Race reports/Upcoming race information

Race report feedback Chamberlain Capital Classic - 07 October 2017 21.1 km (Elbert Loubser):

The rain earlier in the week and during Friday evening was most welcome. Hmmm, once again I was reminded of the intensity of thunder claps (versus those one encountered in Durban). The decibels of these rolling rumbles and claps, still scares me once in a while. Fortunately, the rain was such, that the fields at Phobians were not flooded. So, we were still allowed to make use of the 'top field' for parking, approaching from 'The Link street' side.

As there was still some drizzling early morning there were additional preparations made, which included: 1) All the available Run-A-Way gazebos were erected at the 'end point' watering table (Stein). 2) The MoC was already up and about at 02:00 am, as the sound system speakers needed some necessary 'plastic bag/raincoat' protection (Neels Vermeulen). 3) Pieces of cardboard on the tables and frequent wiping off of the tables to minimise the moisture effect whilst filling in race numbers (yip, ballpoint pens seize every opportunity to refuse the flow of ink, precisely when needed to write or as Neville Muir previously shared: 'The cussedness of inanimate objects'). 4) The coffee kiosk was already buzzing. An ominous figure looming out of the deep shadows, completely covered in a dark raincoat with hood (Chad). 5) A little later, the whiff of pancakes mingled with the coffee aroma. Ideal 'pannekoek' weather.

Ambient temperature cool, yet not unpleasantly so. Hmmm, I was wondering whether it would be wise to run with the 'kilt' and Tam o' shanter (cap) Scottish outfit, as it would become quite heavy when soaked. Well, as daylight peeped in onto the field, the drizzle subsided (aaaagh no, I was actually looking forward to running in the rain).

The Start just outside the main gate in Queen's Crescent. The initial forward movement to the starting point catching many of us off guard (again!), as one quickly needed to reset the stopwatch back to zero (Eish! This happening even after a club member pre-warned us). Ok, then the actual 'send off' shot. King's Highway sloping upwards. Reminds me of yonder years when one did a 15 kay double lapper in the Winter dry afternoon dusty warm air (had a 16:00 start), when the lungs were battling to breathe during the first lap. Spot Neville Muir (Phobians) marshalling c/o Om die Berg.

Down past Frik Eloff Park (one only spots the dog owner club members on the second lap), then Mimosa Avenue (here King's Highway 'leaves' us, with a sharp left curve), left into Miller's Mile Street, a sweep to the right onto

Derek's Lane (Ian McFayden marshalling (Irene, ex-Phobian?), no red MG MGB GT this time?), a link via Rodericks Road back to King's Highway. Sapper's Contour brings us into the Innovation Hub area, where we circle clockwise and exit Eastwards, through the booms, over the N1 (South/Hotel Street). A brief glimpse of the CSIR A-frame main entrance, then a climb up Meiring Naude Road, a short section on King's Highway back over the N1, left into Sapper's Contour. On the latter corner we were exuberantly encouraged by the Scottish bagpipes (on both laps). Lovely! Thank you.

Leon Ganswyk (Phobians) joins me for few meters, donned in his blinding shiny white shimmering Dawn-2-Dusk jacket. This year I spot no hopping rabbits/bunnies in the little 'park' adjacent to Flinders Lane? Queens's Crescent, then Rodericks Road, circling past Lynnwood Primary school, left into Mimosa, left into Miller's Mile street, which at some stage (believe it or not) becomes Queen's Crescent again, yip, all the way back to Phobians. This being one of the lovely downhill stretches one is rewarded with. The 10 kay participants leave us as we continue back to King's Highway for the second lap.

The sun starts peeping out through the thick cloud blanket as we approach the necessary 1.1 kay loop needed to make up the eventual 21.1 (Dawn and Monica Roads). Back on the field at Phobians, Dawie (and company) greet those of us attired in kilts with a tot of Black Label and a Chamberlain voucher. Thank you. Cold Coke and water sachets available at the Run-A-Way watering tables, adjacent to the fleet of Chamberlain trucks on display. Thank you.

Another well organised event, thank you Phobians. Base camp for the Agapé club (set up the previous day) a welcome sight to unwind after the race. Thank you, Hennie, and Marix.

Training/Health snippets

Why is it important to warm up before exercise?

A warm up is the act of preparing for an athletic event or workout by exercising or practicing for a short time beforehand. Warming up helps reduce your risk of injury and the aches and pains that come with exercise. The physiological reason to warm up is to assist your circulatory system in pumping oxygen-rich blood to your working muscles. The idea is to increase circulation throughout the body in a gradual manner. A proper warm up safely prepares the body for the increased demands of exercise. Cold muscles do not absorb shock or impact as well, and are more susceptible to injury.

A warm-up helps you prepare both mentally and physically for exercise and reduces the chance of injury. During a warm up, any injury or illness you have can often be recognized, and further injury prevented. Other benefits of a proper warm up include:

• Increased movement of blood through your tissues, making the muscles more pliable

• Increased delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. This prevents you from getting out of breath early or too easily

• Prepares your muscles for stretching

• Prepares your heart for an increase in activity, preventing a rapid increase in blood pressure

• Prepares you mentally for the upcoming exercise

• Primes your nerve-to-muscle pathways to be ready for exercise

• Improved coordination and reaction time

A low impact exercise, such as biking or walking or using an elliptical or rowing machine is the best way to warm up.

Your thought for the week

Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears!

Your smile for the week

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was ... Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties.  Mine say five to six.'

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough.'

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?'

TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't your skin fit your face?'

JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.'  Concerned, James asked: 'What happened to the flea?'

The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget:

This particular Sunday sermon....'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust...'  He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year-old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Something to ponder over / something spiritual

Received from Gustav Brink

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.

Here are the winners:

1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.

2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

3. Intaxicaton: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

9. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

10. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.

11. Decafalon (n): The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

12. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

13. Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

14. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and

cannot be cast out.

15. Caterpallor (n.): The colour you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

The Washington Post has also published the winning submissions to its yearly contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words.

And the winners are:

1. Coffee, n. The person upon whom one coughs.

2. Flabbergasted, adj. Appalled by discovering how much weight one has gained.

3. Abdicate, v. To give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
