|Whole class: Note that before this session you will need to get chn to cut out and make a role-play mask. Refer to the Information sheet with Rama and |

|Sita song words & role-play ideas (session resource). Sing `There was a Princess Long Ago´ and ask chn to join in with the repeated parts. This song is |

|based on a story about a Princess called Sita and a Prince called Rama. Would you like to hear the story? Sing the beginning of the song again, this |

|time add the details of the story using the Information sheet on The story of Diwali (session resource). Give out props and Rama and Sita masks (session|

|resources). Split chn into groups of 5, each child will choose the part of either Rama, Sita, Hanuman, a deer or Ravana. Ask each group to go to find a |

|space in the class. Sing `There was a Princess Long Ago´ again, and ask chn to act out each line of the song; for role-play tips again refer to the |

|Information sheets with Rama and Sita song words & role-play ideas (session resource). Ask each group to share their role-play interpretation with the |

|class. Repeat singing the song and ask volunteers to play a musical accompaniment using percussion instruments. The festival Diwali celebrates the |

|victory of good over evil and light over darkness. In the story when Rama and Sita returned home, Diva lamps were lit to welcome the royal procession. |

|Group work: Tell the children they will now be exploring some activities that are part of the Diwali festival. |

|1. Rangoli patterns (Teacher guided). During Diwali people usually decorate the outside of their houses with Rangoli patterns. Refer to the Information |

|sheet on How to make Rangoli Patterns (session resource) to make traditional Rangoli patterns on the outside or inside of paper plates. 2. Diva lights |

|(Assistant guided). Making Divas: Show children a real Diva. These are small oil lamps, and are available at Indian shops throughout the Diwali period. |

|Rows of Divas are lit and placed on window ledges and balconies in houses. Diwali means row of lights. Refer to the Information sheet on How to make |

|Diva Lights (session resource) and explain to chn they are going to make Diva lights using clay and decorate them with sequins. 3. Play dough Rehearse |

|making the Diva lights using play dough and sequins, provide a real Diva lights for chn to observe. 4. Sweets. Fill cardboard boxes with pretend sweets |

|made from tissue paper, then decorate the sweets and boxes using glitter, sequins and special drawings. 5. Den building. Provide chn with |

|blankets/sheets and designate an area for chn to make their dens. Provide torches and the story `The Dark´ (see weblink). 6. Rama and Sita performance. |

|Colour and cut out masks to re-enact the story (see weblink one and weblink two). 7. Firework sparkles. Spread glue all over a blank page and add |

|glitter to create a firework display (see Session 1 resources). |

|Plenary |Allow time to talk about all of the things they have made. In particular talk about the chn´s Diva lights. Why are the lights so special |

| |in Diwali? (Light is a symbol of hope & victory of light over darkness or good over evil). Talk about the story of Rama and Sita: Who was |

| |good and who was bad? Refer to the Information sheet on Hanukkah, Diwali and Eid song words (session resource), then sing part two of the |

| |light celebration songs `Diwali´ and think up some actions. |
