4 Ways to Take Screen Captures in Windows 10Occasionally we’re asked to talk about the Windows tools you can use to take quick screenshots (screen capture, photo stills, etc.) of your screen. We've done a bit of testing and experimentation and we've found four different ways for taking all kinds of screenshots, all without using third-party programs. There are other, commercial, screen capture applications, but here are 4 ways to take screenshots in Windows 10 without buying an app.1. Use the Keyboard Shortcut – Print Scrn (Print Screen)The first method is also the best known. It works in all versions of Windows, including Windows 10. On your keyboard, press the?PrtScn?(Print Screen) key. This creates a screenshot of the whole screen and saves it to the?Clipboard. The screenshot is not stored as a file on your hard drive. If the Print Scrn key does not work and you have a Fn (Function) key on your keyboard, press the Fn key + Print Scrn simultaneously to capture your screen to your clipboard.Then, open an image editing application like?Paint, or a Word Processing application like MS Word (let’s use MS Word for this project)and paste the image from the clipboard. You can save the resulting Paint or MS Word document as a file. You can even do some basic editing on either Paint or MS Word. Enter a heading for this document in the Header. Save this file as Exercise 11 – Screen Capture. Paste the captured image from the Clipboard into your document below the title.Now, lets do some simple formatting. Double click on the pasted picture to open the Picture Formatting Ribbon. Use Wrap Text and Position to allow the picture to moved around and centered. Use Crop to trim the picture a bit. Remove the Windows 10 bits leaving just the document plus a little more. Just select the picture, and then select Crop from the Formatting Ribbon. Adjust the black corners to trim the picture to suit. Click off of the picture to set your changes to the picture. Save your changes to the document.2. Next-up, use the Keyboard Shortcut – Windows Key + PrtScnIf you want to take a screenshot of the whole screen and save it as a file on the hard drive, without using any other tools, then press?Windows + PrtScn?(or Fn + PrntScrn) on your keyboard. Windows 10 will store the screenshot in Pictures?> Screenshots.ScreenShot your word document with the original cropped PrintScreen. Double click to set an insertion point below the original picture on your document. Use method #2 to save a picture of this document to a file. Insert this picture file into your document below the first picture. Format, Crop and position the picture. 3. Use the Keyboard Shortcut - Alt + PrtScnIn Windows 10, you can also take screenshots of the Active Window. Open the window you want to capture, adjust it to the size you want your capture, and press?Alt + PrtScn?on your keyboard. The screenshot is saved to the clipboard.Open?Paint?or MS Word and paste the image so that you can edit and save it to your Windows device.4. Use the Snipping ToolThe?Snipping Tool?is a great desktop app for taking screenshots. It can create all kinds of screenshots and do some light editing. You will find the Snipping Tool in your Start Menu > All apps > Windows Accessories > Snipping Tool. Unless you have complex needs, you can use the built-in tools and features, without having to install third-party programs. However, each method has its pros and cons…that is, there are reasons to choose one method over another in practical applications.Assignment:Open a new Word document. Set the Font and Font size to Times New Roman – 12 and Update Normal to Match the Selection. Insert a blank, three column header and fill in your heading formatted to (Normal) Times New Roman-12. Save your document to OneDrive. Close the Header.One the next line under the Header, enter the Title, Screen Captures. As always, format the Title as Arial-20, Bold and Italics.Now perform a Screen Capture of the top half of this document using the Print Scrn key method.Paste the Screen Capture into the Word document.Double-click the picture to open the Picture Formatting Ribbon.Use the Crop Tool to trim the picture to just outside of the document.While in the Formatting Ribbon and the pasted image selected, click on Positioning and choose center top.With the left mouse button, slide the image until it is centered from side to side and rests just under the title.Using the Snipping Tool, perform a Screen Capture of the top half of the Word document.Save this image in Pictures.Insert this picture into the Word document just below the first picture.If done correctly, the Snipping tool will crop the image as it performs the Screen Capture so further cropping will be unnecessary.With this second image selected, open Positioning in the Picture Formatting Ribbon, and choose Center, Middle.Adjust the size of the second picture to match the first by adjusting the size by the corners.Left click and slide the second picture to line up with the first.Instructor check the project.Print out the project for grading. ................
