Travel Study to Germany --- March 2 – 11, 2007

(Spring Break 2007)

This travel study will take SIUE students to two main cities in Germany to learn first hand about the business and culture in Northern Germany. Our first stop in Europe will be at the base of operations in Hannover, Germany. We will visit the Fachhochschule Hannover (FHH), one of our exchange-partner institutions. For the last three days of the trip, we will head to Berlin, the old and new capital of the united Germany.

Hannover, which is more than 750 years old, lies on the border between the middle German mountains and hills and the northern German flatland. It was designated in 1946 as the capital of state of Lower Saxony and has become the political, economic, and cultural center of the state. The city currently has more than 500,000 inhabitants. This large modern city is internationally recognized for its fairs and exhibitions as well as for hosting EXPO 2000.

Berlin is an international metropolis with a turbulent historic past. Being at the crossroads of East and West, it was the capital of Germany until the end of World War II. A city divided by the Wall until 1989, major sights today chronicle Berlin’s past as a city ruled by the Nazis under Hitler, and then subsequently as a satellite state of the former Eastern Bloc. Attractions include the government district on the Spree river, the Reichstag (Parliament Building), the Brandenburg Gate, the Museum Island, and remnants of the Wall.

Students participating in this travel study will enroll in GBA 489-GER for three credit hours. Participants will have five meetings in Spring 2007 to prepare for this trip by studying elementary German, culture, history, politics and business practices. This preparation, combined with field experiences in Germany, will broaden students’ knowledge and challenge pre-conceptions about doing business in Germany.

The cost will be about $1,650 for SIUE students. This fee includes all transportation, lodging, some tour admissions, and some meals. Currently, the lodging estimate is based upon double occupancy. In addition, students will pay tuition but not fees for a three-credit-hour course. Need-based financial aid to support study abroad is available through the Financial Aid Office. In addition, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs is committed to providing a small grant to help cover the expenses of every SIUE student who is accepted for a study-abroad program. Requests for this assistance are processed through the Office of International Programs in the School of Business, which also offers Competitive Travel Awards to help defray transportation costs.

The application is due by Monday, October 16, 2006, together with a deposit check of $500. In case there are more applicants than can be accommodated, applicants may be invited for a selection interview. Those applicants not selected for the trip will receive their deposits back. Preference will be given to business students with junior/senior status. Accepted students who do not currently hold a passport should apply immediately upon being accepted. Beyond the $500 deposit, a second payment of $500 is due by December 8, 2006 with the balance of $650 due by February 1, 2007. In the event a participant must cancel at any point, airfare and some other expenditure will be nonrefundable. All checks should be made payable to SIUE and turned in to Cyndi Peterson.

Plans for the trip will be finalized shortly before departure. We are working closely with our German counterparts at FHH to determine the best experience for all on the study tour.
