Historical data in the MT4 platform

In this guide, we will show how to upload the historical data for the long-term analysis of underlying instrument. Such analysis can be an important part of the analysis for all traders irrespective of the favourite trading instrument. The MT4 can support the data from 1970 onwards, which allows observing the main economic events and analysing the market reactions over time.

Data adjustments

Before uploading the data, you should adjust and save it in the .csv format. The historical data file should have seven columns: date (YYYY.MM.DD format), time (HH:MM), open price, high price, low price, close price, total volume. It would be preferable to remove the header of the table, so that there will be no need in selecting the specific data upload range within MT4 environment.

Upload Instruction

First, start your MT4 and select the "Tools" from the top menu, then click on the "History Center".

In this example, we are going to upload the data for Dow Jones Industrial Index. The history menu is going to appear. This menu displays the range of Symbol groups. DJIA is inside of "CFDs" instruments group. Then you should select DJIA itself (US30 on Key to Markets MT4 platform).

After you select the data instrument, you should look for the period you intend to analyse. We are going to focus on daily performance of the index. Click on Daily and you are able to scroll through the entries already uploaded into your system.

Click on "Import" to upload your data file. On the import screen, you may select the path to your data using "Browse..." button.

After you select the file, you are able to choose whether you would like to upload the entire data range or only selection of it. Make sure you select the right range for your upload. When you are ready to finalize the process, click "OK". Now you may use your data for the analysis.

PLEASE, MAKE SURE THAT YOU UPLOAD THE DATA FOR THE CORRECT INSTRUMENT (ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO CFDs). THE UPLOAD OF WRONG DATA OR DATA FOR AN INCORRECT INSTRUMENT MAY IMPEDE YOUR AMALYSIS AND ITS PUTCOMES.
