Praise Song Words - Adventist CIRCLE

The following play is titled “We Shall See Our Lord a-Coming.” Watch an archived video of this program on the Campion church website for March 1, 2014. This play is an hour long, and is written for a church service. The entire student body, from grades PreK-8 will conduct the entire church service. The play is written to go with the 7th-8th grade Pathways reading book, “Heartwarming Stories of our Adventist Pioneers” by Norma Collins. This play should be performed in conjunction of the students reading the book; without the students reading the book, the entire purpose and mission of the play will be missed. I give permission for schools to use this play and change it to fit your needs, but my only request is that each student will read the book in entirety, with class discussion and journal reflections, just prior to performing this play. Jodie AakkoStage Design: nothing. Or you can make it look like Ascension Rock if you want to, with a gray sheet and some plants—but that’s basically not necessary.Costumes:PreK-6 Students, Teacher, Student 1, Student 2, Student 3: regular black and white church clothesHistorical Characters (such as James White etc.): throw on small clothing articles on top of their regular black and white church clothes, such as a top hat, glasses (rims only), suspenders, bow tie, suit jacket, sailor cap (Joseph Bates), etc. Ellen White can wear gloves, ladies’ colonial hat/bonnet, purse, white ruffled long sleeve shirt. This year I have mostly female students and girls played the parts of the men just fine by putting their hair up.Advent Singers: I used four church volunteers who sang in four-part harmony. These Advent Singers lead the congregation in the songs, and after the program the congregation told me that they particularly enjoyed singing those old songs. If you have time, you can use extra students lead this part. These singers can dress in 1800’s clothing, or just regular church attire.School Choir: This program includes the entire student body, grades PreK-8 singing as a mass choir “You Will See Your Lord a-Coming.” Have your music teacher create a special version of the song, such as the young students singing verse 1 a cappella, all students sing verses 2-3, then an organ interlude, then congregation join on the last verses.Violins and Bells: This program has the school bell choir playing the offertory, and the school violinists playing when the little children come up for children’s story and when the little children return to their seats after children’s story.Praise Team: This program includes 7th/8th grade students leading the praise song as the song service. The students can use percussion, etc. Select any song.Printed Program: Our program included a current picture of Ascension Rock, copies of each of the songs including the notes, as well as a paragraph stating the purpose and the mission of the play, a list of characters, and the main part that looks like the “church bulletin” part of the church service listing the order of the service and who does what. Remember, each year Advent Source provides free church bulletin inserts for “Education Sabbath”—order these for this Sabbath if you like. and Video: This part of the program is crucially essential and is written in the text boxes of the script.5048250436880Praise Song Words“Song Title”00Praise Song Words“Song Title”7th/8th Grade Praise Team Song ServiceGrades 7/8 and School Music Teacher are on the platform Very short welcome by one of the students before the song Song #1 “Sweet By and By”3886200314325Opening Prayer, Grades 1-300Opening Prayer, Grades 1-3Opening Prayer (Grades 1-3 Students in a line)Each student can give a single line request “My prayer is for…” Music Teacher: Before we move into the next part of our worship service, the 7th and 8th grade students have to step out now quickly to leave for their field trip to New York, to Ascension Rock, where some Millerites waited for Christ’s return on October 22, 1844. Ascension Rock in New York. This is what we have been reading about in the book we brought along with us.Student #1: Yep, it is a rock.Student #2: Not just any rock! This is the rock on William Miller’s Farm in New York, where many people gathered on October 22, 1844.Teacher: That’s right. Many of William Miller’s friends gathered here from sun up to midnight, staring at the sky, hoping to see a small cloud come from the east. Actually, there were thousands, perhaps even a hundred thousand Millerites who were watching the sky that night, all across the country. 1844, remember, that’s about 60 years before automobiles, 17 years before the Civil War, and the US had only 25 states, it was nothing but horse and buggy. Wow….. just imagine them sitting here, singing and praying all day long, singing that old Millerite favorite hymn about never parting again…Student #2: Yes, I can just imagine that song right now, too…32099259525Congregation please join. Music was very important to them, not just during worship but throughout the week.Student #2: I can’t imagine how sad it was for them on that day. They had faith that they would see Jesus coming, and they would meet Jesus, and their guardian angel, they would be reunited with their dead loved ones on that day! Imagine mothers believing they would hold their little baby again on that day… families were going to be together again…Student #3: Remember reading about William Miller in our book? I am William Miller. I once gave up on religion. In fact, for twelve years I was a deist, and I spent my time working as a sheriff, a politician, and I was an officer in the War of 1812, and I was the Justice of the Peace. But out of curiosity, I began to study the Bible, especially the prophecies. I studied day and night, and I realized that God is a loving God, and that his second coming was very soon. Based on the Daniel prophecy of 2300 days, I believed God would return in 1843 or 1844, which was in 25 years, but for 13 years I was too shy to preach the message, but I finally listened to the Holy Spirit, and I preached the “Second Advent of Christ”, for the next 12 years. Many friends helped me, including Himes who helped me print “Signs of the Times.” My favorite Bible verse is “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” In those 12 years, I preached 4,500 sermons to at least 500,000 people, to tell others of my best friend, Jesus. Along the way, those who believed that Jesus was coming soon, became known as Millerites. I did not want to believe that we would know the exact day of His return, but a few weeks before October 22, I agreed that the Bible pointed to October 22. I was in my 60’s then, and I never stopped believing that our loving God was coming soon. My message to you, children, is to remember that God did not make a mistake by not coming on October 22. You can always trust Him. I did not stop trusting He would come soon. Someday soon, you will see the Lord a-coming.Teacher: What a great message he would have to tell us today! But you can’t talk about October 22, 1844 without remembering the rest of the story that we read about, especially Hiram Edson.Student #3: He was the one with the vision that helped us know what really happened on that sad Day.Student #1: Oh yeah, the vision in the cornfield. I can only imagine what it would be like to talk to someone who had a vision… What would he say to us?Teacher: Hiram Edson was a pilgrim of our church, just like the old Millerite song “I’m a Pilgrim” says…3724275113030Congregation please join(words to song)00Congregation please join(words to song)Song “I’m a Pilgrim” the first verse only366712557150Hiram Edson (and pic of him)(1806-1882)Age in 1844: 38Age in 1863: 5700Hiram Edson (and pic of him)(1806-1882)Age in 1844: 38Age in 1863: 57Hiram Edson: Hi students, I am so happy that I heard a Millerite sermon and believed that Jesus was coming soon. I remember October 22, I was 38 years old, I too had many friends at my farm house, somewhere else in New York. We were all so sad, there aren’t words to describe it. Most of us had sold everything, for a dime on the dollar, or had given everything away. Even our crops were forgotten, because we believed we did not have to get through the next winter. The next morning, I and my friend Crozier went to the barn to pray for courage and faith. God answered our prayer, right away. When I stepped out of the barn and began to walk through my cornfield, the Lord gave me a vision which showed that on October 22, 1844, our Father stepped into the Most Holy Place, to begin the Investigative Judgment. So the date was right after all; we were just wrong about the event. I wrote the vision and printed it and mailed it to every Millerite on my address list. My wife and I sold our wedding silver to pay for the printing. It was called “The Day Dawn” and it reached many people, including James White and Captain Joseph Bates. We three studied together several months later, and Captain Joseph Bates shared his belief with us that Saturday is the Sabbath. We studied that too, and soon we were printing this message far and wide. The message of the soon return of Christ, the seventh day Sabbath, and what really happened on October 22. The money ran out so I sold my farm to pay for the printing, and I bought a smaller farm, then I later sold that farm so that James White could buy a printing press. My message to you, children is to keep in your heart that Jesus is coming! Never stop believing! Someday soon, you will see your Lord a-comin’! Student #3: Our pioneers sacrificed everything for God’s work. Hiram Edson sold his farm, and the next farm, they even sold their wedding silver, to pay for evangelism out of their own pocket. How much do we sacrifice today, for tithe and offering?Offering Call by a grades 1-3 student(Bell Choir Plays for the Offertory)Teacher: Class, our book tells us Hiram Edson was not the only one generous with giving. How about Captain Joseph Bates?Student #2: Captain Bates? He saved up $10,000 as a captain, only to give it all to spread the news about the Sabbath! Student #1: $10,000 is a lot now, but that was back in 1818. That was a boat-load of money back then!Student #3: Even .25 cents was a lot back then. I remember reading that when Captain Bates served as a missionary in the South to the slaves, a slave wanted to buy the words to the song “I’m a Pilgrim.” That was probably that slave’s life savings! I’m glad the slave received the words for free.3895725520065Joseph Bates (and pic of him)(1792-1872)Age in 1844: 52Age in 1863: 7100Joseph Bates (and pic of him)(1792-1872)Age in 1844: 52Age in 1863: 71 Teacher: If you had to pick one name of who was the founder of the Seventh-day Adventist church, many would say it is Captain Joseph Bates. I bet he would have quite the story to tell us…Joseph Bates: Good Morning! I had spent my life as a sailor and a captain, but then I attended a Millerite meeting in 1843 when I was 50, and when I met with Hiram Edson and James White, I shared what I had studied about the Sabbath. After that, I was on the road preaching about the Sabbath, far more than I was ever at home. For some time, James White traveled and spoke with me, about the three angels’ message and the spirit of prophecy. When I first met Ellen White, I told her about the seventh-day Sabbath, and then God gave her a vision that I was telling the truth. I was convinced that her visions were from God because I witnessed her vision of the universe and she described the planets to me. I was the first preacher to preach in Battle Creek about the Sabbath; God had given me a dream of what the town would look like. Not only did I preach about the Sabbath; I preached about temperance, that means healthy choices. Even when I was still a captain, I would not allow my sailors to cuss or drink. My message to you today, children is ____________________. Someday soon you will see your Lord a-comin’!Teacher: I think one of my favorite stories about Joseph Bates was the story about the sack of flour. Children everywhere love to hear that story.346583053975Children’s Story by Grades 4-600Children’s Story by Grades 4-6Children’s Story (violins play while children walk up and then again when the children return to their seat)(Four students from Grades 4-6 will act out the story of the sack of flour, with their classroom teacher narrating. He also served as young Ellen Harmon’s assistant.Students: James White.Student #3: That’s an easy question. He would start his meetings with that song to get everyone’s attention, sometimes in a hall of almost a thousand people. And his favorite song is “You Will See Your Lord a-Comin’”Student #2: He was planning on being a teacher, but he gave up that career to be a preacher. Sometimes it was so dangerous to preach about the Sabbath, and some cities had rules against preaching about that because of the fanatics in that day. Someone threw a railroad spike at his head, a gang busted a church window out and threw snowballs at him, he was horsewhipped, and one time an angel saved him from a crowd.Teacher: And at the same time, some of James White’s meetings were so packed that people watched through the windows because there was no standing room left. Children especially enjoyed listening to James White.3743325272415James White (and pic of him)(1821-1881)Age in 1844: 23Age in 1853: 4200James White (and pic of him)(1821-1881)Age in 1844: 23Age in 1853: 42Student #2: Yes, even children our age. I wonder what he would say to us today.James White: Good morning, children! God had a wonderful plan for my life. It did not start out to well. I had seizures when I was two years old, and doctors thought I would die. But I got better, but my eyes were crossed so bad that I could not go to school and did not learn to read. Then when I was nineteen, my eyes were straight and I learned to read. I was a Millerite, and on October 22, 1844, I was only 23 years old, and that is when I studied with Hiram Edson and Captain Bates, and learned about the Sabbath and about what really happened in Heaven on that day. I continued preaching, and I soon met Ellen White when she was just 16. God chose her to be a prophet, and God gave her visions that she was to tell to everyone. So, I helped her travel to her appointments, to protect her, along with her sister and friends. After a year or so, we were married. I wrote “The Preset Truth” which later became the “Review and Herald.” For a long time, Ellen and I paid for all the printing, and the printing machine was in our house. Soon, some workers lived with us to help print the “Review and Herald,” but none of us received a salary. We ate only turnips and beans so that all the money could go to printing. Six years later, we moved the printing house from New York to Battle Creek, and had our own house, and I was paid $7 a week. I continued preaching and writing for the Review, and I was also the president of the General Conference twice. We moved from Michigan to California, and lived for a few summers in Black Hawk, here in the Colorado Mountains. God also led us to start the Pacific Press in California, and we helped start the Seventh-day Adventist schools. My message to you today, children, is take every opportunity you can to share the good news gospel with those around you. Soon, you will see your lord a-comin!Teacher: James White also helped plan the Dime Tabernacle in Battle Creek, which seated 3,000 people, and was built and paid for in one year. That is where his funeral was held. Class, who can tell me who the most translated female author of all time is?Student #2: Ellen White, James’ wife.3571875905510Ellen Harmon White (and pic of her)(1827-1915)Age in 1844: 16Age in 1963: 3500Ellen Harmon White (and pic of her)(1827-1915)Age in 1844: 16Age in 1963: 35Teacher: Correct, we read how she almost died when a rock hit her in the face when she was in third grade. Her family became Millerites, and she was only 17 on October 22, 1844. Soon after, God gave her a vision about what really happened on that date, and for the rest of her life, she travelled to speak to crowds and share the messages God had shared with her. If she were here today, I am sure she would have something very important to tell us…..Ellen White: Good morning, students. God told me that if we deliver the message faithfully and endure unto the end, we shall eat the fruit of the tree of life and drink of the water of life. God sent me many visions, starting at the age of 17, and some were even about Heaven, and some were about what is called the Great Controversy, which is the war that is going on between God and Satan. God instructed me to write about it, and that is what is written in the book called The Great Controversy, which is part of the Conflict of the Ages. God asked me to write many more books. During another vision, God gave me the strength to hold an eighteen pound Bible for thirty minutes, so others could learn about Christ. God also instructed me to share a message of good health. Even though God used me as His willing prophet, my books and my messages are not meant to replace God’s word. My message to you today, children is _________________. Soon, you will see your Lord a-comin’.Student #2: In Heaven, we will have eternity to speak with God’s people. I will have questions for Ellen White.3819525309880Uriah Smith (and pic of him)(1832-1903)Age in 1844: 12Age in 1863: 3100Uriah Smith (and pic of him)(1832-1903)Age in 1844: 12Age in 1863: 31Student #3: And what about Uriah Smith? I would guess he would have a lot to tell us.Uriah Smith: Students, I was only 12 on the Day of Disappointment, but I later heard James and Ellen White speak, and I began to write for the Adventist Review and became the editor, because I wanted to help spread the word of Jesus. I had patents on a special school desk, a fake leg with moveable joints, and 6 other patents, and the money from the patents helped send the Adventist Review to thousands of people. With careful Bible study, I wrote eighteen books, as well as hymns. I continued to work for the Review, and moved to Battle Creek when the press relocated there. The Review reached many of God’s people. Once, a boy sold his chicken so his friend could receive our magazine. Another time, two boys, ages 10 and 11, trapped gophers and walked eight miles to receive money for the pelts, and walked another eight miles to send all the money to the Review for a subscription. Although I was young when I began work for the Review, that was normal back then, because all the church workers were young, except Joseph Bates. My message to you today, children, is to live for Christ because there is nothing else more important. Soon, you will see your Lord a-comin’.Teacher: Uriah Smith worked his whole life for the Review, even when the Review was in James and Ellen White’s home. He worked faithfully at the Review until one day when he was aged, he died on the way walking to the Review to work. His funeral was held at the Dime Tabernacle, and his funeral was the largest since James White’s funeral. But one day, students, all God’s weary pilgrims will be home in Heaven, just as the old Adventist hymn says.461010057150Congregation please join.(words to song)00Congregation please join.(words to song)Song “How Sweet Are the Tidings” (Advent Singers return to seat when song is over)4400550457835JN Andrews (and pic of him)(1829-1883)Age in 1844: 15Age in 1863: 3400JN Andrews (and pic of him)(1829-1883)Age in 1844: 15Age in 1863: 34Student #2: Just like Uriah Smith, I think J.N. Andrews worked tirelessly for God. Remember reading about him? I can imagine what it would be like to hear him tell his story.JN Andrews: Good morning, Children, when I was young, I had the chance to get my law degree to become a congressman, but I turned that scholarship down, because I wanted to work for the Lord. I was only 15 in 1844, but I knew I wanted to work as God’s messenger. With God’s help, I learned to read the Bible in seven languages, including the original languages. I wrote articles for the Review, and I walked on foot as a missionary here in United States for five years, without a penny to my name. God directed me to speak to the officials in Washington DC so that our soldiers could have noncombatant status. I also served God as the third GC president, and I was a speaker with James and Ellen White at the first camp meeting. Pretty soon, I memorized the New Testament. I served as the first missionary to Europe, and without a regular salary. There, I and my children started a European Signs of the Times, and because we did not receive a salary, we were malnourished and in very poor health. Because I helped care for my daughter as she died of tuberculosis, I got tuberculosis too, but I knew that my feet were on the Rock of Ages and that the Lord held me by the right hand. Children, my message to you today is, no price is too big to pay for Christ’s work. Soon, you will see your Lord a-comin’.Teacher: Class, the faith of JN Andrews, as well as that of the other Adventist pioneers we thought of today from our book, is an example of how we can serve Jesus today, to carry on that work with the same determination and sacrifice. The SDA Church was officially organized in 1863, and today we have about 16 million members worldwide. Student #3: This was a great field trip! I am inspired to spend time every day with God, and to work for Him, as God chooses, wherever God sends me. I will use my resources for God’s work! These pioneers were so young, so I don’t have to wait to serve God, I can serve Him now.Teacher: I am so glad you feel that way! Let’s return to HMS Richards Adventist School, class! But it is good to be back at HMS Richards Adventist Elementary. Wait a minute, HMS Richards was a church pioneer, too, wasn’t he?Teacher: Yes, in a current sense. He passed away just back in 1985 at the age of 90. Harold Marshall Sylvester was an evangelist and author, and he founded the Voice of Prophecy radio ministry. As a youth, he lived here in Campion. Student #2: I wonder what he would say to us students if we could hear him today.Teacher: Well, we don’t have to use our imagination for what this church pioneer would say, because we can watch this video of him talking about going to camp meeting in this area, and Ellen White was the speaker. Just watch…(grades PreK-8Show Video of HMS Richards Sr Talking about the Camp Meeting(download this video from YouTube, just type HMS Richards Senior Ellen White in the search box)Student #3: I have heard that the Voice of Prophecy is moving here, right? We will be able their building from our school, HMS Richards!Teacher: Yes, and that is what makes our story today come full story. How fitting it is, that we can know that right here next to our campus that the Voice of Prophecy is working hard at spreading the story, the same story our pioneers shared far and wide, to all the world! Studying the story of our church pioneers inspires us today to carry on in the same faith. Let us rekindle the dedication of our pioneers, and implement it in bold and creative ways!
