4 Instructions

Based on the topic from this week’s lecture and reading, you will be using Google Earth software program (a free download) to explore geospatial tools, data, and visualization. Be sure to save your work often!

6 Deliverables

Follow the instructions below to complete the exercises. Answer the questions throughout the lab (numbered). Your lab document should be typed, well organized, and submitted based on the “How To” guidelines provided in the course syllabus.

PART I

In this exercise you follow the instructions from an exercise in your text: 1.1 Geospatial Lab Application, ‘Introduction to Geospatial Concepts and Google Earth’ (starting on page 19).

• Read through the introduction and objectives

• Skip over the next few sections (software, data, and localizing) and start with 1.1 Starting to Use Google Earth (page 16).

• Follow the instructions for the remainder of the exercise and answer the questions below.

Questions

1| What is the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD?

2| What is one example of nonspatial data related to the Corn Palace?

3| While in Street View, what other places are around the Corn Palace?

4| By being able to see the Corn Palace from above and standing on the ground – what details from the aerial view can help identify what the building is?

5| There are always many ways to get from point A to point B. When you asked for directions from the Corn Palace to Wall, SD – why do you suppose Google Earth sent you in that particular path?

6| Based on that route, what is the driving distance between the two locations?

7| What is the elevation, latitude & longitude for the point representing the overlook (section 1.3) in the Badlands National Park?

8| When in the ‘tilt’ mode and flying over the Badlands – how does the terrain modeling aid in the visualization of the Badlands?

9| Insert the .jpg you created of Mt. Rushmore

10| What is the measured distance between the rear of the amphitheater and the top of the monument?

11| Create a .jpg of Mt. Rushmore that shows the placemarks you created and insert in your lab.

12| What is located at the following Geographic Coordinates: latitude 43.836584, Longitude -103.623403?

13| What is located at the following Geographic Coordinates: latitude 43.845709, Longitude -103.563499?

14| Explain the functionality of one of the ‘other’ features in Google Earth that you explore in exercise 1.7.
