Round 4 – Oh Captain, My Captain

Theme: All of the answers in this packet will relate to captains, although answers do not necessarily all contain the word “captain”.

1) One of their novelty bonus tracks talks about a man whose "beard is long and red" and "who asks us all the questions", "The Captain", while dead reindeer carcasses are shown in a video for a charity single, "Don't Shoot Me Santa".  The song "It's Only Natural" was originally planned to appear on their album Make You Feel Dirty with "Uncle Johnny Did Cocaine" and other tracks, but that song was reworked to "Bones" and the album to Sam's Town.  One of their most popular songs contains the lyric "they say the Devil's water it aint' so sweet / you don't have to drink right now", while another mentions how "Now I'm falling asleep / and she's calling a cab" and laments "It started out with a kiss".  FTP, identify this band led by Brandon Flowers who created the songs "When You Were Young", "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me".

7) Billy Ellworthy joined several members of this band after it split up to form the group Flint, and later incarnations of this band included .38 Special's Max Carl on vocals.  Some of their faces are pasted above the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger on an album containing tracks like "Bad Time", 1974's All the Girls in the World Beware!!!  In one of their most famous songs, they describe how "Four young chaquitas in Omaha / Was waitin' for the band to return from the show" and how they're going to "help you party it down" in your town.  On their 1970 album Closer to Home, this group proclaims "If you return me, to my home port / I will kiss your mother earth", a song titled "I'm Your Captain".  With vocalists Don Brewer and Mark Farner, FTP, identify this group behind a popular cover of "The Loco-Motion" and the original, "We're An American Band".

8) The lead female character in this film was originally planned to cover the premier of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but in the final version of the script The Wizard of Oz is playing as that reporter meets with Trevor Baxter's character Dr. Jennings.  One of the few physical sets in this film was used to shoot a meeting between Editor Morris Paley and one of the film's protagonists, while almost all of the rest of the movie was shot before a blue screen, including an early version shot entirely with stand-ins.  Dr. Totenkopf attempts to end the world to bring in the title age, while Angelina Jolie has a brief role as Franky Cook, who pilots a flying submarine for the Royal Navy.  One of the main characters is a member of the Sky Legion, while another works for the Gotham City Chronicle.  Starring Gwyneth Paltrow as Polly Perkins and Jude Law as Joe Sullivan, FTP, name this Kerry Conran directed 2004 science fiction film.

13) For a brief time this band was known as Dumela, but its lasting name was assigned by an agent booking the band in its early days.  This band mentions how "Cause I am the captain of the ship / Wanting eyes and kissing lips" on a track from the unreleased "Lillywhtie Sessions", a canceled album eventually replaced by a 2001 album containing a retooled version of "#36", which had earlier appeared on their live album, Listener Supported.  Their early releases included Remember Two Things and Recently, while the singer "would dig a hole all the way to China" to end up with his "Dreamgirl" off the 2005 album, Stand Up.  LeRoi Moore plays the saxophone in this band, while Stefan Lessard plays bass.  "Satellite" and "Ants Marching" were two of the more successful tracks from their debut studio album, Under the Table and Dreaming.  FTP, identify this band who have found modern rock success with "Don't Drink the Water" and "Crush", led by a namesake South African.

14) In this film, two characters are transformed into a bird and a mouse while in the possession of Ditchwater Sal, a character who had a spell placed on her to keep her from seeing an important object.  Several characters are all pursuing the same girl in order to obtain their Heart’s Desire, the right to rule a kingdom and to regain youth in this film.  Changes from the book of the same name include an odd expansion of the role of Captain Shakespeare, played by Robert DeNiro, as well as a climactic battle with the witches; a situation is resolved in the book when Lamia discovers that Yvaine has given her heart to Tristan.  Taking place between Stormhold and the village of Wall, FTP, identify this 2007 film about the search for a fallen star, adapted from a Neil Gaiman novel of the same name starring Claire Danes and Charlie Cox.
