Travel Study to China

May 6-20, 2007

Please join us in a travel study experience to China led by Professors Tom Douglas of the School of Business and Tom Lavallee of the College of Arts and Sciences. Students will travel to Shanghai, Suzhou and Xiamen to visit US and local Chinese businesses as well as cultural sites to learn about the economic, cultural, political, and human resource issues of global businesses. The faculty and students of the School of International Trade at Xiamen University will be SIUE’s hosts during the group’s stay in Xiamen. Xiamen is a growing, business-minded community served by one of the largest ports in China. The interaction with the students from Xiamen University will give the SIUE students an opportunity to explore what university life is like in China and how Chinese students prepare for their careers in business.

Students who are part of this travel study will enroll for a three-credit-hour course, GBA 489, and will meet every Friday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm starting on March 16, 2007 until April 27, 2007. Preparation for the travel to China will include learning Chinese language, culture, history, politics and business practices. This preparation, combined with field experiences in Shanghai, Suzhou and Xiamen, will broaden students’ knowledge and challenge preconceptions about doing business in China. Participation in the weekly meetings is required. Attendance and participation in the weekly meetings in the spring semester will account for at least 25 % of your course grade.

The travel fee for students is $2900 and covers transportation, visas, lodging, tour admissions, and one meal a day. Students will stay in double rooms. In addition to this fee, students will pay tuition, but not fees, for a three-credit-hour course, GBA 489. Need-based financial aid to support study abroad is available through the Financial Aid Office.

The School of Business Travel Study to China will be May 6-20, 2007.
