High Calorie Drinks

Your child needs calories to grow. Drinks are an easy way to get extra calories. Here are some recipes for drinks that have a lot of calories in them. Choose drinks that your child will like best to help meet their calorie needs.

This handout provides examples of food options for your child's diet; this is not a full list. To create a food list that is specific to you and your family, work with a dietitian. Tips for giving high calorie drinks

Give your child high calorie drinks with meals or between meals as a snack.

If your child is on a special diet (like a carbohydrate-counted diet) read all food labels when choosing ingredients.

The calories listed on the recipes below are estimates and may not be completely accurate.

You can add extra calories to any drink by adding:

1/3 cup powdered Carnation Breakfast Essentials Nutrition Drink Mix, any flavor (extra 130 calories)

Directions

1. Mix ingredients together with a spoon or blend with an immersion hand blender or in a blender.

2. Add optional ingredients as desired.

How can I meet my child's special nutrition needs?

Your child's dietitian can share ideas for changing recipes that are specific to your child's nutrition needs. These may change the nutritional content (calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat and calcium), so it is important to talk with the dietitian about how to make the right changes.

What can my child drink if they do not eat cow dairy foods?

If your child does not eat or drink cow dairy foods, use these alternative milks in place of cow's milk.

? Soy milk ? Rice milk ? Nut milk (such as almond, cashew, or macadamia) ? Coconut milk ? Oat milk ? Hemp milk

What can my child drink if they are on a reduced fat diet?

If your child needs less fat, choose low-fat or nonfat foods and drinks like yogurt and milk.
