NOKERO TEAMS UP TO BRING 1,000 SOLAR LIGHTS TO HAITI IN 2011JUNE 10, 2011 TOMBOYD MAIN,?NOKERO NEWS AND UPDATESA young girl in a tent city in Haiti plays with her new Nokero solar lights. If you want to eliminate the darkness of poverty, start by eliminating the darkness. These are the words that inspired a team from?American Green International, who took more than 200? HYPERLINK "" \o "Nokero Haiti Video extended version" \t "_blank" Nokero solar light bulbs?to Haiti one year after the devastating earthquake rocked the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country. What they found there – in the streets and in a tent city in?Port-au-Prince?– was even worse than they had imagined. Complete darkness descended on the city at night, leaving its residents helpless and unsafe in the dark, unable to see one another, help one another, cook, clean, or even go to the bathroom. Those who receive a durable, rainproof Nokero solar light bulb see their lives instantly changed. With more time in their day, they are more productive.?The $8 US they save each month?gives them much-needed money they can spend on food and medicine for their families. With six hours of light per night from their Nokero bulb, their cooking, cleaning, and chores can be done in the evening, leaving more time in the day for work. Perhaps most of all, they feel safer in the dangerous dark of night. The team saw a tremendous need for solar light, and vowed to return with 1,000 Nokero solar light bulbs to light the entire tent city (to learn more, visit?)That is why Nokero and American Green are partnering in the Gift of Light for Haiti program, where people can donate solar light to Haiti at?.In Haiti’s tent cities, what light there is usually comes from?kerosene?– a dangerous and polluting fuel. More than 1.6 billion people worldwide live without access to electricity, and more than 2 billion more only have intermittent electricity. With no other option, they are forced to buy expensive kerosene, a fuel which leaves black soot in their noses and lungs, and collectively emits 190 million tons of carbon dioxide each year (the equivalent of 30 million cars).Others use candles, or diesel fuel, or expensive batteries for light. Most, however, go without any light at all, surviving the dangers of life in a tent city without the comfort and safety of light. sharing is taking off in South Florida as programs thrive, expandForget the bus. Forget taxis, trolleys or shuttles. The next best thing in public transportation for some people is a bicycle.? In May, West Palm Beach will launch the first bike-share operation in?Palm Beach County?as SkyBikeWPB opens 15 bike stations in the downtown area. There will be 150 bikes available to rent by the half-hour or the hour.0-254000 Primarily designed for short trips, bike-share programs allow users to pick up a bike at one spot and return it to another. They can pedal around town to run errands, go to nightspots, to restaurants or to work. [It also allows for less car traffic and pollution in the area].Downtown West Palm Beach workers could hop on a SkyBike rather than walk to their favorite lunch spot. It's all part of the city's ongoing effort to make the downtown pedestrian- and bike-friendly and a place where a car isn't necessarily needed."If you live and work here, it is so convenient not to have to use your car," Clemente said. That's particularly appealing to young people who are flocking to downtowns and are gravitating toward alternative transportation, Clemente said. Its pioneering program has had some 4.5 million riders since it began, according to Citi Bike Miami. The program has been embraced by residents and tourists alike.astreeter@, 561-243-6537 or Twitter @adstreeterEcoCamp Patagonia - Torres del Paine (Sustainable Hotel) Parque Nacional Torres del Paine?Torre del PainePatagonia , Chile 0381000All of the electricity (which is very little as most of our efforts go to efficiency and electricity saving) comes from a micro-hydro turbine and photovoltaic panels. Energy is gathered together in a bank to power all of EcoCamp’s refrigerators, lighting, electrical appliances, stereos etc. Propane gas is only used to heat water and superior domes. A pilot scheme to heat shower water with solar energy is in motion. Water from the river enters the micro-hydro turbine for use. Electricity is limited and only available to guests for charging camera batteries and laptops, not using hairdryers or electric razors. Solar energy is very efficient in summer when Patagonia receives up to 17 hours of sunlight daily. EcoCamp Patagonia SketchDomes have skylight windows so natural light and heat can be utilized. This not only allows guests to follow natural light patterns but saves electricity, leaving us confident that our renewable energy sources are sufficient and fossil fuels are not needed.287020017843500Waste ManagementThe EcoCamp has a basic policy of environmentally-sensitive waste management which includes bringing as little paper, tin and plastic into the wilderness as possible. All waste brought in is separated at the source and stored according to its recycling status: organic, paper, glass, and dangerous or toxic materials. All non-organic materials are removed and sent to the closest town of Punta Arenas to be recycled or disposed of and organic material is fed to a neighboring pig farm. ? ................
