Grade 7 Social Studies Project – Life in British North America (assigned Nov 5)

Evaluate the conditions of everyday life for diverse peoples living in British North America in the mid-1800s, including Aboriginal peoples, African-Canadians and Acadians.

In the 1800s, British North America took up approximately the same area of land as Canada does today. However, life for people living here was very different than it is today. In this project you will investigate one group of people living in BNA and learn what their daily life and struggles were.

Choose from one of the following peoples living in BNA during the 1800s:

- An Aboriginal nation – for example Mi’kmaq

- Acadians (French)

- Metis

- British

Research and collect information about lifestyles at the time such as: transportation, employment, religion, health, food, education, pastimes, housing, inventions, music, etc.

Research and gather additional information relevant to your group such as: discrimination, laws, opportunities, hardships, immigration, land, etc.

Use the information to do the following:

1. Write a report on the people.

• Include an “introduction” page with general info about who they were.

• Organize your information in at least 5 categories. – one category per page

• Include at least three illustrations.

• Include a map showing where they lived at the time.

• Include a cover page

• Include a bibliography

Then Choose one of the following displays/presentations:

1. Create a poster which illustrates your information.

• It should be colourful and eye-catching as well as accurate.

• It must contain at least 8 pictures or graphics, half of which must be hand-drawn (you can’t just download pictures and glue them on Bristol board.

• It must contain written explanations for all visuals.

2. Create a 3D scene or diorama which demonstrates an aspect of life for that group of people.

• (About the size of the shoebox.)

• This must be accompanied by a paragraph explaining how you made it and what is shows.

You will be using a tri-fold display to present your project to the class.

Each group must show their project to the class on the due date in the form of a mini-presentation. All parts are due the same day.
