Western-style. If you have a chronic problem such as asthma or joint pain, and the various methods of treating this condition through Western medicine do not seem to be working, have significant expense or potential serious side effects, then acupuncture is a good alternative. It is also very helpful for acute or chronic musculoskeletal problems such as back pain.

The needles are hair-thin, and you don’t have to look at them! A skilled practitioner inserts the needles so that you may not even feel them going in. Once the needles are inserted into the appropriate key points, you rest in a quiet, dim room for a while and let your body adjust to the changes the needles facilitate. Patients have said, “I could feel the muscles in my shoulder start to jerk after a few minutes, and then they eased up and it felt so much better!” Some patients feel immediate relief; others feel changes in their bodies hours later, or even the next day. Acupuncture does not work for every patient, every time, but some patients swear by it.

Most private health insurance, and Medicare and Medicaid, do not currently cover acupuncture treatments. If you are interested, ask our office about payment plans, and check your insurer for coverage requirements.
