Installing and Authorizing ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5.1 Using an EVA Authorization Number

Quick Start Guide:

System Requirements:

STEP ONE: Obtain an EVA Authorization Code (12 digit code which begins with EVA)

Authorization codes are available to registered members of Trent University from Trent University Library Maps, Data, & Government Information Centre (MaDGIC). Codes are valid for 365 days from registration, on one computer. Registered members of Trent University are entitled to ONE code per year, for teaching and course work.

To obtain a code see:

STEP TWO: Regarding older versions of software:

If you do not currently have an earlier version of ArcGIS installed on your machine, proceed to Step 2.

If you have ArcGIS version 10.1 or later installed, you do not need to uninstall it before installing version 10.5.1; the ArcGIS setup package will detect and upgrade your ArcGIS for Desktop software. If you have ArcGIS version 10.0 or earlier installed, please uninstall it.

STEP THREE: Verify Install Prerequisites

? Microsoft .NET Framework requirement:

NET Framework 4.5 or higher must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS for Desktop (NET Framework comes with Windows, only older machines may require an upgrade. In most cases the installation process will prompt you before starting, if it fails to detect this requirement.)

? Browser requirement:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (minimum IE 9) must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS for Desktop. Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11 are supported.

? Python requirement for geoprocessing:

ArcGIS for Desktop geoprocessing tools require Python 2.7.13 and Numerical Python 1.9.3 to be installed. If the ArcGIS for Desktop setup does not find either Python 2.7.13 or Numerical Python (NumPy) 1.9.3 installed on the target computer, Python 2.7.13 and Numerical Python 1.9.3 will be installed during a complete installation of ArcGIS for Desktop. You can choose a Custom installation to unselect the Python feature and avoid installing it. Additionally, if the Python setup is executed during the ArcGIS for Desktop installation, you will be provided with the opportunity to choose its installation location. The Python installation location should not include spaces.

STEP FOUR: Register Software License Code and Download Software

A. Visit EducationEdition and login with your Global Esri Account or sign-up for your account if you don't already have one.

B. Enter your EVA Authorization Number (12 digit code obtained from Trent Library Maps, Data & Government Information Centre) and select "Activate ArcGIS".

C. On the next screen you are able to select the version of ArcGIS for Desktop that you wish to download. We recommend that you select the latest version, ArcGIS 10.5.1 for Desktop.

After selecting a version to download you will be presented with multiple file download options. These files are multiple components of two different software products: ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Pro is a relatively new product and you are fully entitled to download and install it. However it is licensed separately from ArcGIS for Desktop and you will need to contact madgichelp@trentu.ca to request access.

To download ArcGIS for Desktop software, click the Download button next to "ArcGIS for Desktop". This is the base software and is all you need to install and run the program. Other software components in the directory are optional, and can be downloaded and installed now or later as required. If you choose to install other software components they must be installed one at a time, and AFTER the base software is installed. See Table 1 below for a description of each file.

STEP FIVE: Software Installation

Run "ArcGIS_Desktop_1051_XXXXX.exe" downloaded in Step 3 and follow the steps as prompted by the ArcGIS Installation Wizard. During this process:

o When prompted, select ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced Single Use.

o When prompted, accept the default, I do not wish to authorize any extensions at this time. The extensions will be authorized automatically.

o When prompted, enter your EVA Authorization Number (12 digit number provided by Trent MaDGIC).

STEP SIX: Turn on ArcGIS for Desktop Extensions

Once software is installed and authorized, you will need to activate the extensions you wish to use. To do this: On your computer, go to Windows "All Programs" > ArcGIS> ArcMap 10.5.1 > Customize > "Extensions" and check the extensions you require.

The installation process is complete! To test drive: Go to> All Programs> ArcGIS> ArcMap 10.5.1

Trouble Shooting Authorizations:

Should the authorization fail to launch automatically (after you have installed software successfully), proceed as follow:

On your computer, Go to > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator > Click on "Desktop" > Select the "Advance (ArcInfo) Single Use "Authorize Now". Enter your Authorization Number and complete the steps as prompted by the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Your Authorization number can be activated on one machine only and will expire 365-days after registration. If during the 365 days you need to reformat or upgrade your machine, you must deauthorize the license BEFORE removing ArcGIS for Desktop software or activating on another machine.

To do this: Access your Programs menu and browse to ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator. Highlight 'Desktop' in the left pane, ensure that 'Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use' is selected, and click the 'Deauthorize' button. Follow the instructions in the de-authorization wizard to complete the process.
