Please choose a novel you have not previously read and give me the title of the book by January 7, 2015.

You will be responsible for getting the book by yourself. You can buy it from a bookstore, borrow it from the library or find an online version by asking me!

You will be given time at the beginning of some classes to work on your independent novel study, please bring your novel and any needed materials each day just in case. If you do not have them or choose not to work on it, you will do silent reading as usual.

All written work must be typed or written very neatly in ink.

Please include your name, date, title and author on each assignment in MLA format

Remember to reference all quotes with the authors name and page number.

Hand all assignments in on time. The dates are given! If you miss the due dates, you will lose marks

PART 1: READING JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT (50 MARKS)

Your task is to complete 5 reflections from the following 10, from what you are reading.

Divide your novel roughly into 5 sections (you can do this by chapters or page numbers depending on your book).

For each entry include the date and the pages read. (Length: double spaced, full page for each)

Do not answer the same question twice. The due dates for all 5 reflections will be January 15, 2015

PLEASE NOTE: EACH OF THESE ASSIGNMENTS IS WORTH 10 MARKS TOWARD THE COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT. IF LATE, THEY WILL NOT BE MARKED.

1. Describe an experience you (or someone else you know) had that was like the experience of a character in the book.

2. Explain how a character in the book changed or is starting to change in the section you are responding to.

3. Explain why you would like to have one of the characters as a friend.

4. Create a diagram showing the setting of the story.

5. Sketch a scene in the book depicting a part of the plot and explain why you chose to draw this scene.

6. Describe a feeling or emotion that you experienced as you were reading this section and what caused this feeling.

7. Write your opinion to a character’s action or reaction. What would you have done?

8. Write about a connection to another book you have read. Think of similar characters, plots, settings and themes.

9. Write down a quote or passage that appeals to you. Describe why.

10. Give your opinion of the author’s writing style. What images captured your interest? How did the author create suspense?

PART 2: VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT (10 MARKS)

Choose ONE of the following assignments to complete. DUE January 13, 2015

1. VOCABULARY LOG: Quote the page number of each work used. Choose 20 words that you do not know the meaning of. Record the dictionary definition for each word.

2. CREATE A CROSSWORD: Minimum 10 words across and 10 words down. Provide a clue for each word as well as the answer key.

3. CREATE A THESAURUS: List 10 words that seem overused or boring. Rewrite the sentence from the book where the word was found with a better one.

4. LIST: 10 interesting, important, or unusual words from your book and explain your reasons for choosing each word.

PART 3: PROJECT (40 MARKS)

After you have finished your novel, choose ONE assignment from the list below to complete. This project offers you the opportunity to challenge your creative side and illustrate what you learned, enjoyed, or pondered on as you were reading. Due January 22, 2015

1. Draw, paint, or sculpt in detail a coloured map of where a major part of the story takes place. Label the major landmarks or points of interest and describe what parts of the plot take place where. Create a one page written submission to explain the map.

2. Write either a prequel or sequel to the story (5 or more pages)

3. Create a detailed 10 minutes power point presentation on the plot, characters theme

4. Create an attractive, interesting board game that incorporates parts of the novel (characters, setting, theme, and plot).

5. Create a shortened 5-10 page graphic novel of the book.

OR

Create your own original and creative assignment based on the novel. See me first for approval of your idea.

For the final assignment the following must be included:

- Everything will be typed, times new roman font sized 12, in MLA format

- A rough draft
