Pearson – Celebration Press Good Habits, Great Readers – Comprehensive Reading and Writing Plus: Core Balanced Literacy Program

Good Habits, Great Readers offers a comprehensive program to support a balanced literacy approach through whole-class, small-group, and independent literacy learning. Good Habits, Great Readers develops the seven habits and strategies of successful readers, and instruction consists of shared reading, guided reading, and independent practice.

Whole-class Shared Reading and Strategy Instruction. This program strand follows a logical, organized Scope & Sequence to provide deep thoughtful lessons rooted around seven habits of proficient readers. This strand models habits and strategies used by proficient readers to understand the text read and includes a range of highly motivating authentic texts to sustain students’ interest through a series of mini lessons and focus lessons. The mini lessons provide explicit skill instruction focusing on one of the five essential domains of reading instruction.

• For Grades K-3: 5 Trade Books, 16 Big Books, 10-14 Poetry Posters per grade, Audio CD

Small-group Guided Reading. This program strand provides a wide variety of leveled texts at each grade that supports varying skills, genres, and subject-area content for grades K-5 as teachers focus on building the students’ critical literacy skills. The Guided Reading lessons provide targeted instruction that help learners’ understand how reading works by learning techniques to figure out words and comprehend texts. Through the Guided Reading strand, students are able to acquire the skills need to read authentic text independently. In addition, the Teacher Guide provides explicit lesson plans support both new and experienced teachers.

Materials include:

• Teacher binders of individual lesson plans (on card stock) for each title in libraries

• Online database access for K-5 titles (two access codes will be provided; see Technology section below)

• Assessment card to guide formative assessment

• Words Their Way sorts (kindergarten only)

• Each grade level receives 6 copies of each title in respective grade-level guided reading sets - DRA levels as follows:

o Grade K - DRA levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (85 titles; 510 books total)

o Grade 1: DRA levels 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 (135 titles; 810 books total)

o Grade 2: DRA levels 18, 20, 24, and 28 (95 titles; 570 books total)

o Grade 3: DRA levels 30, 34, and 38 (65 titles; 390 books total)

o Grade 4: DRA level 40 (45 titles; 270 books total)

o Grade 5: DRA level 50 (45 titles; 270 books total)

Good Habits Great Readers: Writing is an in-depth writing program designed to complement the shared reading instruction of the Good Habits, Great Readers program. The seamless connection of the two programs provides a comprehensive literacy solution to meet students' needs. The writing lessons model the five stages of writing and six writing traits that empower students to critique their own work.

Words Their Way: Word Study in Action provides a comprehensive plan to improve phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction through word study which is critical to successfully teach children to read. Research has shown that learning to read and spell are reciprocal and developmental processes; and that students’ vocabulary knowledge and development impacts comprehension. The program’s hands-on experience addresses sound and spelling patterns, word meaning, use, and parts of speech. By building connections between meaning parts and their derivations, students enlarge their vocabularies to be better prepared for reading fiction and nonfiction text.

Developmental Reading Assessment, 2nd Edition (DRA2 K-3 and 4-8) for grades K-8, measures accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Development of the DRA2 was based on what educators and the extant literature research identified as being key characteristics and behaviors of good readers, as well as research concerning reading development and instruction.

The DRA2 helps:

• Identify students' reading achievement through systematic observation, recording, and evaluation of performance

• Analyze data, document progress, and communicate assessment information to administrators, parents, and students

• Drive effective reading instruction tailored to critical intervention points derived from assessment results

Supplemental Resources to Support the Core Program

Pearson – Scott Foresman Reading Street Sound-Spelling Cards Grades K-2 provides 48 cards that introduce sound spelling. Each card includes a photograph whose name begins with a target sound and a list of spellings for that sound. These materials were requested by the adoption committee to provide support to the sound-spelling instruction introduced in Words Their Way.

Pearson – Scott Foresman Reading Street Level Readers Database Online Access Pack. (See info in Technology section following.)

IN ADDITION EACH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL RECEIVE the Good Habits, Great Readers Reading Resource Room which includes 470 six-packs of both fiction & nonfiction titles of guided reading text for a total of 2820 books, an individual Teaching Plan card for each title, an Assessment Handbook, an Assessment Card, and a Book Room Organizer.

Workbooks

The Words Their Way Student Word Study Notebook for Grades K-5 will be made available at no cost for the life of the adoption (one per student, per year).

The SuperWriters: Grammar, Usage and Mechanics (GUMS) workbooks (which are part of Good Habits, Great readers: Writing) for Grades 3-5 will be made available at no cost for the life of the adoption (one per student, per year).

Handwriting Resources

Zaner-Bloser Handwriting (K-3) uses an easy, step-by-step approach to teach handwriting. Continuous-stroke, vertical manuscript reinforces reading development by focusing the students’ attention on the distinctive shapes and features of letters, leading to improved letter recognition.

Elementary Language Arts and Reading Technology Components

Good Habits, Great Readers Online Database Full searchable online database of all Guided Reading lessons. Searchable by book title, skill, DRA level and DRA2 Focus of Instruction.

Pearson – Scott Foresman - Reading Street Level Readers Database Online Access Pack. The searchable Level Reader Database provides over 1,000 titled fiction and nonfiction leveled readers at ones’ fingertip. The Level Readers can be searched by grade level, Guided Reading, content area, comprehension skill, key words, theme, DRA level, Lexile, and reading assessments.  The leveled readers can be printed or electronically assigned to students providing an opportunity to strengthen the home/school connection and for students to build a home library. To model natural fluent reading, students can hear the books read online. In addition, the Level Reader Database provides lesson plans and student activity pages for each leveled reader to support an additional 30 minutes of expanded instruction, and the readers are available in English and in Spanish.
