A book with one author:

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. Title. Publishing City: Publishing Company, Year Published.

Example: Ambrose, Stephen E. Undaunted Curage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. Chicago: MacMillan, 1988.

An encyclopedia article:

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. “Article Title.” Encyclopedia Name. Year Published.

Example: Bates, William. “Angelou, Maya.” The World Book Encyclopedia. 1995 ed.

An article from a printed magazine (not on the Internet):

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. “Article Title.” Magazine Name. Date Published.

Example: Cain, William. “Big Business in the Nineties.” Business Week.

Internet Resources:

Article from an online magazine, newspaper, or journal:

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. “Article Title.” Magazine Name. Date Published. Date Found Online. Website Address.

Example: Sklaroff, Sara. “E-mail Nation.” U.S. News Online.

Science Fair Variables

Your independent variable is what you decide to change in your experiment to see how it affects your results.

For example, if you wanted to see which detergent removed stains the best, your independent variable would be the brand of detergent.

You should only have ONE independent variable in your experiment. If you change more than one thing, you will not know which change is causing the results.

My independent variable is: __________________________________________

Your dependent variable is what changed because of your independent variable.

For example, if you watered Plant Edna every day and Plant Margo once a week, your independent variable would be how often you water the plants and your dependent variable would be plant growth (how tall each plant grows).

Your dependent variables give you your results. You may have more than one if your independent variable causes more than one change. (For example, another dependent variable in the plant experiment might be soil wetness.)

My dependent variable(s) is/are: ____________________________________ ______________________________________________

Your constants are what you are keeping the same throughout your experiment.

For example, if you wanted to see which type of paper airplane flies the furthest…

- your independent variable would be paper airplane design,

- your dependent variable would be flight distance

- your constants would include where you stand when you fly the planes, who is flying the planes, plane launch angle, type of paper used to make the planes, etc.

You will probably have many constants in your experiment.

My constants are: __________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

5 = All three variables, including constants are included and correct.

4 = Variables and constants are included, but all of the information correct.

3 =Two portions are incorrect.

2 = Three portions are incorrect

1 = Missing information or I most of the information is incorrect.

Science Fair Materials

The materials I need to perform my science fair experiment are:

1. ___________________________________________________________

2. ___________________________________________________________

3. ___________________________________________________________

4. ___________________________________________________________

5. ___________________________________________________________

6. ___________________________________________________________

7. ___________________________________________________________

Before handing in your Science Fair Materials List, please make sure that it meets the following criteria.

• My materials list includes all materials that I need

• My material list is detailed: it includes amounts of each materials, sizes, and brands, where appropriate

*** Even if you are working in a group, every scientist is responsible for handing in this sheet individually***

Science Fair Procedure

The procedure must be in enough detail so that it is reproducible (someone else will get the same results). Have a parent/guardian proof read it.

10 ________________________________________________________________

• My procedure list is thorough: someone else could perform my experiment and get the same results by following the steps I have listed in the procedure

• The procedure is written in my own words, and in complete sentences.

Attach another sheet if additional room is needed.

Materials & Procedures

The MATERIAL list is detailed and includes the following information:

the amounts of each material, sizes, and brands, where appropriate. (Seventh & Eighth Grade- measure materials in metric.)

Everything is written in complete sentences, with proper spelling & grammar. The procedure is reproducible, meaning that someone else could perform my experiment & get the same results by following the steps you have listed.

8 Two small mistakes that doesn’t interfere with understanding the material list or procedure.

7 Three or Four small mistakes, including spelling and/ or grammar.

6 Enough mistakes that it interferes with understanding how to follow the procedures or understanding the materials.
