Downloading Overdrive Books for Kindle

To view eBooks for the Kindle, click on "Advanced Search" which is at the bottom of the “Quick Search” box located on the right-hand side (below the “Getting Started” box).

Once you are on the Advanced Search webpage, go to "Format" and click on the drop-down arrow and select "Kindle Book" and then click on the 'Search' button.

A list of eBooks available for the Kindle will be displayed with either ‘Kindle devices via USB only’ (which means that the eBook must be downloaded onto your computer and then transferred to the Kindle via USB) or ‘Kindles and free Kindle apps’ (which allows downloading the eBook directly to the Kindle minus the transfer). Under the eBook title that you're interested in, select "Add/View Selection" in the blue box, which is below the title, and to the right of "Kindle Book" in the blue box.

Once the selection has been added, you will be taken to “My digital cart." Next, click “Proceed to checkout.” Please note that in some cases, you may see "Place a Hold" instead of "Add/View Selection," which means that the eBook is checked out to another customer and you may place a request/hold on the eBook. At the Check Out screen, enter your Queens Library card number and PIN and then click on "Login." Next, click “Confirm Check Out” and the digital book(s) will be checked out to you.

For ‘Kindles and free Kindle apps’ eBooks

You will then have the option to download the eBook by clicking on “Get for Kindle” and will be redirected to the Amazon website, where you will need to sign in to your Amazon account as well as have your Kindle and/or Kindle reading app registered with Amazon in order to download the eBook.

Once you are logged into your Amazon account and the Kindle device or Kindle reading app is selected and registered, click the yellow 'Get library book' button in the green box and the ebook will be downloaded to your Kindle if you have a wi-fi connection and checked out a ‘Kindles and free Kindle apps’ eBook .

For ‘Kindle devices via USB only’ eBooks:

If you do not have a wi-fi connection and/or you have checked out a “Kindle devices via USB only” eBook, this eBook will need to be downloaded to your pc, and then you will need to transfer the eBook to your Kindle via USB. Once you are re-directed to the Amazon website and logged in to your Amazon account, click on the yellow “Get library book” button with the “Deliver to Transfer via Computer” option selected. You will then be prompted to choose the Kindle that the eBook will be transferred to via USB, select the Kindle and then click on ‘Continue.” Next, a pop-up box will prompt you to open or save the file immediately, select “Save File” then click ’OK.’ Then, connect the Kindle to your computer via USB. Next, copy the downloaded file on your computer to the "documents" folder of your Kindle. The eBook should appear on your Kindle home screen. Please note that the “Deliver to Transfer via Computer” eBooks may not be accessed on Kindle reading applications. Due to publisher restrictions, these eBook titles may not be wirelessly delivered directly to your device and instead require USB transfer from your computer to your device.

For all Kindle eBooks, the lending period is usually 21 days, but customers can select a shorter loan period at the “Confirm Check Out” screen.  Digital books are automatically returned when the lending period is over. You may end your Library Loan early by visiting "Manage Your Kindle" page and next to the book, click on "Actions" and choosing "Return This Book".
