If you have been feeling depressed, it may be worth taking a look at what you eat. While the topic isn't one psychiatrists and therapists often ask about, a growing body of research show that a healthy diet -- high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish and unprocessed lean red meat--can prevent depression. And an unhealthy -- high in processed and refined foods -- can increase your risk for the disease.

Further, recent studies show that a healthy diet also could affectively treat depression even after it has started. The findings are spurning the rise of nutritional psychiatry. The annual American Psychiatric Association conference has started including presentations on nutrition and psychiatry, including one last year by chef David Bouley on foods that support the peripheral nervous system.

Some medical schools, including Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, are beginning to teach psychiatry residents about the importance of diet on mental health. Depression has many causes -- it may be genetic, triggered by a specific event or situation, such as loneliness, or brought on by lifestyle choices. But it's really about an unhealthy brain, and too often people forget this.

When we think of cardiac health, we think of strengthening an organ, the heart, says Drew Ramsey, a psychiatrist in New York, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia and author of "Eat Complete."

"We need to start thinking of strengthening another organ, the brain, when we think of mental health."

Others are skeptical. A practicing psychiatrist who requested anonymity called the movement a fad. "Later studies will expose flaws in the research they are irresponsibly citing. Patients will have been hurt in the meantime," he says.

WASHIGNTON--When news of an enormous Facebook breach broke, Chris Wellens couldn't help feeling a little smug. After all, nearly all the information the technology executive had given the social media giant was false.

While Ms. Welens does use her real name on Facebook, she lies about nearly everything else: "It says that I graduated from Trinity College in Dublin. I've never been to Ireland. It says my undergraduate degree is in gymnastics. Anyone who knows me knows that is laughable, because I'm not very physically flexible."

Ms. Wellens, who is 65, put 1910 as her birth year with the idea that advertisers don't tend to bother with people more than 90-years-old. The result? She sees a lot of ads for slippers.

Facebook says authenticity is key to the social network and rigorously policed, and that false information violates the terms of service agreement.

"Each day, we block millions of fake accounts at registration," says a Facebook Inc. spokeswoman--who declined to be named. "Our systems examine thousands of account attributes and focus on detecting behaviours that are very difficult for bad actors to fake, including their connections to others on our platform."

Dan Hastings, a software engineer in Ireland, says he almost lost decade of gaming history and thousands of euros of purchases when he was locked out of the Sony PlayStation Network after forgetting his fake birth date. He first called customer service, to no avail.

Then Hastings discovered a loophole -- tweaking the recovery website address to leapfrog the birthday question. His post explaining the process is one of the most popular on his gaming site.

Sony PlayStation didn't respond to a request for comment.
