A futuristic building stands tall overlooking a river. Subtitle reads, "Command Center of the United States Space Exploration Agency".
INT. HALLWAY CORRIDOR
People are walking through a hallway dressed in military looking uniforms and lab coats, carrying clipboards etc. A lady and man are flirting while standing along the side of the wall. A voice crackles over the PA system.
VOICE OVER PA
Captain Stone to report to Admiral Armstrong's office immediately.
INT. HALLWAY INTERSECTION
Three men occupy the intersection engaged in a raucous game of dice. A fourth looks on sourly with his arms folded.
One of these men is crewman ZIPPY HENDERSON. Shorter than the average individual, he is neither attractive nor ugly. He scoops up the dice after his throw and finishes a story from earlier.
ZIPPY
Golly! You should have seen the way he looked at me! I thought he was going to pop a tube. I mean Mad! So I just looked him straight in the eye and said "You keep your hands off my wrench!"
Air Traffic Controller REGGIE MacPHERSON, is a tall and lanky individual with blonde hair and blue eyes.
REGGIE
Wow! You're really swell at takin' care of those upper management types.
Air Traffic Controller DARRYL FITZGIBBONS is the shortest of the men playing dice.
DARRYL
Jeepers, Zippy, I wish I had your backbone.
Commander WILLIAM Kerr is the senior of the group. He is tall, with a muscular build. He shows no sign of any sense of humor.
KERR (GRUNTS)
Ha!
Captain BUZZ STONE approaches the men. Although he is not as tall as Kerr, he is taller than most (in the 50's), and is considered rather attractive by the opposite sex (again, for the 50's). He is slightly built, although one can tell that he has let his physique slip.
ZIPPY
Well, let me tell you this…
Buzz reaches the corner and makes his way around the group. Zippy snaps to attention in mid sentence.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Captain in the hall!
Everyone stands at attention and salutes the Captain as he passes. Buzz, not really acknowledging their presence, salutes casually and continues to walk past the group.
BUZZ
As you were.
INT. admiral's HALLWAY
Buzz reaches a door labeled "ADMIRAL BRET ARMSTRONG". He straightens his shirt and knocks on the door firmly.
ADMIRAL (O.C.)
Come in!
Buzz opens the door and walks through.
INT. ADMIRAL'S OFFICE
Buzz stands in front of the Admiral, who is sitting at his desk scribbling notes on a piece of paper.
The Admiral looks up to see Buzz and smiles. Admiral BRETT ARMSTRONG is a veteran of the military. About 60 years of age, he is a tall, strong man. He stands and greets Buzz.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
Buzz you ole war horse!
BUZZ
You asked to see me Admiral?
ADMIRAL
Yes. I will not waste any time, Buzz. America needs you and your valiant crew for a very important and possibly dangerous mission.
BUZZ
You know that my team is always ready to lend a hand to the U.S. of A, Admiral. United we stand!
ADMIRAL
Yes, Buzz. Your crew is the best there is. That's why I need you and your team to assemble in the briefing room in ten minutes. You are to depart in that rocket ship of yours as soon as you have received your orders.
BUZZ
Understood. I will page the crew immediately!
INT. HALLWAY corridor
Unimportant people are walking through the hall. The same man flirting with a woman before is now flirting with a different woman.
BUZZ (over INTERCOM)
The crew of the Rocket ship USS Patriot…
The unimportant people walking through the corridor stop and listen. Buzz's voice continues.
BUZZ
…are to report to the briefing room on the double.
INT. HALLWAY INTERSECTION
Kerr, Darryl, Zippy and Reggie are in the hallway still playing dice.
ZIPPY
Hurry up and toss! The Captain wants to see us!
DARRYL
Hold your horses Zippy! I gotta good feeling here.
KERR
We cannot keep the Captain waiting. Let's go boys.
DARRYL
Awe sir, just let me...
Darryl tosses the dice. All 4 gentlemen watch in anticipation as the dice rattle against the floor. They all hold their breath as the dice settle. Suddenly, Darryl begins to celebrate by dancing and waving his hands in the air. Zippy looks disappointed.
ZIPPY
Who taught you to play?
DARRYL
You did!
KERR
OK gentlemen. Fun and games are over. Let's go.
The men depart.
INT. JESSICA'S QUARTERS
JESSICA CLAYTON has a slender and muscular physique with brunette hair and hazel eyes. She is in bed, covered in sheets. She appears to be naked underneath. A whisky bottle is on the bedside table. Jessica starts to move about as she wakes and slowly lifts herself up. Her eyes pop open quickly and she turns back to bed.
There is a man in bed next to her. Jessica puts her head in her hands. After a pause, she leans forward and reaches for the man's dog tags.
JESSICA
And you are?
The man mumbles lightly and rolls towards Jessica. He lies on his back and falls back asleep. Jessica grabs the man's dog tags and reads them.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
Ugh! An enlisted man?
INT. COMMAND CENTER BRIEFING ROOM
The room is small with chairs set up in an auditorium style with a podium at the front.
The Admiral, Buzz, Kerr, and two ladies are milling about in the room. One of the ladies is Professor SARAH BROWN, who has the same physical appearance as Jessica, but blonde. The other lady is Etum Ydal. Etum is short with straight black hair. She is a visible, but undeterminable, minority. The Admiral, Buzz, Kerr and Etum start to gather at the head of the room next to the podium. Sarah looks anxious and does not move toward the front of the room. Her concentration is broken as people begin to walk in.
Jessica, Zippy, Darryl, and Reggie walk in the room in single file. They all begin to take their seats.
Jessica's hair is disheveled and her mascara is slightly smudged. She sits down at the back of the room in a chair in the corner. Sarah looks at Jessica with a raised eyebrow.
JESSICA
What're you looking at?
Sarah averts her eyes and walks to the front of the room to where the Admiral, Buzz, Kerr and Etum are standing.
Buzz steps forward to address the group.
BUZZ
Greetings, everyone. The Admiral is going to brief us on a mission of great importance. Admiral…
Buzz steps back and extends a hand towards the podium, inviting the Admiral to speak. The Admiral nods, places both hands on the podium and speaks sternly.
ADMIRAL
Thank-you Captain. As you all may have heard, the asbestos industry is in dire straits. That means that the security of the United States and the health of every man, woman and child is at risk.
The Admiral pauses and looks around room. The crew look at each other.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
It is absolutely imperative that we find a source of asbestos elsewhere, if we are to continue to use this substance to insulate our homes against nuclear bombardment. Not to forget the dietary benefits! It is this reason that I call upon the crew of the USS Patriot to secure this alternate source of our most important protection.
He turns and motions towards Sarah.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
This is Dr. Sarah Brown. She is the top geologist at the University of America.
Sarah steps forward with false confidence.
SARAH
Thank-you, Admiral. It has come to our attention that there is a source of asbestos that we may be able to use. Probes have revealed that there are potential deposits on Venus.
The crew begin looking at each other and mumble concerns or excitement. Sarah waits for the talking to finish.
SARAH (CONT'D)
It is our intent to land on the surface of Venus and see for ourselves just what is there and what can be used.
Sarah motions to Etum.
SARAH (CONT'D)
This is my assistant, Intern Etum Ydal from the University of America. She's my assistant. Etum is currently working on her double major in Communications and Chemistry. This makes her the perfect candidate to assist us in locating the asbestos and also acting as our Communications Officer for the mission.
Sarah steps back. The Admiral nods to her.
ADMIRAL
Thank you Professor Brown. Etum is a foreign exchange student at the University, so remember, the whole world is watching! Darryl and Reggie will be working Space Traffic Control for this mission.
The Admiral pauses and leans on the podium. He looks very serious.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
I envy your mission. You have a chance to secure the American way of life. And let us not forget the rest of the world! If your mission is successful, we will be able to continue bringing capitalism, fast food, asbestos and 9 to 5 work days to other countries. We did not ask for this task, but the world needs us. We need to guide others in their decisions.
The Admiral snaps back at attention and salutes. The people jump from their chairs, stand at attention and salute. Jessica is not really saluting, but rather shielding her eyes from the fluorescent lights.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
Go forth my fellow patriots! United we stand!
GROUP
United we stand!
BUZZ
OK, everyone. Suit up and be on board at Oh-Nine-Hundred. Zippy! Take Darryl and Reggie and perform our pre-flight checks. Everyone has their orders. Dismissed!
Everyone gets up and starts to file out of the room. As Buzz gets ready to leave the Admiral calls him.
ADMIRAL
Buzz!
Buzz turns to face the Admiral and brings himself to attention.
BUZZ
Yes, Admiral?
The Admiral approaches Buzz with great concern in his eyes.
ADMIRAL
The well-being of all red-blooded Americans is in your hands now, Captain.
BUZZ
You can count on us, Admiral. You said yourself: my crew is the best there is.
The Admiral smiles and motions to shake Buzz's hand.
ADMIRAL
The women and children of America thank you.
Buzz shakes the Admiral's hand and smiles.
BUZZ
When I get back, you can thank me with a big slice of your wife's apple pie!
They laugh. The Admiral pats Buzz on the back.
INT. ZIPPY'S QUARTERS
Zippy is packing his suitcase for his mission while Reggie and Darryl look on with concern in their eyes.
REGGIE
Gee, Zippy. I don't know why you are so calm. I would be very worried. How do you stay so calm when you are about to go on a dangerous mission?
Zippy momentarily pauses from packing.
ZIPPY
Dangerous mission? We're going to Venus. You silly-billy...don't you remember your Greek Geometry? Venus is the goddess of beauty!
Zippy returns to packing his gear.
REGGIE
Wow, you are brave.
DARRYL
Brave? More like harebrained if you think this will be an easy mission. I have heard the weather on Venus is horrible! Even though we think the air is breathable, there could be raging tornadoes, dust clouds that span for miles and even an ozone layer without holes! It's hot too!
ZIPPY
A little lousy weather doesn't frighten me. I could do with a tan anyway!
Zippy chuckles to himself as he continues to pack.
DARRYL
Well, if the weather doesn't frighten you, what if there is a race of monsters that lives there?
Zippy stops packing and turns his head slightly.
ZIPPY
What race of monsters?
DARRYL
You haven't heard the rumors?
Zippy, clearly nervous now, stands upright and turns to face Darryl.
ZIPPY
Who told you that there are monsters up there?
DARRYL
I can't remember. I heard rumors through the grapevine.
ZIPPY
Well, gee-wilikers, why didn't they tell us that during our briefing?
DARRYL
I don't know.
ZIPPY
You seem to know a lot about space exploration for guys that never leave their office!
Darryl and Reggie look offended.
ZIPPY
You goose, if there was something like that they would have told us. Uncle Sam would never send us into danger without telling us all the facts.
Zippy turns and continues packing.
DARRYL
You're right.
Darryl approaches Zippy.
DARRYL
All I am saying is - be careful. You're a super friend and I want to see you again.
Zippy stands, turns to Darryl and points a thumb at his chest.
ZIPPY
Remember who you are talking to! Like a cherry on your favorite sundae, I always come out on top!
Zippy turns his back to Reggie and Darryl and starts packing again.
DARRYL
Well, just in case, I want you to take these.
Darryl reaches into his pocket.
ZIPPY
Look, I don't know what you want me to bring, but I don't have a lot of room in this suitcase.
DARRYL
No, look.
With one hand Darryl grabs one of Zippy's hands. He pulls his other hand out of his pocket and drops a pair of playing dice into Zippy's palm.
Zippy's eyes bulge as he looks at the die.
ZIPPY
Gad-zooks! Your lucky dice? I can't take these!
Darryl closes Zippy's hand around the dice.
DARRYL
Please. They'll bring you good luck.
Zippy takes the dice and puts them in his chest pocket.
ZIPPY
I will always carry them. On that you can bet your favorite shiny dime.
INT. GUEST ACCOMMODATIONS
Sarah is taking a steamy shower. The bathroom door is open and Etum is asleep in the room next door.
SARAH
You know Etum, I am very excited about this trip. Can you imagine, you and I working with the crew of the famous USS Patriot?
Etum is still asleep.
SARAH (O.C.)
Do you know how many successful missions they have been on? I mean wow! Did you know that after one more mission they break the record for the most missions completed?
She waits for a response, but doesn't get any. Her eyes become dreamy.
SARAH (CONT'D)
And that Captain! He's such a real man! Not like the space scum you hear stories about!
Still asleep, Etum rolls over.
SARAH (O.C.)
I haven't told anyone this before Etum, but I have been a fan of the Captain for a while now. Ever since he traveled to the moon and liberated our colonists from those horrible moon people, I can't seem to shake his handsome face from my brain! Don't you think he's gorgeous Etum?
Sarah tilts her head back into the water and runs her hands through her hair.
SARAH (AFTER WAITING FOR A REPLY) (CONT'D)
You don't have to say anything. I know by your silence you think he's a cutie too!
Etum turns her head slightly and snores quietly.
INT. HALLWAY CORRIDOR
The hallway is a hive of activity. Various people are walking up and down the hallway. Jessica approaches Buzz and invades his personal space.
JESSICA
Well, Captain. It looks like you and I are going to be stuck in close quarters again.
Buzz takes a slight step backwards. Jessica bats her eyes and steps forward into Buzz.
BUZZ
Just for the journey to Venus, Doctor.
Buzz takes a larger step backwards.
JESSICA
But we'll have to find some way to pass the time 'til we get there.
Jessica takes a step forward. She puts an arm above his shoulder and rests it against the wall.
BUZZ
There is always work to be done, Doctor.
Buzz steps back and bumps into the wall. Frustrated, Buzz walks away. Jessica is disappointed and places her hand on her hip.
INT. enlisted personnel HALLWAY
Buzz walks into the hallway and passes Darryl and Reggie as they step out of Zippy's room. Darryl and Reggie stand to attention and salute. Buzz returns the salute as he walks by.
Reggie and Darryl relax their stance and begin walking down the hallway.
REGGIE
Do you really think the Captain's up for this mission?
DARRYL
Aw, he's alright. I think that this trip would do him more good than not.
REGGIE
Well, losing a wife is difficult. You sure he's ready?
DARRYL
I think his job is exactly what he needs.
INT. SECURITY ROOM
MEDIUM SHOT, PROFILE: Kerr and Zippy are standing next to each other.
ZIPPY
Are you serious? This is silly willy.
KERR
These are new safety protocols. We must abide by them.
Zippy rolls his eyes and is clearly agitated.
ZIPPY
But we have flown thousands of missions before! What gives?
KERR (STERNLY)
Look, I am the Security Officer for the USS Patriot and you don't see me arguing do you? I have to do this too! Just follow along and do as you're told. Our government is taking this very seriously.
Zippy snaps to attention.
ZIPPY
Yes sir!
Kerr is not amused.
DOLLY KNEE SHOT: Zippy is dressed in flight gear and has a suitcase with him on the floor. He salutes Kerr and bends down to pick up his suitcase.
TRACKING SHOT TO THE RIGHT: Zippy puts his luggage through an x-ray machine.
KERR
Have you packed your own bags?
EXT. USS PATRIOT – EARTH LAUNCH PAD
The USS Patriot, on a launching pad, is a cigar shaped spaceship with three fins that curve down to the ground.
Various land-crew are preparing the ship. One individual is attaching a gas hose to a fuel intake valve. A large man is violently throwing luggage into a cargo hold (one of which is Zippy's luggage). Another man climbs to the top of the USS Patriot and attaches an American flag to the nose of the ship.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The Common Room is grey all around, with various work stations, dials, screens and chairs. On the right hand side in the back corner, there is a ladder that goes up to the cockpit. Next to the ladder is a porthole. There is a desk in the middle of the room, with three chairs behind it. In the back left corner is a station with several complicated dials and buttons, with a chair in front of them.
Zippy and Reggie are flipping switches while Darryl is checking on the door and the entrance ramp of the ship.
ZIPPY
Hey, Reggie, can you help me with the new cooling mechanism? This is still such a new feature I'm not quite sure how it all works.
REGGIE
Absolutely, buddy-o-mine. Start the initiation sequence. The Patriot will start pulling in moisture from the atmosphere. This prevents you from having to carry your own stores of water!
Zippy walks to his console and starts turning some dials.
ZIPPY
This technology is superrific! I'm initiating the moisture extraction process. We should be pulling in moisture by the gallon soon!
Reggie walks to Zippy's console and starts to watch a screen over Zippy's shoulder.
REGGIE
Wow! Those coolant tanks sure fill up fast don't they? Slow it down Zippy! You don't want to blow them!
Zippy quickly turns a dial to slow the process.
REGGIE (CONT'D)
Once they are three quarters full we can force the coolant tanks to release some of the water they have collected.
ZIPPY
They can get rid of their water?
REGGIE
Absolutely! That is how they work! They release water which drips down all the engine parts and cools them! The only problem is the water comes out the back-end of the ship!
ZIPPY
Really?
REGGIE
It won't matter much when you are in space. But hey, when I was testing it, I found out something that is really hip. Turn on the thrusters and release the water. Watch what happens to poor Darryl over there standing by the open door!
Zippy looks at Darryl. Darryl is examining the door latch to ensure that it is stable and ready for lift off. Zippy returns his attention to his console, glances at Reggie (who nods quickly to encourage him), and hits some buttons on the console. Darryl looks around as he hears the ship beginning to hum.
REGGIE
Now that the thrusters are going, release the water, and watch what happens!
Zippy flips a switch on his console. Steam billows into the ship, engulfing Darryl at the door. Zippy and Reggie laugh as Darryl is covered in steam. Darryl frantically closes the door and cuts off the steam. As it clears, Darryl walks over to Zippy and Reggie who are still laughing.
DARRYL
What are you doing? Are you guys nuts? Are you trying to kill us all?
Zippy and Reggie are clutching their stomachs and are still laughing. Zippy tries to talk in between bursts of laughter.
ZIPPY
Awe, common Darryl! That was funny!
REGGIE
You should'a seen your face when the steam hit you!
Zippy and Reggie are still laughing. Reggie pats Zippy on the back as he laughs. Darryl, begins to chuckle slowly.
DARRYL
Yup! You guys really got me!
Darryl joins in with the laughter.
DARRYL
Can you imagine if I was seriously hurt?
They all laugh even harder.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The table in the Common Room is acting as a makeshift bar and is covered in martini glasses, liquor bottles and a cocktail shaker.
Zippy and Jessica are standing facing each other with martini glasses in hand, while chatting to each other. Sarah and Etum walk in. Zippy and Jessica stop talking, turn their heads to Sarah and Etum and toast them.
ZIPPY
Hey you crazy kids!
SARAH
What's this? You're drinking?
Jessica lowers her glass and rolls her eyes. Zippy puts on a big smile.
ZIPPY
Sure Professor! How do you think the crew of the USS Patriot remains so calm under pressure?
Sarah puts her hands on her waist and smirks.
SARAH
I always thought it was nerves of steel.
JESSICA
The Captain and the Commander are upstairs preparing the ship for take-off. Us "grunts" have a few minutes to relax! Would you like a belt before lift off?
ZIPPY
It's recommended by the FDA as an excellent muscle relaxant! It's been proven in scientific studies to be effective at calming crew members during lift off!
Sarah looks at Jessica. Jessica smiles and raises her glass again.
JESSICA
It's true! It gets rid of the "take-off" jitters! And a lot of other jitters too!
SARAH
I'll bet!
Zippy hands Sarah and Etum a drink. Everyone gathers around. Jessica extends her arm with a drink in her hand to make a toast.
JESSICA
To the USS Patriot! May she remain unscathed in this valiant mission!
ZIPPY
Yeah! And without a scratch too!
INT. uss patriot COCKPIT
Buzz and Kerr strap themselves in and play with dials. Kerr presses and holds a button as he leans inward to the intercom.
KERR
Crew, ready yourselves for take-off.
Buzz hits a button and a warning alarm begins.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The crew sips their drinks. Lights flash and the alarm is heard. Sarah and Etum jump, while Jessica and Zippy barely seem to notice.
ZIPPY
Well, fun's over! Time to get to work!
JESSICA
Oh no Zippy, the fun is just beginning!
Everyone takes one last swig of their drinks. Zippy collects the glasses as the ladies walk to their stations. They strap themselves in.
After Zippy cleans up, he mans his post in the back left corner of the Common Room.
EXT. uss PATRIOT – LAUNCH PAD
The boosters of the USS Patriot begin to fire and smoke billows out from under the ship. The ship begins to shake slightly as the thrusters become more and more intense.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Kerr and Buzz play with dials as the cockpit begins to shake. Buzz pushes a button and leans into his intercom.
BUZZ
Space traffic control? Reggie? Darryl? How are we doing?
Buzz releases the button and waits.
REGGIE (ON INTERCOM)
Everything is A-OK. You have clearance. Your trajectory will take you right past the moon and you'll be on your way to Venus!
INT. traffic control room
Darryl and Reggie bend intently over their control panels while the Admiral is looking over their shoulders. There are unimportant people behind them working with dials and flipping switches. Buzz is mumbling over the intercom.
BUZZ
The moon…
There is a brief pause.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Roger. Prepare for lift-off.
DARRYL
Commencing countdown: 10...9...8...7...
The unimportant people start moving dials quicker. The Admiral places his hand on Reggie's shoulder.
DARRYL (CONT'D)
6...5...4...
EXT. usS PATRIOT – LAUNCH PAD
Flames burst out of the rocket boosters. Smoke envelops the ship.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
KERR
All systems go, Captain.
DARRYL (OVER INTERCOM)
3...2...1...0...
REGGIE (OVER INTERCOM)
She's all yours, Captain. Good luck.
Buzz presses a button and leans into his intercom.
BUZZ
Thanks Reggie. Hold the fort.
KERR
We have lift off!
EXT. usS PATRIOT – LAUNCH PAD
The ship slowly begins to rise from the ground as the flames glow hotter and hotter. The ship picks up speed as it ascends.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The room is shaking violently and the crew struggle to stay in their seats. Sarah and Etum look a little nervous, while Zippy and Jessica appear more at ease with the liftoff.
ZIPPY
Hang on to your unmentionables, ladies.
EXT. EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE
The ship is now at high velocity as it continues its lift off. The ship passes through clouds and into the blue yonder. The rocket leaves the atmosphere.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Sarah looks very nervous while Etum is finally starting to relax. The warning alarm continues to sound.
ZIPPY
Hey Professor, is this your first flight to space?
Sarah looks very frightened and nods quickly.
JESSICA
Don't worry, the booze will kick in soon!
ZIPPY
Professor, think of it like a massage chair.
EXT. earth's orbit
The USS Patriot is flying through space and approaches the moon.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz looks out the cockpit window.
BUZZ
I hate that damn planet!
EXT. MOON SURFACE
The Moon surface is rocky and barren. There is a group of men dressed in loin cloths holding caveman-like spears watching the USS Patriot in the sky passing overhead. While grunting an chanting, the group starts throwing their spears at the ship which naturally fall short.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz raises a clenched fist and shakes it at the window.
BUZZ
Vermin!
EXT. MOON SURFACE
Some of the moon natives shake their fists at the USS Patriot. One of the Moon natives turns around, bends over, lifts the back of his loin cloth and begins to slap one of his butt cheeks.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz turns his gaze back to his console and plays with a few dials.
BUZZ
She's all yours Bill.
KERR
Affirmative.
Buzz gets out of his chair and walks out of the cockpit.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The crew unstrap themselves as the warning alarm stops. They all stand and congregate in the middle of the room.
SARAH
This is very exciting. Don't you find this exciting?
ZIPPY
Zoinks! It's all in a day's work for us!
JESSICA
Zippy! When have you ever done a day's work?
ZIPPY
Doc! I'll tell ya! That day I drove you home from the Officer's Ball was one.
JESSICA
Oh, Zippy, you're such a kidder!
Jessica glares at Zippy. Buzz comes down the ladder and meanders into the room. Sarah approaches Buzz with lustful eyes.
SARAH
So, Captain. It looks like we're going to be in close quarters for a while.
BUZZ
Just until we get to Venus, Dr. Brown.
SARAH
Sarah, please. We will have to find some way to pass the time.
Sarah bats her eyes.
BUZZ
I'm a married man, Sarah.
SARAH
Yeah, I noticed you were still wearing your wedding band. But I thought...
BUZZ
I'm married to the United States of America, Dr. Brown. That's where my devotion lies.
SARAH
I see.
Jessica has been watching the entire exchange and does not look impressed. Zippy reaches into his chest pocket and pulls out the die.
ZIPPY
What do ya say, we play some dice?
They all look at Zippy.
BUZZ
Zippy, what am I going to do with you?
Buzz exits the Common Room while Kerr descends the ladder. Jessica walks over to Sarah briskly.
JESSICA
You just stay away from my Captain. He doesn't go for broads like you.
SARAH
Oh yeah? He doesn't seem to go for dames who show up looking like they've been up all night.
They glare at each other. Sarah turns away from Jessica and walks past Zippy and Kerr playing dice.
Zippy is crouched down while Kerr is leaning forward with his hands on his knees. Zippy tosses. Kerr and Zippy watch the dice as they rattle against the steel floor. The dice settle and Zippy smiles.
ZIPPY
Ha! I knew they would work for me too!
Zippy picks up the dice, sits down and leans back in his chair with a look of satisfaction.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Now you have to tell me what happened to the Captain on his last mission.
KERR
Well, I suppose a deal is a deal.
Kerr takes a deep breath.
KERR (CONT'D)
As I am sure you already know, the Captain and his wife used to be crew mates. In fact, we were all together on that mission to Mars. Our vessel was attacked by a giant Amoeba. Let's just say that his wife never made it back to earth. The Captain blames himself.
ZIPPY
But, was it his fault?
KERR
No, no, it wasn't his fault. But you have to realize Zippy, a Captain is always responsible for his crew. If something were to happen to any of us, the Captain would blame himself.
ZIPPY
And gee, imagine how hard it must have been because it was his wife!
KERR
Exactly, Zippy.
INT. uss patriot CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS
The interior of the Captain's Quarters is fairly stark with a cot, a desk and a large chair. There are medals, citations and anti-communist propaganda posters on the wall.
While sitting in his chair, he pulls out a framed picture from a desk drawer.
The picture shows 5 people who are standing all together in front of the USS Patriot posing for the camera. Some of the people have their arms around each others' shoulders, while others are waving. They are all dressed in uniforms similar to the one Buzz is currently wearing. Buzz focuses on a woman standing next to Kerr.
Buzz's eyes begin to well. He shakes his head and takes a deep breath. He places the framed picture on the desk in front of him so that it is propped up and facing him. After a momentary pause, he leans backwards. He closes his eyes tightly.
EXT. SPACE
The USS Patriot is flying through space. An overlaid calendar appears. Months or days rip off and fly away indicating the passage of time.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy and Jessica are at their stations pushing buttons and turning dials. Etum and Sarah are shuffling through their duffle bags and pull out flat metal objects. Sarah pulls out a back-pack and straps it on.
ZIPPY
Hey Professor, what you got there?
Jessica and Zippy get out of their chairs and walk towards Sarah and Etum.
SARAH
This is the A.L.S. 3000! It's the latest in asbestos location equipment. I can't believe I am holding this! When the military asked me what type of equipment I would need, I said that I wanted this equipment, expecting them to turn me down. I never thought they would give them to me. The University doesn't have enough money to buy this type of equipment! I was shocked when the military gave me three of these to work with!
ZIPPY
Jeepers! How does it work?
Sarah walks over and shows one of the flat object to Zippy. It has a screen on it, with some flashing lights and buttons.
SARAH
Well, you just point the device in front of you, and it sends out infrared signals. It finds hidden things - notably, deposits of asbestos. It then downloads all the information to this back-pack.
ZIPPY
Wow! What's in the back-pack?
SARAH
It's a mini-computer which runs off the energy of a potato! It stores all the data that the scanners collect.
ZIPPY
The potato stores data?
SARAH
No you silly! The back-pack stores the data! Would you like to see what we look like in infrared?
ZIPPY
Boy, would I!
Sarah hands the scanner to Zippy and takes off the back-pack. She helps Zippy put the back-pack on as he holds the scanner. Zippy starts looking around the room through the scanner.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Wow-ee!!! This is cooler than ice down my pants!
Zippy starts walking around the room. He points the device at all the objects in the Common Room. He walks towards one of the walls of the ship.
ZIPPY
I can see the asbestos we have in the hull of the ship! And look!
Zippy turns and points the scanner at Jessica.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
I can see through Doc's clothes!
Jessica immediately poses for a better shot (one hand on hip and the other behind her head).
Kerr crosses his arms.
KERR
You can?
Zippy slowly turns to Kerr.
KERR (CONT'D)
Zippy, you are looking in the wrong direction.
SARAH
Zippy, stop kidding around! You know that's not how it works!
Buzz walks down the ladder and into the Common Room.
ZIPPY
(chuckling)
I know.
Zippy continues to walk around the ship pointing the A.L.S. 3000 at various pieces of equipment. Sarah walks over to Buzz.
SARAH
That Zippy, he's always playing. I never know if he's serious.
BUZZ
Yes, he's quite a joker. But he's a darn fine engineer. And besides, we could all use a little levity every once in a while.
Jessica approaches Kerr and strikes a pose.
JESSICA
Some more than others.
KERR
I have a fine sense of humor, Doctor.
JESSICA
Yeah, you're a real barrel of monkeys, Bill.
The ship jolts as a slight "bang" echoes throughout the room. The crew is stunned into silence.
SARAH
What was that?
BUZZ
I think we've been hit by something.
ZIPPY
We sure have Captain! We've been hit by something! I can see the point of impact in the asbestos. Come here! Look!
The crew gathers around Zippy.
The scanner displays an infrared image of the hull of the ship with a hole in it. Sarah gasps.
KERR
Our wing has been breached.
Kerr runs and climbs the ladder while the rest continue to stare over Zippy's shoulder.
SARAH
Is it serious?
JESSICA
Is it serious? Are you kidding me? We're in a tin can in the middle of space. The only thing keeping us alive is the hull of the ship!
ZIPPY
It appears that it's only the wing. Our immediate environment is safe, but landing on Earth may be difficult.
SARAH
What about landing on Venus?
ZIPPY
Venus's atmosphere is not quite as dense as Earth's. Landing on Venus isn't the problem. It'll be a different story when we try to land on Earth.
JESSICA
The Earth's atmosphere is too dense and the wing will probably disintegrate upon re-entry.
ZIPPY
We can fix the wing with any asbestos we find on Venus. I just hope there's enough there to be found. I'm glad you brought that fancy new equipment Professor.
Buzz starts to walk towards the ladder.
BUZZ
Although it's important to fulfill our mission, our very lives may depend on your equipment locating the asbestos we need to fix the ship.
Buzz ascends the ladder to the cockpit. The crew looks concerned. Zippy plays with the dice in his hands.
INT. uss patriot CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS
Buzz is sitting in his chair reading a piece of paper. He looks deep in thought. Kerr's voice crackles over the intercom.
KERR
Captain. We are approaching Venus. I think I have found a place to land.
Buzz hits a button on the intercom and leans towards the speaker.
BUZZ
Good. I will be there in a minute.
Buzz leans back in his chair and goes into deep thought. He lifts his eyebrows suddenly and presses a button on his desk.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Zippy, how are the repairs to the damaged wing coming?
Zippy's voice comes over the intercom.
ZIPPY (o.C.)
We're good for now. I have done all I can without asbestos. We should be okay to land on Venus.
Buzz presses the button again.
BUZZ
Good! Get to your station and prepare for landing!
ZIPPY (O.C.)
Aye, aye Captain.
Buzz stands and walks out the door.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz enters the cockpit. Kerr is sitting at his station, looking into a screen. He does not look up when he addresses Buzz.
KERR
It seems that although the surface is warm, it is not above equatorial temperatures. There are no storms for hundreds of miles.
BUZZ
That's good news. Prepare to take us down.
KERR
Roger.
Kerr begins playing with some dials as Buzz straps himself into his own station. He begins to hum "America the Beautiful".
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy, Jessica, Sarah and Etum are at their stations. They are all busy doing their own independent things. Buzz's voice beams over the intercom.
BUZZ
OK, everyone. We're going in.
The crew look at each other. Sarah and Etum look anxious and strap themselves in quickly while Jessica takes her time.
ZIPPY
Preparing for landing.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz and Kerr are playing with dials on the control panel in front of them. Buzz is in the final verses of "America the Beautiful". The ship begins to shake slightly. Buzz continues his humming.
BUZZ
Easy on the thrusters, Bill. Don't forget we have a hole in our wing. We should be alright, but we still need to be careful.
Buzz picks up his humming where he left off. Clearly exasperated, Kerr looks out of the corner of his eye as he addresses the Captain.
KERR
Sir, I have not forgotten that we have a hole in our wing. I am compensating a little. It may make our landing a little rough though.
BUZZ
Better rough and successful than a smooth death. Sing with me Bill!
Once again Kerr peers at the Captain out of the corner of his eyes. Buzz begins to sing.
BUZZ
America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood a..
EXT. VENUS' ATMOSPHERE
The USS Patriot descends into the atmosphere. Flames burst over the nose of the ship as two baritone voices sing.
BuZZ
From sea to shinning sea!
Kerr
From sea to shinning sea!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Kerr seems to be struggling with the controls with a look of concern on his face. Buzz is relaxed with a smile.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Sarah, Jessica, Etum and Zippy are at their stations. Sarah is very frightened and holding onto her chair with white knuckles. Zippy is playing with his dice in his hands.
SARAH
How long does this go on?
No one answers. The room shakes harder. Sarah whines.
EXT. VENUS LANDING ZONE
The USS Patriot descends towards the ground fins pointed downwards. Smoke billows from the thrusters as dust from the planet is scattered. The ship lands and the engines grow quiet.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz and Kerr look at each other.
BUZZ
That'a boy Bill. That was perfect!
KERR
Thank you, Sir. It was much tougher than I thought it would be.
BUZZ
Well, you really belted out that last note!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Sarah has her head in her hands while the others look relaxed. Buzz comes over the intercom.
BUZZ
OK, everyone. We're here. Prepare to disembark!
Sarah raises her face from her hands and looks around. She breathes a heavy sigh of relief. The rest of the crew begin to unstrap.
SARAH
We made it! I can't believe we made it!
ZIPPY
Yeppers! We sure did! Let's get ourselves ready to explore!
JESSICA
Right. Zippy and I will get the regular expedition equipment ready. Professor, you and Etum get the A.L.S. 3000 units ready for us to scan the environment.
The crew breaks up. Jessica and Zippy approach a cabinet against one of the walls.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
Zippy, you get the suits we need. I'll get my medical gear.
They open the cabinet and begin pulling out equipment. Zippy opens another door and reaches for a gun in the gun rack inside the cabinet.
ZIPPY
Are we taking our side-arms on this Doc?
JESSICA
No. I don't think we'll need them.
Zippy looks at her in shock.
ZIPPY
No weapons Doc? Are you sure?
JESSICA
We should be fine. Kerr will have his fancy new gun with him, I'm sure. Plus, it's not like the Captain would split us up on a new planet in a potentially hostile environment.
ZIPPY
You're right!
Zippy closes the cabinet door and opens another. He starts to unload more equipment. Buzz and Kerr climb down the ladder.
BUZZ
Are we ready team?
ZIPPY
Yes sir!
KERR
The temperature will be a little warm, so make sure you have your cooler exploration suits on. Bring all the equipment you need.
BUZZ
We've landed in an area where conditions are good for asbestos. Our scans also indicate that there is life on this planet. So be sharp.
ZIPPY
Oh no! I forgot to pack my toothbrush!
BUZZ
Oh Zippy! You're such a kidder!
The crew gather round Jessica, Zippy and the piles of equipment. They each grab some suits and begin to put them on.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
The crew emerge from the craft wearing their suits and carrying additional equipment. The suits look like mechanic's overalls. Each one is grey with no protective head gear. There is an insignia on the left breast. Sarah tugs on Etum's sleeve and points to the horizon. They all begin to walk down the ramp in single file. When they reach the planet surface, they place all their extra equipment on the ground.
Venus is bright, sunny and very rocky. Zippy kneels down and starts playing with some of the equipment that has been dropped. Kerr walks around with his laser rifle pointed out in front of him. He looks concerned. Buzz walks out and surveys the surrounding area with his hands on his hips. Sarah and Etum look around wide-eyed. Jessica pulls some sunglasses from one of her pockets and walks over to Buzz.
BUZZ
How are we looking people?
ZIPPY
I look great. Bill could do with a haircut, though.
BUZZ
Zippy! Instead of making wise cracks, give Dr. Brown a hand with her equipment.
ZIPPY
Sure thing, Captain.
Zippy, Sarah and Etum start grabbing some equipment from the pile. Jessica folds her arms and follows Buzz as he walks over to Kerr.
BUZZ
What do you think, Bill?
KERR
I think we should be very careful, sir.
BUZZ
I agree.
Sarah and Etum walk over carrying the A.L.S. 3000s with them. Zippy follows close behind them.
SARAH
Captain, we are ready to scan the area.
BUZZ
Swell! OK, everyone. To cover more ground, we will split into teams. Zippy, you go with Intern Etum. I want you to head that way.
Buzz points to his right. As Zippy and Etum start to gather Buzz lifts his hands and motions for Zippy to approach him. When Zippy approaches, Buzz leans towards Zippy and speaks under his breath.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Remember, she is an exchange student; from Canada I think. Speak slowly and loudly so that she understands you.
Zippy faintly nods and walks over to Etum. Buzz turns to address the rest of the crew.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Doc, take the extra A.L.S. 3000 and go with Bill. Also Doc, see if you can find any medical data. You want that Nobel Prize, don't you?
JESSICA
Sure I do, Captain. But what am I going to find on this rock?
BUZZ
You never know, Doc. You never know. Why don't you two head that way.
Buzz points to his left. Jessica and Kerr gather together. Buzz turns to Sarah.
BUZZ
Professor, you come with me. We'll go…that way.
Buzz points vaguely in another direction.
BUZZ (CON'T)
We've all got our assignments. We will meet back here in an hour.
Sarah walks over to Buzz and gives Jessica a "nyah, nyah" look. Jessica hisses.
ZIPPY
Zoinks! I wish I brought my bathing suit! Then I could get a tan! Whacha's say Doc? How's about a beach party?
JESSICA
Oh, Zippy. You're such a kidder!
BUZZ
OK, people! Let's make America proud!
The crew leaves to their assigned directions. Anyone who is not carrying something, grabs a bag, or equipment from the pile at the end of the ramp.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #1
Zippy and Etum walk over the Venusian landscape. Etum is scanning with her A.L.S. 3000.
ZIPPY
Holy Hannah! Your gear sure looks heavy! You geologists must do your exercises! That must be one large potato!
Zippy stops and strokes his chin.
BUZZ (VOICE OVER - REVERB)
Remember to speak slowly and loudly.
ZIPPY
I said, you-ge-ol-o-gists-must--do your-exercises! I remember the last time I did sit ups, I pulled a…well, it don't matter.
Etum rolls her eyes and disappears behind a large pile of rocks as Zippy continues talking.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Foreign exchange, huh? You're-from-Canada? Eh?
Zippy bends down and picks up a rock. He studies it while he continues to talk.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Bet it's a little too warm for your igloos here, "eh"? I bet you normally have your dogsleds pulling your equipment, don't you?
Zippy stops and starts looking around.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Hey? Where'd ya go?
Zippy spins around as a scream comes from behind a pile of rocks. Zippy drops the gear and runs.
EXT. VENUS ETUM'S DEATH BED
Zippy stops running and looks at the ground in shock.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Gad Zooks!
The other teams come running and stand next to Zippy. They all look at the ground in horror. Sarah's mouth drops open and she suddenly covers her mouth.
JESSICA
Oh my god!
SARAH
Oh no.
Sarah buries her face in Buzz's chest.
An A.L.S. 3000 with a light flashing is lying next to a pile of bones. A faint beep is coming from the unit. Jessica bends down and examines the clothing. She looks at the pile of bones.
JESSICA
This is Etum's uniform. She's dead!
BUZZ
What happened?
Zippy puts his hands up and shrugs his shoulders.
ZIPPY
I don't know! I took my eyes off her for just a second!
Buzz addresses the rest of the crew.
BUZZ
Be careful, everyone. There are secrets on this planet. And dangers too! Tread lightly. Zippy, go back to the ship and set up a security perimeter. Set it to "ultra sensitivity". I want to know if anything comes near our ship.
ZIPPY
Aye aye Captain!
Zippy salutes and runs away. Sarah pulls herself away from the Captain's arm and looks down once more. She buries her face again. Jessica and Kerr turn and leave.
BUZZ (CON'T)
Now, let's continue our exploration. The sooner we are done, the sooner we get back to our families, and our great country.
Sarah finally pulls herself away from Buzz's arm. She walks away looking at the ground in front of her. Buzz follows her. Sarah lifts her head suddenly, stops and turns and looks at the bones while Buzz passes her.
SARAH
I hope this doesn't affect my grant!
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #2
Kerr and Jessica are walking over rocky terrain. Jessica is pointing her A.L.S. 3000 back and forth while Kerr points his gun at everything.
JESSICA
So tell me what happened to the Captain on your last mission.
KERR
Well, he's a very serious man. He takes his missions seriously. The last mission we were on was a peace treaty negotiation on Mars. He handled it like a pro. But, he can be a bit of a romantic sometimes. And that's what got him into trouble.
JESSICA
What do you mean?
KERR
The Captain decided to go for a walk along the lake with his wife. They were attacked by a gigantic amoeba and it killed her.
JESSICA
Gee, that's some real hard knocks.
KERR
It hit him rather hard.
They continue to walk a few paces. Kerr stops, bends down and examines the ground. Jessica stares at Kerr's butt and raises an eyebrow.
JESSICA
Hey there Commander, anytime you want a physical you let me know.
KERR
I think I found something. Look at this.
Jessica walks over and points the A.L.S. 3000 at the ground.
KERR
Do those look like footprints to you?
JESSICA
They do indeed. And for another interesting twist, there seems to be traces of asbestos in them!
Jessica starts to look around wearily. Kerr crouches and examines the ground.
KERR
These certainly aren't human footprints.
JESSICA
I gotta admit, I am a little frightened.
KERR
Don't be. These tracks aren't fresh. Are you sure about the asbestos?
(not waiting for an answer)
They seem to be going over that way. Let's follow them!
Kerr gets up and walks at a quick pace. Jessica runs to catch-up.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Zippy whistles while carrying a large rod which looks like a matchstick down the ramp of the ship.
ZIPPY
Good thing I am always prepared! I am so glad that mom sent me to boy scouts.
Zippy steps onto the surface of Venus. He walks a few paces, and sticks the rod into the ground.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
One down. Two more to go!
Zippy turns around, heads back up the ramp and disappears into the ship.
A shadow of a man walks forward toward the USS Patriot. A sound of something dropping from within the ship startles the shadow who stops moving. Zippy's voice comes from within the ship.
ZIPPY (o.c.)
Darnnit! Zippy, pay attention to what you are doing!
The shadow walks away.
Zippy whistles as he walks down the ramp carrying another rod. When he descends onto the Venusian ground he turns to his right and walks a few paces.
He stops, lifts the rod with both hands above his head and drives the rod downward into the ground.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
I claim this land for Spain!
He steps back and notices that the rod is leaning slightly.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Hmmm. May need to re-enforce this one a little more.
Zippy crouches down and pushes dirt and sand to the bottom of the rod. He notices a shadow coming beside him and stops moving. He stands and turns suddenly. Nothing is there. Zippy turns and looks at the ground. The shadow is gone.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Think I must have gotten a little to much sun.
Zippy shakes his head and returns to the chore of pushing sand to the base of the rod.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #2
Jessica and Kerr are walking slowly down a gully about ten feet in height. Jessica is pointing the A.L.S. 3000 at the landscape. Kerr is looking around the environment, swaying his gun back and forth as he moves.
JESSICA
Speaking of lakes, look over there! I was wondering if we would find water.
EXT. VENUS POND
As they emerge from the gully, they come across a large pond made up of murky brown liquid. Kerr walks forward and grimaces at the oily liquid.
KERR
Who says it's water?
JESSICA
Could still be romantic though. Care to hold hands and go for a romantic walk?
KERR
I don't find that amusing Doctor.
JESSICA
Oh lighten up a little Bill. I was just teasin'. Kinda.
Jessica and Kerr stare at the water.
KERR
Scan the water Doctor. Do you see anything?
Jessica points the A.L.S. 3000 towards the water.
KERR (CONT'D)
Do you see anything?
JESSICA
I do, but I don't know what it is.
Jessica continues to scan the water back and forth. She stops, focusing in on one spot.
KERR
Do you think it's asbestos?
Jessica's expression changes from curiosity to concern.
JESSICA
No, not unless asbestos moves!
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #3
Sarah is scanning the environment for asbestos with her A.L.S. 3000 while Buzz is walking casually.
SARAH
You know Captain, some people find it possible to serve their country and lead a life outside the office.
BUZZ
A civil servant's work is never done.
SARAH
Come now, Captain. You must do something in your spare time? An adventurer like you must have adventurous tastes!
BUZZ
Well, I must admit, I do enjoy the occasional game of backgammon.
SARAH
Wow! You do live dangerously.
BUZZ
Well, I…
Sarah stops in her tracks and points to the ground with her A.L.S. 3000.
SARAH
Captain! I've found something!
Buzz looks over her shoulder.
BUZZ
What is it?
SARAH
I think, yes, I can't believe it!
BUZZ
What?
SARAH
Asbestos! A small deposit!
Sarah points her finger to a gray web-like substance lying on the ground.
SARAH (CONT'D)
But I don't think there is enough to fix the ship.
BUZZ
Even still, that's a good sign! Mark the position in case we need to come back and get it.
Sarah begins to punch on some buttons of the A.L.S. 3000. They both turn, startled by a scream.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
That's Doc!
They run.
EXT. VENUS CORRIDOR #2
Sarah and Buzz run along the gully.
EXT. VENUS POND
Sarah stops short and screams as Jessica is being pulled into the pond by a tentacle around her waist. Other tentacles are flailing around in the air. The tentacles are green with suction cups on the bottom.
Jessica cries out as she wrestles with the tentacle. Kerr is aiming his rifle at the moving tentacles.
SARAH
What, what is that?
BUZZ
It's some kind of Venusian monster! Stay back, it's dangerous.
SARAH
I thought danger was your middle name?
BUZZ
It is, but it's not yours.
Jessica continues struggling with the tentacle as she grabs hold of it. Kerr prepares to fire at the water. Buzz runs next to Kerr.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
No Bill!
Buzz pushes Kerr's gun downward.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
You might hit the Doctor!
Jessica continues to struggle and tries to push herself up and out of the tentacle's grasp. Other tentacles continue to flail about in the air.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
We'll have to free her with our bare hands!
Buzz and Kerr run towards Jessica and grab her hands. They begin to pull. Jessica yells. Another tentacle wraps itself around Jessica's neck.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Come on Bill. Let's show this thing some American muscle!
Kerr glances sideways at Buzz.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
1...2...3 - Heave!
Buzz yanks on the tentacle around Jessica's waist while Kerr pries at the one around her neck. Jessica yells in a strangled voice.
JESSICA
Get it off me!
Kerr wrenches the tentacle from around Jessica's neck. The tentacle breaks free and hits Kerr in the face leaving a welt on his left cheek.
Buzz loosens the grip of the tentacle around her waist and Jessica squirms free. Buzz and Kerr drag her to safety. A tentacle comes towards Jessica and she kicks it away.
At a safe distance Buzz and Kerr drop Jessica and collapse next to her. They are all breathing deeply. Sarah comes running in and kneels next to Buzz putting her hand on his shoulder.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
You two are my heroes!
KERR
Just doing our job.
BUZZ
We should move to a less dangerous place.
The tentacles sink back into the liquid. The crew get to their feet and dust the sand off of themselves.
KERR
We should get to the ship before nightfall.
BUZZ
Absolutely. Who knows what comes out at night?
SARAH
I sure don't want to know!
JESSICA
Commander! You're wounded! Let me have a look.
Jessica approaches Kerr with a concerned look and puts her hand on Kerr's cheek. She turns his head to examine the welt. Kerr pushes her hand down.
KERR
I've had worse.
BUZZ
Let's go people. We don't need anymore excitement today.
JESSICA
And how!
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Buzz, Kerr, Sarah and Jessica walk towards the USS Patriot. Zippy is walking down the ramp of the ship while cleaning his hands on some rags. He walks over to the crew.
ZIPPY
What happened to y'all?
BUZZ
We'll explain in a minute. Report.
ZIPPY
Well Captain. I've set up an alarm that will let us know if anything comes near the ship. I've rigged an electromagnetic shield to keep away the bogeyman.
Zippy points to the rods in the ground.
BUZZ
Good work, Zippy. And I have some good news for ALL of us! We found a small deposit of asbestos not far from here.
Kerr's welt is now on his right cheek.
KERR
Although that is good news sir, the Doctor and I have news that may bring us some discord.
JESSICA
We found footprints by the lake.
KERR
Yes, bipedal creatures if I'm not mistaken. So it would seem that we don't just have mindless water creatures here!
BUZZ
That is disconcerting. Bipedal…yes.
Buzz strokes his chin.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Yes.
Buzz starts to go into a daze. He continues to rub his chin while deep in thought. He snaps out of it suddenly.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Now let's get some rest.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Sarah is crouching in a corner examining the A.L.S. 3000 which is attached to a computer. Zippy is working at the Common Room table on an electronic box while Kerr is watching over his shoulder. There are wires, tubes and assorted electrical components scattered across the table.
KERR
Are you sure this will work, Zippy?
ZIPPY
Hey, of course it will. I did get a "B" in electronics didn't I?
Jessica climbs down the ladder.
KERR
It looks like a crystal radio-set.
Jessica approaches Zippy and Kerr.
ZIPPY
Oh yeah? Well it will work!
Jessica has a confused look on her face. She slaps a hand on her waist and starts tapping her foot.
JESSICA
Oh Zippy, Billy is just pulling your chain.
KERR
Well, actually-
JESSICA
By the way, has anyone seen my hairbrush?
KERR
What do you mean?
JESSICA
Well, I thought I left it next to my cot in my quarters.
Jessica points towards the top of the ladder.
KERR
I'm sure it will turn up.
Jessica glares at Sarah.
JESSICA
Professor, you didn't borrow my hairbrush without telling me, did you?
SARAH
No, not at all.
Jessica looks at Sarah as if she doesn't believe her. Suddenly a roaring noise comes from outside the ship. Startled, the crew look at each other as an alert siren goes off.
SARAH (CONT'D)
What was that?!
Zippy runs to the porthole and looks outside.
ZIPPY
There's something outside. It's big too! I can tell by it's shadow!
The rest of the group run to position themselves behind Zippy. They all jostle for a better look out the porthole when the ship gives a violent rock. Everyone falls to the ground as the lights dim. The box on the table sparks and control panels begin to beep and light up. Everyone gets to their feet.
Jessica and Zippy run to their stations and stare at their control instruments. Sarah runs to her chair and straps herself in. Kerr returns to the porthole.
KERR
Zippy, I thought you said our electromagnetic shield would work!
Kerr looks from side to side out the porthole.
ZIPPY
It is working! The shield is holding. If it wasn't we'd be in heaps of trouble.
SARAH
You don't think this is heaps of trouble?
JESSICA
This is nothing sister. You're alive aren't you?
Jessica looks at Kerr.
JESSICA
Can you see anything Commander?
KERR
No it must be on the other side of the ship!
The ship is hit by something and twitches violently. Sarah screams as everyone grabs something to steady themselves. Zippy looks into his view finder.
ZIPPY
It's going away.
The lights come up and the alarm stops. The crew look at each other and then to Zippy who is still looking into the view finder.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
All clear.
The crew's shoulders visibly relax.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
I think whatever it was, it was just testing us. You know? Trying to see what we are.
Buzz enters the room from the ladder with a very concerned look on his face.
BUZZ
Zippy! Report!
Zippy looks at his console.
ZIPPY
Everything's OK. Although our power reserves have been seriously depleted.
Buzz runs behind Zippy and looks over his shoulder. Zippy swivels in his chair to face Buzz.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
If we have to get out of here in a hurry, we may have a problem maintaining the shield and taking off at the same time. And the fact that we still have a hole in our ship doesn't help.
BUZZ
My oh my... what a feast of troubles we've run into here. I wouldn't serve this dish to my worst enemy!
Buzz turns, strokes his chin and speaks his thoughts aloud.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
First, our ship has been damaged, and now we've discovered that there are some dangerous creatures that inhabit this strange planet. The only good thing that seems to have happened is our small discovery of asbestos. If we could only find more asbestos then we could fix the ship and get out of here. I worry for the safety of my crew.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Everyone scatters after exiting down the ramp. Jessica examines large dents in the ground while Zippy investigates the hull of the ship with an A.L.S. 3000. Others are examining their surroundings.
JESSICA
Whatever it was, it was big! Look at these tracks. They're huge.
ZIPPY
Boy howdy! You said it Doc!
KERR
That makes two sets of tracks that we've seen. The ones the Professor and I saw were small, almost human like...while these tracks are much bigger.
Buzz puts his hands on his hips and leans back.
BUZZ
Bipedal…yes.
Buzz snaps out of his daze.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Listen up, everyone. The sooner we find asbestos, the sooner we can get off this rock! Zippy, you go with Doc. Professor Brown, come with me. Bill, you're on your own.
Kerr raises an eyebrow.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
As soon as you are finished your scans, report back here. And be careful!!
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #4
Sarah is swaying her A.L.S. 3000 back and forth while Buzz casually monitors the surroundings. He pulls a rock hammer from his space suit and starts looking at the rock formations. He begins chipping away at the rocky wall.
SARAH
So, Captain, how did a guy like you end up in the service of Uncle Sam?
BUZZ
When I reached the age when I could apply, I decided to follow in my mother's footsteps.
SARAH
You're mother was a rocket commander?
BUZZ
No, but she spent a lot of time with enlisted men. Always praised their achievements.
Buzz chips away at a rock in his hand. Parts of the rock crumble off, and fall to the ground. He looks deeply into the rock then throws it away absently.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
After serving in the kitchen of the Central Command, I jumped at the chance to prove myself in Rocket Science. From there it was an easy move to Rocket Captain.
SARAH
Wow! You must really know you stuff!
BUZZ
I try. I studied rocks as a kid.
SARAH
Oh…no. I bet you're the envy of the program.
BUZZ
Well, I do hold a good position.
SARAH
I bet!
Sarah scans in silence.
SARAH (CONT'D)
Captain! More asbestos!
BUZZ
How much?
Buzz moves over to examine the screen of the A.L.S. 3000.
SARAH
It's hard to say.
BUZZ
But is it enough to fix the ship?
SARAH
I don't know. I've never had to fix the wing of a ship before!
BUZZ
Fair play Doctor. We'll have to get Zippy to look at the amount. Take some readings so you can show it to him when we get back.
Sarah begins to punch some buttons.
SARAH
Aye, aye Captain!
BUZZ
Let's move on. Maybe we can find a deposit where we are certain that there will be enough!
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
Sarah scans the environment as Buzz continues to hammer at rocks. He is not even looking at the rocks anymore, simply hammering them off. Eventually, some of the rocks land next to a pile of bones.
BUZZ
Sarah, look at this! There are bones here! But they aren't from any creature I have seen before.
SARAH
They're in a pile just like Etum's! And look! Footprints! They look like they are walking away from the bones.
BUZZ
Let's follow them!
Buzz and Sarah leave looking down as they walk.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY
Sarah and Buzz follow the footsteps to a shrine which is waist high and made of a marble-like substance. The shrine is a large claw with a man stuck in-between frozen in a scream. At the base of the shrine there's a hairbrush, a wrench, a framed picture, a box of hair dye and some more bones.
BUZZ
Wow, look at this. Do you think this shrine means danger?
Sarah lifts one eyebrow and speaks with sarcasm.
SARAH
Do you think?
Buzz stands back and puts his hands on his hips.
BUZZ
There is indeed intelligent life here! This looks like a shrine to a God of some type.
Sarah hugs her body.
SARAH
I feel so alone out here, surrounded by a race of weird things both big and small.
BUZZ
There is nothing to fear, Professor. You are with the finest crew that America has to offer.
Buzz pauses, deep in thought.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
I wish we could communicate with this race of beings! We need a Communications Officer. I wish Etum was still with us.
Sarah snaps out of her despondence and walks back to the shrine.
SARAH
Let's examine this shrine a little more and maybe we can learn more about them.
BUZZ
Look here!
Buzz crouches down to the bottom of the shrine and picks up the hairbrush.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Isn't this Jessica's hairbrush? She did mention that it was missing didn't she?
Sarah points at the wrench on the ground.
SARAH
And, I think I saw Zippy using that wrench before we left.
Buzz is quiet as he moves very slowly to pick up the framed picture. He stares at it. The picture is the same picture he was looking at in his quarters. He begins to whisper.
BUZZ
Whoever they are, they've gone too far.
SARAH
What's that you got there Buzz?
Sarah bends over to look at the picture. She bolts upwards and puts a hand to her mouth.
SARAH (CONT'D)
Oh my.
Buzz doesn't move.
SARAH (CONT'D)
Well, if there was any doubt that these items were ours, we now know for sure.
Sarah points to the hair coloring box.
SARAH (CONT'D)
But wait, whose hair coloring is that?
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #6
Kerr is pointing his gun around as he walks through the corridor. Kerr notices a rope on the ground and bends down to pick it up. He moves the rope back and forth in his hands.
KERR
Wow, this has the same texture and feel as asbestos. If it is asbestos, it sure is in a weird form. I have never heard of asbestos, in a rope-like fashion.
Kerr examines the asbestos rope further, holding it up to the sun.
KERR (CONT'D)
However, it does match the Professor's description. I wonder what could have manufactured asbestos into a rope. And, more importantly, why?
Kerr follows the rope through broken vegetation.
EXT. VENUS RIDGE FRONT
Kerr encounters a ridge and begins to climb it.
EXT. VENUS RIDGE TOP
Kerr secures a spot at the top of the ridge. He sees something that shocks him and starts to fumble through his jacket, looking through pockets.
He opens the pocket on his thigh and pulls out a pair of binoculars. He stares through them, looks around and then lowers them as his jaw drops. He raises the binoculars again. He lowers them again. He speaks slowly with great concern.
KERR (CONT'D)
I need to warn the others.
EXT. VENUS rocky corridor #7
Jessica is scanning the environment with her A.L.S. 3000. Zippy wipes his forehead.
ZIPPY
Jeepers! It's hot!
JESSICA
We are much closer to the sun, Zippy.
ZIPPY
Yeah, but that don't mean I gotta like it!
JESSICA
I'm sure that you would like it better than serving in other extreme environments. How would you like to serve in Canada?
ZIPPY
When you cozy down with the dogs, it ain't that cold.
JESSICA
Oh, Zippy.
Zippy reaches into his pocket and pulls out his lucky dice.
ZIPPY
You know, I can't help it, but I feel like we're being watched.
Jessica stops in her tracks.
JESSICA
I think you might be right. I think I've got something.
Zippy starts to play with his dice nervously.
ZIPPY
Jeez Doc, I bet you got a lot of things. Don't give any of them to me!
Jessica is holding the scanner to her left.
JESSICA
I'm serious! Some kind of life form.
ZIPPY
Where?
Jessica turns her head but doesn't move the scanner.
JESSICA
Right beside us!
Zippy walks over and looks to the direction where the scanner is pointed.
ZIPPY
I don't see anything.
JESSICA
I don't see anything either but there's something on the infrared!
Zippy drops his dice and bends down to pick them up.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
It seems like something is coming towards us!
A spear flies over Zippy's head. Zippy stands immediately.
ZIPPY
I think the natives may be restless Doc.
Zippy falls to the ground as if tackled by an invisible being. He rolls onto one knee while grabbing at invisible arms that are strangling him.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
I...something has got...me!
Shadows on a nearby rock show Zippy being strangled by a man. Jessica screams.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Help me Doc!
Jessica looks confused.
JESSICA
What should I do?
Zippy rolls around on the ground grunting.
ZIPPY
I don't know. You said you could see them with your scanner!
JESSICA
Right!
Jessica pulls out the scanner and points it to Zippy rolling on the ground.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
Zippy! There's one fighting you!
ZIPPY
Gee wilikers Doc. I meant use the scanners to help me!
JESSICA
Right!
Jessica runs over with the A.L.S. 3000, watches it briefly and lifts it above her head. Shadows on a near by rock show Jessica hitting the invisible being in the head with the scanner. The invisible being's shadow clutches his head and runs away.
Zippy stands up and Jessica rushes over.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
Are you OK?
ZIPPY
Yeah. I am as fine as apple pie on Sunday afternoon. Where is that thing?
They both look around at their surroundings. Jessica stops suddenly and reaches down to grab the scanner. She starts to use it to scan the environment.
JESSICA
I don't know. The scanner doesn't show it anymore. I think it ran away.
ZIPPY
Good!
Zippy collapses to the ground.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Whew!
Jessica bends down next to Zippy.
JESSICA
Let me have a look at you.
Jessica looks at his neck and opens his eyelids wide.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
You're OK. Good thing you got a hard head.
ZIPPY
I don't feel so good.
JESSICA
I'm not surprised. I think you are OK, but I want you to go straight back to the ship.
ZIPPY
No argument here!
JESSICA
I'm going to find the Captain and let him know what happened. Now you get going.
ZIPPY
Aye, aye, sir.
Zippy gets up and staggers away. Jessica gathers her equipment and runs in the opposite direction.
EXT. VENUS rocky corridor #8
Buzz and Sarah are walking along the Venusian terrain. Sarah is scanning the environment with her A.L.S. 3000.
SARAH
If things continue to go as they are, we should be able to wrap up soon. I think there is enough asbestos on this planet to warrant some harvesting.
BUZZ
That's swell news, Professor. I think the crew will be happy to hear it. Not to mention the people of America!
Sarah looks sideways at Buzz with a playful smirk.
SARAH
Once again, Captain Buzz Stone and his fearless crew will have saved the Red, White and Blue.
BUZZ
Just doing what any patriotic American would do.
SARAH
You are the bravest man I've ever known!
BUZZ
Well, thank-you, Professor Brown.
SARAH
Enough of this "Professor" stuff! Call me Sarah.
Jessica runs in.
JESSICA
Captain! Zippy and I were attacked while we were surveying for asbestos!
BUZZ
Attacked! Egad!
JESSICA
It was some kind of invisible humanoid.
BUZZ
Hmmm... I think that Uncle Sam is going to have to do some extermination when he comes to get the asbestos. We should head back to the ship.
EXT. VENUS base camp
Zippy, sitting on a box at the base of the ship's ramp, is nursing his wounds.
ZIPPY
Man this is worse than a hang-over.
Kerr runs in.
KERR
What happened to you?
ZIPPY
I was attacked. I should have listened to those idiots at Space Traffic Control; this place isn't safe at all!
KERR
I know. I have found something that may explain the attack on our ship.
Buzz, Sarah and Jessica run in.
BUZZ
Zippy, are you alright?
ZIPPY
Aw, it's nothing that a little whiskey wouldn't fix.
Jessica pulls out a flask from within her suit.
BUZZ
Well, we'll have to hold off on that drink.
Jessica looks disappointed as she puts her flask back in her suit.
BUZZ
The Professor and I have found what looks like a shrine.
KERR
A shrine you say? Interesting. I found what appears to be a giant lair!
ZIPPY
Hey! Did you forget that I was attacked by invisible people?
All members of the team start jabbering at each other.
BUZZ
People! Get yourselves together! In one form or another, we've all witnessed something…and something that isn't inviting us over for some sweet apple pie. Let's get into the ship where it's safe.
Everyone nods their heads in agreement. They all board the ship.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Everyone is seated except Buzz and Kerr.
BUZZ
The way I see it, we have a race of invisible people who build shrines to a huge beast that lives in the lair that Bill found.
Buzz points to Sarah. She starts to unload the hairbrush, frame, etc. from her back-pack.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
These items were found at the shrine.
Jessica points to the brush.
JESSICA
Hey! That's my hairbrush!
Zippy points as well.
ZIPPY
My favorite wrench!
BUZZ
And just out of curiosity, whose hair dye is that? Natural blonde?
Kerr looks anxious.
KERR
Maybe we weren't the first people to come here.
Kerr looks out of the corners of his eyes.
KERR (cONT'D)
Captain, I was able to grab a sample of the material that the lair was made of. Professor, is this asbestos?
Kerr produces a sample of the rope from his pocket. He walks over to Sarah as he holds it out in front of him. Sarah takes the sample.
SARAH
Why yes, I believe it is!
KERR
Well there's plenty more where that came from! It seems that the beast's lair is made of asbestos! In fact, there should be more than enough to fix the ship and enough for Uncle Sam to harvest!
Buzz claps his hands together.
BUZZ
OK, let's go and check it out.
SARAH
What if the invisible people attack us again?
BUZZ
Well, we have the scanners and Commander Kerr does have his rifle. But, let's be cautious. I'd hoped that it wouldn't come to this, but we should all arm ourselves. Get your weapons.
The crew gets out of their seats and scatters towards the cabinets along the wall. Sarah remains in her chair.
SARAH
Wait a minute, I don't have one. I'm a civilian remember?
BUZZ
Don't worry, stick with me and I'll watch over you.
Sarah raises an eyebrow and smiles.
SARAH
Is that a promise?
EXT. VENUS rocky corridor #6
The crew walks over the Venusian terrain in single file.
EXT. VENUS RIDGE FRONT
They ascend the ridge where Kerr made his discovery.
ZIPPY
Gees Louise, Bill. Are we there yet?
KERR
Just a little farther.
EXT. VENUS RIDGE TOP
The crew each poke their heads over the top of the ridge.
JESSICA
Wow.
ZIPPY
Jeepers.
SARAH (HAND TO MOUTH)
Oh my goodness.
BUZZ
Whatever lives in there is enormous.
KERR
I concur.
BUZZ
How do we know it's not in there right now?
KERR
We don't. But it's a risk we have to take.
EXT. VENUS RIDGE BACK
The crew descends the ridge.
EXT. VENUS CAVE
At the entrance of the lair there is a web-like substance which covers all the walls. Each crew member independently reaches out and touches the substance.
KERR (CONT'D)
This is what I was talking about. I believe the monster that lives in that lair makes webs out of asbestos.
SARAH
You're right. I don't even need to look at my equipment. This is definitely asbestos.
ZIPPY
Wow, a creature that spins a web of asbestos? Could you imagine if we captured it?
Sarah looks nervous. She gestures to the asbestos.
SARAH
Forget it! Let's just cut away what we need and go home!
JESSICA
Cutting some away could alert the creature that we are here!
KERR
That's a risk we have to take. We need the asbestos to get home.
BUZZ
Bill's right. Let's get what we need, get home and let Uncle Sam take over from there! All agree?
The crew nod their heads.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Bill, use you rifle to cut a swath out of the web.
Kerr lifts his gun and looks at it. He returns his gaze to Buzz.
KERR
The rifle was not designed to cut asbestos. I think we should chop away at it.
Buzz ponders this statement and turns to Zippy.
BUZZ
Zippy! You have a machete! Will you do the honours?
Zippy proceeds forward and hacks away at the asbestos with his machete.
ZIPPY
Wow, this is really tough.
Zippy continues to slice at the asbestos. Sarah wanders off, poking at stuff. Zippy slashes furiously. Finally, the crew watches as a piece falls. Buzz looks at the crew and then looks around.
BUZZ
Where is the Professor?
The crew looks around.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Zippy, Doc, you two take the asbestos back to the ship. Bill, take Jessica's scanner and come with me. I think the invisible natives have kidnapped the Professor.
Jessica hands her A.L.S. 3000 to Kerr.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
I'll bet you dimes to dozens that I know where they've taken her.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Zippy and Jessica arrive at the ramp of the USS Patriot. They begin to collect equipment and perimeter rods.
JESSICA
We have to hurry. When those three get back, we're going to need to be ready to take off. Who knows what will be following them when they arrive!
ZIPPY
You're right as rain Doc. But I'm going to need your help. While I fix the wing, you have to get the ship ready for take-off.
JESSICA
But I don't know how to do that!
ZIPPY
Don't worry Doc. I'll walk you through it.
JESSICA
OK, but I think you have too much confidence in me. I am only a woman after all!
ZIPPY
Awe Doc, we'll be as ready for them as a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.
They board the ship up the ramp.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL top
Buzz and Kerr crawl to the top of a hill and peer over the edge. Kerr takes his A.L.S. 3000 and scans in front of him.
BUZZ
What do you see on the scanner Bill?
KERR
It's odd. Without the scanner, I don't see much. But with the scanner I see dozens of beings. They're all looking at something.
BUZZ
What? What are they looking at Bill?
Kerr moves his scanner in a new direction.
KERR
I see Sarah!
BUZZ
What? Where?
Kerr points.
KERR
Over there!
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL top
Sarah is tied "King Kong style" between two pillars made of marble on top of a hill with asbestos rope. She pushes her chest forward as she tries desperately to break free. Half delirious, Sarah is moaning.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL TOP
Kerr continues to scan and slowly pulls out his binoculars. While still looking through the scanner, he hands the binoculars to Buzz. Buzz glances at the binoculars and reaches out for them while returning his gaze in front of him.
Buzz and Kerr seem frozen. Buzz slowly lifts the binoculars to his eyes and gazes for a moment.
BUZZ
I think this race is offering her as a sacrifice.
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL top
Sarah starts to regain consciousness. She wakes up and screams.
Baritone male grunts and chants crescendo to drown out Sarah's continuous screams.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL TOP
Buzz lowers his binoculars while Kerr lowers his A.L.S. 3000.
KERR
What's that noise?
BUZZ
The beings...they're...they're chanting. I think they are calling the beast!
A screeching roar echoes across the valley.
Kerr lifts the A.L.S. 3000 and starts swaying it back and forth. Buzz seems more curious than concerned. Kerr looks left and points.
KERR
Look! The beast, it's coming.
EXT. VENUS CRAB PATH HILL
Giant crab claws begin to rise from behind a hill, followed by a flat crab head with black eyes. Legs crawl of the top of the hill.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL TOP
Buzz and Kerr stand.
BUZZ
How can we rescue her with so many invisible foes around?
Kerr lifts the A.L.S. 3000 to look at the invisible people.
KERR
We may not have to worry about that. All the beings are running away. They seem to be afraid.
The beast roars.
BUZZ
Perhaps the beast can see them. We should act now! Now's our chance. Bill, cover me. Don't shoot unless you have to.
KERR
Roger.
Buzz stealthily begins to creep down the hill. Kerr puts down the scanner and pulls out his gun. He points towards Buzz's direction.
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL top
Sarah continues to struggle with the rope. She stops as she sees the beast. She lets out a blood curdling Hollywood scream. She yanks at the ropes harder. She continuously looks back and forth between the ropes holding her and at the creature.
EXT. VENUS CRAB PATH HILL
The crabs mandibles move quickly as if licking its lips.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL FRONT
Buzz runs down the hill yelling.
BUZZ
Hold on Professor, I'm coming for you!
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL FRONT
Buzz grasps at the sand as he climbs the hill toward the sacrificial ground.
EXT. VENUS sacrificial hill top
Sarah stops struggling when she notices Buzz is there to save her. She yells with hero-worship in her voice.
SARAH
Buzz!
Buzz reaches Sarah.
BUZZ
Don't worry Professor, I'll get you out of this.
Buzz tries to free Sarah from the ropes.
EXT. VENUS CRAB PATH HILL
Roaring, the beast crawls faster.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY HILL TOP
Kerr jumps on top of the hill. He stands tall, lifts his gun to his shoulder and stares down the view finder at the crab. He fires two shots and then runs down the hill and into the valley.
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL TOP
Buzz struggles with the ropes and finally frees Sarah. She speaks again with hero worship.
SARAH
Oh Buzz!
Sarah hugs Buzz who turns his body and returns the hug with one arm. He faces the monster and looks away from Sarah as he speaks.
BUZZ
Professor. There's no time for this now. We have to go.
EXT. VENUS SACRIFICIAL HILL FRONT
Buzz and Sarah run down the hill holding hands.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY
Buzz, Sarah and Kerr all meet together. They turn to face the crab.
EXT. VENUS CRAB PATH HILL
The crab stares down at the team.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY
Sarah looks anxious to go. Buzz looks stoic with clenched fists on his hips. Kerr looks determined.
KERR
The good thing about the size of that monster is that it'll take a while for it to catch us.
SARAH
I don't know Commander. I'm thinking that the size would act in it's favor! After all, since it's steps are much larger it can cover more ground.
BUZZ
You're right. Let's just hope that the invisible beings haven't figured out that their ritual has been ruined and come back for revenge.
They begin to run.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
Buzz, Sarah and Kerr run faster occasionally looking behind them.
EXT. VENUS SHRINE VALLEY
Continuing its pursuit he beast crawls into the valley.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
Buzz, Sarah and Kerr run towards the ship in the distance.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Buzz, Kerr and Sarah make it to the bottom of the Patriot's ramp.
BUZZ
Quick, let's get on board!
SARAH
Don't worry, I'll get in the ship as fast as I can!
Sarah runs up the ramp and into the ship. Buzz and Kerr look at each other and both lift their shoulders in a shrug. Kerr turns with his gun at the ready.
KERR
Buzz, hurry, get on the ship, I'll distract the creature when it gets here.
BUZZ
Okay.
Buzz turns to leave. Kerr still is looking away from Buzz.
KERR
No time to argue, Buzz.
Buzz stops and turns. He realizes that Bill is still talking.
KERR (CONT'D)
Someone has to get the Patriot going. Zippy can't do it himself!
Buzz walks down the ramp and puts his hand on Kerr's shoulders.
BUZZ
Very well, Bill. Keep that thing busy. We only need a minute.
Buzz turns and runs up the ramp.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
The beast crawls towards the Base Camp.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr raises his gun to his shoulder. He peers through the rifle scope and prepares to fire.
His trigger finger moves slightly.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Buzz runs in. The crew are at their stations flipping switches and turning dials. Sarah notices Buzz.
SARAH
Where's Bill?
BUZZ
He's coming. He's just keeping that thing busy while we initiate liftoff.
Buzz runs towards the ladder and begins to climb.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr, still standing with his gun to his shoulder, fires one shot.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
The crab is not affected and looks down at Kerr.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr lowers his gun. He brushes his hand across his mouth and lifts his gun to his shoulder again. He shoots once more.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The crew is at their stations, still playing with dials and pushing buttons. The intercom crackles.
BUZZ (o.C.)
Are we all ready Zippy?
Zippy pushes a button and speaks into his intercom.
ZIPPY
I am glad to report that the wing is fixed! What concerns me is our power supply. We have enough to take off, but I am not sure if we have enough to maintain the shields at the same time. I will give you all she has to give Captain!
BUZZ (o.C.)
That will have to be good enough.
Sarah starts grabbing her chair with a clenched jaw.
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr is shooting at the beast as he is backing up to the ramp. The beast is roaring, quickly approaching Kerr (despite its size). The beast does not seem affected by the bullets.
Kerr reaches the ramp. He has a determined look on his face and he brings the gun down from his shoulder and starts shooting from the hip like a mad man.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz is at his station looking over his and Kerr's controls. He pushes the intercom button and leans in to speak.
BUZZ
Initiating sequence. Zippy, give me what you can.
Zippy's voice comes over the intercom.
ZIPPY (o.C.)
I'm giving it all we can afford. We gotta keep the shield or we're crab food!
Buzz pushes the intercom button again.
BUZZ
Do what you can.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy is playing with dials at his console. He pushes a button and speaks through the intercom speaker.
ZIPPY
You should have enough for complete liftoff.
BUZZ (o.C.)
Roger. Any sign of Bill?
Jessica unstraps herself and runs to the window. She looks out the port hole from side to side. Finally, she stops and stares.
JESSICA
He's just outside. So is that thing!
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr continues to shoot towards the creature.
EXT. VENUS ROCKY CORRIDOR #5
The beast approaches Kerr.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Jessica is still looking out the porthole.
JESSICA
The Commander is doing a great job! The beast seems to be slowing!
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
Kerr continues shooting. He stops and stares at the beast.
KERR
The Sarge always told us soldiers to beware of crabs.
He turns towards the ship and proceeds up the ramp. A spear hits him in the back. Kerr drops his gun as his arms spread outward. He yells and tries to grab the spear in his back.
EXT. USS PATRIOT PORT HOLE
Jessica's face reacts in horror.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
JESSICA
Bill! He's been hit by a spear! We have to help him!
EXT. VENUS landing zone
The beast approaches the USS Patriot.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy unstraps himself, runs to the window and stands next to Jessica. He looks over Jessica's shoulder.
ZIPPY
No doc! It's too late. Look!
EXT. VENUS BASE CAMP
The beast's claw grips Kerr around the waist. Blood spurts out of Kerr's mouth. His eyes pop open and he screams in agony.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Jessica gasps and raises a hand to her mouth. Zippy closes his eyes.
EXT. VENUS landing zone
The beast lifts Kerr in the air waving it's claw triumphantly.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz pushes his intercom button and speaks into the speaker.
BUZZ
Zippy! What's going on?
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy, distraught, leaves Jessica at the window and proceeds back to his station. When he arrives, he hits the button for the intercom.
ZIPPY
I don't think Bill will be coming with us. He's dead, Buzz.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz closes his eyes tightly, leans his head backwards and starts shaking his fists violently in the air as he yells.
BUZZ
Bill!
Buzz bows his head in silence.
int. usS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Jessica grabs hold of the porthole and bows her head. She raises her head and places an outstretched hand on the glass. Zippy pushes his intercom button and leans in.
ZIPPY
If we want to make it, Captain, we'd better go now!
Sarah unstraps herself and rushes over to Jessica. She rubs Jessica's back.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
Come on ladies, strap yourselves in. We need to split.
Sarah and Jessica sit down next to each other. They put on their belts and clasp hands crying. Zippy, straps himself in quickly. Buzz's voice comes over the intercom.
BUZZ (o.C.)
Starting launch.
The warning lights and alarm begin to sound. The Common Room begins to shake. Everyone looks a little apprehensive.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
The cockpit is shaking. Buzz is playing with dials and occasionally reaches over to Kerr's station to flip switches and turn dials. He pushes a button quickly and speaks into the intercom.
BUZZ
Taking her up!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The room begins to shake violently. Sarah closes her eyes and squeezes Jessica's hand even harder. Zippy is frantically pushing buttons.
EXT. VENUS landing zone
The beast reaches out toward the ship.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
The cockpit is violently shaking. Buzz looks intense.
BUZZ
Where ever you are Bill, sing with me!
Buzz begins to sing "America The Beautiful".
BUZZ
O beautiful for spacious skies...
EXT. VENUS landing zone
The beast grabs a hold of the USS Patriot in one of its claws. It shakes the Patriot slightly as it tries to prevent the ship from taking off.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
ZIPPY
Captain! The beast has got a hold of us!
A loud roaring noise comes from outside while the ship continues to shake.
ZIPPY
Adjusting shields!
Zippy plays with dials frantically.
ZIPPY
We gotta get out of here likity-split! Our energy is going down like gangbusters!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz continues to focus on the dials while he sings. He pushes a button and speaks into the intercom.
BUZZ
I hear you, Zippy!
The shaking continues.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
Zippy! Can you short the electric systems to the shields so that there is one tremendous pulse? Maybe we can fry that monster!
Buzz releases the button.
ZIPPY (OVER INTERCOM)
I don't know Captain. That could cause serious damage to all our systems. We might not reach escape velocity.
BUZZ
I don't think we have much choice. Do it!
ZIPPY (O.C.)
OK, Captain, but they better not bill me for the damage!
BUZZ
Hurry up! I'm losing lateral control!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
ZIPPY
Compensating for thrust control…
Zippy unstraps himself and gets out of his seat. He approaches a large cabinet which has several dials and buttons. He plays with some of the controls.
ZIPPY
…making necessary adjustments for an electric pulse.
EXT. VENUS landing zone
The beast roars as it holds the ship in its claw.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy looks very determined as he continues to play with dials. Buzz's voice comes over the intercom.
BUZZ (OVER INTERCOM)
Talk to me, chief!
ZIPPY
Almost…
Zippy crouches down and turns a dial.
ZIPPY
…almost…
Zippy reaches high and flips a switch.
ZIPPY
Go for it Captain! You have the control. Hit the Shield Flux button.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz looks for the button around his console. He sees a button with a piece of tape above it with writing written by black marker which reads "Shield Flux".
BUZZ
This one's for Uncle Sam!
Buzz pushes the button and the lights in the cockpit dim.
EXT. VENUS landing zone
Blue lightning bolts emanate from the ship and surround the creature. The creature does not react any differently, but instead releases a violent roar.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The ship experiences a violent jerk. Zippy loses his balance and falls towards his console. He regains his balance and sits back in his chair. Buzz speaks through the intercom.
BUZZ (o.C.)
Zippy! Any luck? Status report!
Zippy looks into a view finder.
ZIPPY
It didn't work Captain.
BUZZ (o.C.)
That would explain why we haven't gone anywhere. We'll have to do it again.
ZIPPY
I don't think that we have enough juice left Captain! If we tried again, I don't think that we would have enough energy left over to lift off.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
Well, that's no good! We're gonna need to do something! Put your thinking cap on Zippy! I am open to ideas! I just need them quickly!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The ship suddenly jerks. A roar comes from outside the ship. Sarah buries her face into her lap. Jessica looks very nervous and grabs onto her chair with one hand and pulls out her flask with the other. Buzz comes over the intercom again.
BUZZ (o.C.)
Zippy! I think all we did was make it angry!
Jessica takes a swig from her flask.
JESSICA
He thinks we made it angry?
ZIPPY
Captain! I have an idea!
JESSICA
Thank goodness.
BUZZ (o.C.)
I am all ears Zippy.
ZIPPY
We should be able to pull some of the moisture from Venus' atmosphere. If we can get enough, we should be able to fill our coolant tanks.
BUZZ
Go on.
ZIPPY
If we redirect the water out the exhaust, the heat from the thrusters would cause it to steam. We would be engulfed with a cloud of steam, as well as anything in a 50 meter radius.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz looks confused. He pushes his intercom button.
BUZZ
You mean, steam that creature? Like a crab?
ZIPPY (o.C.)
I think it just might work!
BUZZ
Well, how long will it take to make the necessary changes?
ZIPPY (o.C.)
Perhaps 30 seconds.
BUZZ
And how long will our shields hold?
ZIPPY (O.C.)
Perhaps 10 seconds.
BUZZ
Then I'm giving you 10 seconds to make the necessary changes Zippy! Make them count!
ZIPPY (O.C.)
Yes sir!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy gets up from his chair and runs over to a console. He starts playing with various dials and buttons. Jessica takes another swig while Sarah continues to burry her face in her lap. Zippy runs back to his console and pushes a couple of buttons. He watches his console and his eyes widen. He speaks to Buzz over the intercom.
ZIPPY
Captain! It's working! The coolant tanks are filling!
BUZZ (O.C.)
Excellent! How much longer Zippy? I can feel the Patriot starting to weaken!
ZIPPY
Just a couple of more seconds Captain.
Loud sounds of crunching metal fill the air. Sarah raises her head out of her lap and screams.
JESSICA
Hurry up Zippy! This thing is going to crush us and throw us away like an empty can of Asbestos Cola!
ZIPPY
OK! We're all set Captain! Release the coolant tanks!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
This one is for Uncle Sam!
Buzz pushes a button on his console.
EXT. venus landing zone
The beast is still holding onto the USS Patriot. Steam starts to come out the bottom of the ship which envelops the beast. A scream of a lobster being boiled screeches through the air.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The room shakes violently and Zippy is thrown from his feet. He falls to the ground and knocks himself unconscious.
Suddenly the shaking stops.
JESSICA
Zippy! Zippy!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz has a very happy look on his face. He shouts into the intercom for Zippy.
BUZZ
The Venusian monster! It let go! Zippy! You're a genius! Who would have ever thought? Zippy?
JESSICA
Zippy is unconscious, Buzz. And he isn't getting up soon.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Jessica unstraps herself and runs over to Zippy. She bends down and starts looking him over for injuries. Seeing none, she begins to lightly shake him. As she does, Buzz checks in from over the intercom.
BUZZ
Doc! When we tried to electrocute the beast, we used too much energy. I need you to take the power from the shield and redirect it to the rockets.
JESSICA
How, do I do that?
BUZZ (o.c.)
Look on the console. You will see a switch labeled "shield." Turn it off!
JESSICA
OK. I'm turning it off.
The main lights come up accompanied by a "whirring" sound. Jessica looks around with a smile.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
Good work! Now adjust the power dial until it points to "All Available Power."
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
JESSICA
OK, just a sec.
Jessica's hand is on the console next to a large dial that has a pointer. Currently the dial is pointing to "half power" although "All Available Power" is written not too far away.
JESSICA
I can't find it!
BUZZ
It should be right in front of you!
Jessica leans in close to the console as if she needs glasses. She stomps her foot in anger.
JESSICA (CONT'D)
OK, Buzz. I am looking!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
The ship begins to shake again.
BUZZ
The ship needs that energy Doc. We're going to have to act quickly. I need you to turn that dial to "All Available Power".
JESSICA
All,... OK, found it!
BUZZ
Now turn the dial to "All Available Power".
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Jessica reaches out as she speaks.
JESSICA
Here goes nothing!
Jessica turns the dial to "All Available Power". Jessica is thrown to the ground as the ship jolts. Zippy's limp body rolls. Sarah screams.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz is holding onto his console tightly.
EXT. venus' atmosphere
The USS Patriot exits Venus's atmosphere.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
Hang on, folks. Just another few seconds!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The sound and vibrations of the ship stop. Jessica runs over to the body of Zippy. Buzz comes in over the intercom.
BUZZ (O.C.)
We've exited the Venusian atmosphere. Everyone OK?
JESSICA
I think so, Captain. I am just looking over Zippy now, but he looks OK.
Jessica removes her flask and gives Zippy a little swig. Zippy coughs and regains consciousness. He looks up into Jessica's eyes.
ZIPPY
Wow. I must be dead, I see an angel. Gimme a kiss!
JESSICA
Don't be silly Zippy. Any pain?
ZIPPY
Just the one in my heart.
JESSICA
I think you'll live.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz looks relieved.
BUZZ
Good work, Doc. I'm taking us home.
JESSICA (o.c.)
I'm glad to hear it, Captain.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The lights of the room light up again. Sarah unstraps herself as Jessica and Zippy stand up. They all gather together.
JESSICA
You OK, Professor Brown?
SARAH
Yes, I think so. And call me Sarah.
JESSICA
I want to apologize for being so hard on you.
SARAH
Ah, that's OK, Doctor. What's a girl to do?
JESSICA
Call me Jessica. You're alright.
Sarah and Jessica embrace and rub each other's backs. They step away from each other with smiles on their faces.
ZIPPY
Hey, Doc, ever thought about becoming an engineer? The profession could use some more dames.
JESSICA
No, Zippy. I couldn't do your job. It's far too technical. Engineering is a job best left for men.
Buzz climbs down the ladder and strides over to the group with a look of great pride.
BUZZ
We are alright for now, but we may have some trouble when we reach the earth's atmosphere. Zippy, can you check the systems?
ZIPPY
Sure thing.
Zippy returns to his console. Jessica walks over to Buzz.
JESSICA
Any injuries, Captain?
BUZZ
No, Doc. I'm OK.
Zippy speaks over his shoulder from his console.
ZIPPY
I think we will be fine if we build enough power between here and Earth.
Zippy turns to face Buzz.
BUZZ
Take any unnecessary systems offline.
ZIPPY
Aye aye, sir.
Zippy turns back to his console. Sarah walks over to Buzz and Jessica.
SARAH
I can't wait to get back on Earth so I can get a good night's sleep. What about you Jessica?
JESSICA
I could use a drink, and, some sleep.
Zippy speaks over his shoulder again.
ZIPPY
I can't wait to get a decent meal. Anyone for seafood?
JESSICA
Oh, Zippy.
They all laugh except Buzz.
BUZZ
That's tasteless, Zippy.
Buzz has a serious look on his face as he ponders the joke. He cracks a smile.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
But funny! Ha ha ha ha! I guess this is one seafood dish that Bill won't see. Ha ha ha ha. Maybe we could ask Bill!?! Ha ha ha ha...
No one else is laughing. They are all staring at Buzz with looks of disgust.
INT. uss patriot ceremonial room
The crew sobs lightly as they stare at pictures of Etum and Bill. The pictures are surrounded by candles.
ZIPPY
We are here to remember Bill and Etum. Both of whom gave their lives in the service of their country.
Jessica and Sarah look somber and bow their heads.
ZIPPY (CONT'D)
For this we will always be grateful. We will remember them with heavy hearts and fond memories. They have done their country proud and will live on in the hearts of patriotic Americans forever! Their sacrifice was not in vain. We salute them!
Zippy salutes.
Sarah and Jessica have their faces in their hands. Jessica raises her head and salutes.
Buzz, unseen till now, is sobbing with his face buried in his hands. His shoulders bob gently, which slowly begin to bob more and more until he suddenly jerks his head upwards with a large smile.
BUZZ (CONT'D)
And watch out for crabs! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Jessica breaks down into tears and runs away screaming and crying. Zippy has a look of disgust. Buzz, clutching his stomach, continues to laugh hysterically.

The USS Patriot flies through space with a super-imposed calendar flipping pages indicating the passage of time.
EXT. earth orbit
The USS Patriot approaches the Earth.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Zippy is playing with his dice while Sarah and Jessica are talking to each other at their stations. Buzz's voice comes over the intercom.
BUZZ (O.C.)
OK crew! We're approaching Earth! Time to get ready!
The crew stop what they are doing and strap themselves in.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz is humming to himself. He stops, raises an eyebrow and pushes a button for the intercom.
BUZZ
Zippy, let's hope that your repairs are true American blue.
ZIPPY
I got my fingers and my toes crossed!
EXT. earth orbit
The USS Patriot is closer to the Earth.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
Here we go. Let's land this thing.
EXT. earth orbit
The ship turns downwards towards Earth. Flames begin to engulf.
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The entire room shakes. Everyone holds on.
ZIPPY
She's holding!
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz keeps tilting his head as if he hears some noises coming from the ship. He speaks into the intercom.
BUZZ
Zippy! I think we're in trouble!
ZIPPY (o.c.)
No Captain, we're as fine as fine can be!
EXT. earth's atmosphere
The ship is completely engulfed with flames as it progresses through the atmosphere.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
BUZZ
Zippy, I think there's a problem with the wing that was damaged. Our balance seems a little off.
ZIPPY (O.c.)
Really? My controls say everything is OK.
BUZZ
ZIPPY! I can feel her! She's slipping to one side!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
The lights on Zippy's control panel begin to flash.
ZIPPY
Jeepers! The Captain is right!
Zippy plays with the controls on his console.
ZIPPY
Compensating for the weakened wing!
BUZZ (o.c.)
Much better! Good work Zippy.
ZIPPY
Thanks Captain!
All the shaking stops and there is nothing but silence.
INT. USS PATRIOT COCKPIT
Buzz is obviously relieved.
BUZZ
We're through the atmosphere! We're through!
Darryl from Air Traffic Control comes through on the intercom.
DARRYL (O.C.)
USS Patriot, we see you on our radar. Respond Patriot.
BUZZ
This is the USS Patriot, all systems are go!
INT. USS PATRIOT COMMON ROOM
Sarah has tears of joy as she reaches over and hugs Jessica. Reggie's voice comes through the intercom.
REGGIE (O.C.)
Welcome home Eagle. The nest is looking forward to having you back to roost.

BUZZ
Roger. It's good to be back in the good ole U.S. of A!

A futuristic building stands tall overlooking a river. (Same as opening).
INT. COMMAND CENTER BRIEFING ROOM
Buzz and Sarah are at the front of the room while everyone else is sitting and standing throughout.
The door to the room opens and Buzz steps through and stands at attention.
BUZZ
Admiral in the briefing room!
Everyone snaps to attention. The Admiral strides into the room with large sweeping steps. He reaches the front of the room and turns an about-face.
ADMIRAL
As you were. Please be seated.
Everyone in the room gets a chair and sits down. The Admiral walks over to the podium and stands behind it.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
I have gathered you here for one purpose: to congratulate you on your valiant effort. While serving on the Venus mission, Dr. Brown has provided enough data to warrant acquisition of Venus's resources. The report that Captain Stone has given me has detailed your heroic actions and has given us sufficient warning about the hostile creatures that inhabit our neighboring planet. As I speak, our extermination force is being assembled to deal with the dangers on Venus. So, on behalf of the President and the people of the United States of America, thank you!
Everyone applauds. The Admiral smiles while he joins in their clapping. When he finishes, he turns to Buzz.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
Captain…
The crew stand and snap to attention. Buzz walks up to the Admiral and salutes. The Admiral returns Buzz's salute. The Admiral turns and faces the rest of the crew and salutes. They all return the salute.
BUZZ
Dismissed.
The crew begin to leave. Zippy, Darryl and Reggie leave first.
ZIPPY
So I was messed up but, zoinks! You should've seen the invisible guy!
REGGIE
Gee, Zippy. You're a real hero!
ZIPPY
You bet!
Jessica and Sarah follow.
JESSICA
Again, Sarah. I'm glad we were able to work out our differences.
SARAH
Naw. Don't mention it, Jessica. Say, I'm having lingerie party next week. Want to come?
JESSICA
Sure!
Sarah and Jessica hug while rubbing each others' backs. They leave. The Admiral and Buzz are the only two left in the room.
ADMIRAL
Thank you, Buzz. Once again you have made us proud under the most difficult circumstances. You will get a medal for this.
BUZZ
Just doing my duty for the best country in the world!
The Admiral puts a hand on Buzz's shoulder.
ADMIRAL
Well, Buzz. If you want anything, anything at all, just ask. I will do anything in my power to get it for you.
Buzz pauses.
BUZZ
Well, Admiral. There is one thing.
The Admiral starts to walk away and puts his arm around Buzz.
ADMIRAL
What is it Buzz? A new spaceship?
BUZZ
No, no, no. The Patriot is the only ship that I want.
They stop walking.
ADMIRAL
Then what is it? Just tell me.
BUZZ
Well, Admiral. I could do with a piece of your wife's apple pie.
ADMIRAL
Oh!
They laugh and start to walk out of the room while the Admiral pats Buzz on the back.
ADMIRAL (CONT'D)
That I can do, Buzz. That I can do.
