Comments? Suggestions? Afletcher849@Good morning SIU Faculty:Over the past three months, we have applied several new security policies to improve our cybersecurity defenses. The most recent of these changes is the requirement that everyone using a “legacy” email system move to a more modern, “trusted” email client. This is a security best practice, and an upcoming requirement being put in place by Microsoft. The Office of Information Technology began enforcing this requirement for staff during the month of March. Rather than running the risk of a potential disruption to faculty, this same transition, to a “trusted” email client, will occur for faculty on May 13th, after the completion of the semester. Below, we would like to share some lessons learned during the staff transition to prepare faculty. Our intention is to make your move to a trusted email client (if necessary) uneventful.?If you are already using a current version of Outlook 2016 or newer (such as Outlook365) on your work or personal device, you need do nothing. If not, you will need to move to one of SIU’s trusted email methods as soon as possible. These methods include?Outlook 2016 or newer, Office.siu.edu, the Outlook app on Android-based devices, or Apple Mail or the Outlook app on iOS devices. ?If you need assistance determining if you are using a trusted email method or need help moving to one of those listed above, reach out to your Desktop Support person or SalukiTech for assistance. The following are lessons learned that may help you if you need to make this change.General IssuesAfter SIU moved to multi-factor authentication (MFA) earlier this year, all SIU users are both prompted and required to validate their credentials approximately once each week using MFA. If you have not been required to do this, your email client may not be set up correctly. To resolve this issue, visit our Technology Knowledgebase; in the Blocked Email SOLUTION there are instructions to remove and re-add a trusted email client to your account.? Similarly, if you have added Outlook to an email consolidator—a tool that allows you to access emails from several email clients and/or accounts—Outlook will not work. Download the Outlook app to access your SIU email.Mobile Device IssuesIf you have issues on a mobile device, the solution will be slightly different on each device:If you are using an Android-based phone/device, you will need to download the Outlook Mobile app; the Android stock application will not work. If you experience issues with your iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device, you can download and use the Outlook app. You can also use Apple Mail; however, you may need to reinstall it. To do this: Delete your @siu.edu account.Go to your device Settings then Mail>Accounts>Delete Account.Add your @siu.edu account: device Settings>Mail>Accounts>Add Account.Select Microsoft Exchange. Enter your @siu.edu email address. When prompted, select “sign in.” Do not select “configure manually.”Enter your username (email address) and password. And again, if you have the appropriate app downloaded, you should be prompted weekly to use MFA.As noted above, if you are currently using or move to one of the recognized email clients, you should not experience any change in your email. Nonetheless, the OIT recommends that you monitor your email on and shortly after May 13th; if you notice unusual behavior or lose access to your SIU email or calendar, verify that you are using a recognized email client (listed above). You can instead, speak with your Desktop Support person or contact SalukiTech at (618) 453-5155 or?salukitech@siu.edu. ................
