TITLE: Behavior Program and Placement Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Behavior

JOB SUMMARY: This position will work with canine fosters, canine rescue partners, and assist with pathway planning duties and behavior modification plans for canines with behavioral challenges. The Behavior Program and Placement Coordinator will assess dogs with behavior challenges, create behavior modification plans for dogs in foster homes and in care at YWAC. They will also recruit, train, and retain canine foster volunteers, match dogs to appropriate foster or rescue partners, maintain accurate and timely records.

This position is supervised by: Manager of Behavior Programs

• You are a patient and supportive mentor to our foster parents who connect with you and trust you

• You love working with others and your co-workers can’t stand the thought of working on a day you aren’t there

• You’re open to new ideas, comfortable with change, and endlessly optimistic

• You can follow directions, but aren’t afraid to ask for help when you are out of your comfort zone

• You excel at finding creative solutions that make everyone happy, even in challenging or delicate situations

• You are familiar with positive reinforcement training techniques and have experience creating and implementing behavior modification plans

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:

Behavior/Animal Care:

• Work with the behavior team to identify animals in need of and appropriate for the canine foster program or rescue

• Assist behavior team in creating and executing behavior plans for dogs awaiting foster

• Coordinate the placement of animals in-need into appropriate foster homes and rescues

• Report the need of veterinary intervention of sick or injured animals

• Provide basic medical care as instructed by medical department

Administrative & Foster Support:

• Recruit canine foster parents with special emphasis on dog-savvy individuals who can and are excited to help dogs with special behavioral and medical needs

• Provide training to new foster volunteers

• Ensure that records are entered and maintained accurately and in a timely manner

• Schedule and coordinate foster appointments for medical, spay/neuter and animals returning for adoption

• Provide friendly and helpful instruction to foster volunteers on how to address common medical and behavioral concerns

• Prepare and provide animal care and/or supplies for foster volunteers

• Prescribe medications for and monitor dogs who need behavior intervention through medication

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Required

a. High school diploma or equivalent

b. Minimum 2 years professional experience with dogs including designing and implementing behavior modification plans

c. Minimum 2 years customer service experience

d. Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment

e. Computer skills (Microsoft Office, scheduling software, data entry)

f. Certification as an expert in animal behavior through a reputable university or nationally recognized organization (CPDT, CCPDT, CAAB, ABS, AABS) or ability to obtain certification within 3 years of hire

g. Fear Free Shelter Certified or ability to complete certification within 90 days of hire

h. Willingness to become certified in humane euthanasia

2. Preferred

a. Fear Free Animal Trainer Certificate

b. Experience counseling members of the general public on dog behavior

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at shelter or on-location for various activities

• Equipment use:

o Includes use of PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and cleaning equipment and supplies.

• Work hours:

o Work hours will vary

o This position will be regularly scheduled with Sunday and Monday off, but is subject to change

o Evening, weekend and holiday hours will be required

• Regular exposure to animals and their bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, bites, and scratches.

• Heavy lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds with assistance

• Regular upright movement, such as standing or walking

• Working independently, with minimal supervision

• Working in this field requires the development of self-care skills to combat compassion fatigue

• Wearing a safety belt and using safety equipment in emergencies including air horn, break stick, pet corrector, etc.
