Teacher Work Sample, Task 1

Introduction

During Demonstration Teaching, I was placed in Lionville Middle School, which is located in Exton, Pa which is in Chester County. Chester County is located about 40 miles west of Philadelphia, Pa. Within this school district, there is a population of around 67,500 people. The district is primarily Caucasian (91.3%), followed by Asian (5.2%) and Black or African American (3.5%). Approximately 82.3% of Chester County adults have a high school diploma or higher education. The median household income is $98,335. The unemployment rate is only 3.1%, which is well below the national average. There are 2.6% of Chester County families and people with income below the poverty level. Downingtown Area School District is a very prestigious school district that always scores very high on their state exams. Because of this, home values are much higher than surrounding communities. The median home value is $380,500. The community is highly supportive of their schools and parents are very involved in the education process. (1)

Lionville Middle School is one of the two middle schools in the Downingtown School District. The school district boasts a 14:1 student-teacher ratio. The host teacher I was placed with, Jen Moyer, teaches four pre-algebra courses and one algebra course. Students in her classes range from 11 to 13 years old. Their years of birth are 2002 through 2004.

General Information

Each math class is exactly 48 minutes long and occurs every day of a six day cycle. Every student in the middle school takes either pre-algebra, algebra, or algebra II. Students whom need extra help in math have “math extensions” on their schedules. These extra help courses meet anywhere from one to six times per week on top of their regular math course.

The classroom consists of 32 desks, represented below.

Contextual Factor

The geographic location affects the community, district, and school in many different ways. Because the Downingtown Area School district is in a very affluent area, students’ schooling reflects that. The average household income is very high in Chester County, so the majority of students stay in the area for the duration of their education. Many generations of families still live in the county, so families recognize school employees. In the same aspect, teachers and administration seem to work within the district for the entirety of their careers. The students are able to see their teachers from previous years and know the teachers that they can possibly have in their future. The only negative impact that the geographic location gives the community is the climate of Chester County, Pa. Chester County, Pa has all types of weather extremes throughout the year. It is not unlikely that temperatures will range anywhere from -10 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter to 100 degrees in the summer. Because of these weather conditions, schools in Chester County always have weather related closings. Even though the weather issues may be a hassle, the community responds appropriately and always has a backup plan. Chester County’s weather also intrigues people to move to the area, so the weather is also a contributor to the average home price.

In addition to having a positive impact on the community, the geographic location of Chester County also positively impacts the district. The Downingtown Area School District has a very high budget compared to many districts, so they are able to pay more for better educated teachers and professionals. The average Chester County teacher salary is much higher than surrounding counties, so the school district always has great options of professionals to choose from when hiring. The geographic location of Chester County is so blended and developed, and the district reflects this. The county is very established and its schools are also.

Lastly, the geographic location affects each individual school in a positive way. Chester County’s location gives each school a diverse experience that positively affects the students. The location is between Philadelphia, a very large city, and very rural central Pa, which gives students diversity. Majority of the students’ families are middle class and it reflects in their hard-working attitude. Also, their home life greatly influences their success in school. Families provide their children with internet access which allows the students to further progress their schooling.

Technology Availability

Downingtown Area School District boasts that they are the only school district in Pennsylvania to have a 1:1 student to technology ratio. This means that the school district provides every student with an iPad during their sixth grade year. The iPads are now on their third year of use in the school district and every teacher that I have spoken with really enjoys the technology. The only downside of the technology would be the distraction that it causes some students. They have easy access to a world of games and educational, interruptive applications. Many teachers believe, as do I, that it prepares children for their futures. Every job now uses some type of technology, and children are becoming more accustomed to using technology throughout their education.

Learning Needs

Mrs. Moyer teaches a period of pre-algebra that is a level II course. The school district decided that this course was a lower level because of the students’ test scores. The majority of these students have IEPs or 504s. In order to accommodate this, the district provides Mrs. Moyer with a teacher aid in order to assist in the classroom. Mrs. Moyer expects to keep pace with her other pre-algebra courses, but is also flexible with adding additional time when the level II course needs.

There is a student in her accelerated Algebra class that is hearing impaired and has cochlear implants. The student is instructed to bring a microphone “necklace” to all her courses. She gives each teacher the microphone that they must wear during lectures in the classroom. The student is also allowed to sit in the front of the classroom with her right ear closest to instruction. Teachers are also always expected to ask the student if she can hear properly or if she needs any further clarifications.
