Code: ELA6CMS19Class Description: This language arts class is designed to increase communications skills through reading, writing, speaking, and the study of the English language. This year you can expect to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction including novels, short stories, dramas, poetry, and essays. These writing pieces will model the different writing styles we will be working on ourselves. Writing assignments will include timed responses, journal writing, essays, critiques, and creative pieces. Because we are a community of learners, please also expect to work periodically in group situations. Please understand that at-home reading is expected and is a component of our course.Required Materials: 1” Binder or 4-3 Prong Folder (Student will need a folder for each module we cover.)Composition BookNotebook PaperWriting UtensilsStudent Journal and Novel EVERY DAYClassroom ExpectationsBe ready to learn something new every day!Be respectful to yourself, your classmates, personal and others property, and the process of education.Try your best and NEVER give up.ClassworkAll classwork assignments can be found in Student journal unless a handout was provided. Random Book checks will be completed to grade work. HomeworkHomework will be assigned everyday unless announced. If an assignment is not issued, please know that you are to read your novel every night. Assignments will consist of skill practice and completing any classwork that was not finished during the class period. It will be graded for accuracy. AbsencesWhen you return from an absence, it is your responsibility to make up the work you missed. ALWAYS copy down missed assignments from the assignment board or from one of your classmates. Make sure you write (ABSENT) on the days you were gone. Turn in assignments that were due into the appropriate late/absent drawer. Incentive Policy: Scholars that are observed doing something above and beyond theclassroom expectations will receive Class Dojo points. These can be redeemed for certainprizes. At the end of the Nine Weeks, students will receive a prize at the teacher discretion. Progressive Discipline Plan: Step One: Verbal warning to student about misbehavior.Step Two: One-on-One conference/conversation IN THE HALL with student to seek out possible personal issues or simply redirectStep Three: Move student to “Start Desk”. This desk is located near the classroom door to give the student the opportunity to “START” over. Step Four: Referral (write up) and escorted from class. Instant Referral: Fighting, Bullying, Assault, Making Threats, Cursing, Destruction of Property or Lewd behavior.Grading: The district’s grading scale is as follows:A: 93-100B: 85-92C: 75-82D: 70-74F: Below 70Extra Credit: I understand students’ do not always perform well. With that and them being successful as my priority, students will have TWO extra credit opportunities per quarter. To earn extra credit, students must complete the assignment and turn it in by the due date. LATE EXTRA CREDIT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!Cell Phones/Electronics: The use of cell phones or other electronic devices in class is strictly prohibited. They are to be powered off and put away in the student's’ backpack or locker from 7:15-2:15. If an electronic is seen in the classroom, the device will be collected and turned into administration.
