Road Trip Project

Road Trip Project

Have students plan a U.S.A. road trip. Students will create a map showing their route, compile pictures of physical features of the regions through which they will be travelling, determine distance and calculate amount and cost of gasoline, and identify historical sites they plan to visit. Possible formats can include poster, booklet, PowerPoint, project board.

Summer is finally here and your family is going to take a road trip. They figure since you just took Geography you would be the best person to plan out the trip. Your assignment is to start from your home and plan out a road trip with 10 destinations and back. You may use the internet to choose a destination. Each destination must be in a different state, except for Florida, which can have 2 destinations. What you are going to turn in is this (in this order):

I. List - of the 10 places you are going in order. Start from your zip code and go on from there. Make sure your trip is efficient, don’t waste time or gas. Some examples: The Alamo, The Liberty Bell, The Statue of Liberty, Mt. Rushmore, Gateway Arch.

II. Written description - (6 or more sentences per destination) of the places you are going to visit. What types of things are we you going to do there? What is the history behind your destination? Why is your destination significant? If you’re going to a nature place like Yellowstone National Park, what activities will you do and what will you see. If you can’t write 6 sentences about your destination then you must find another one.

III. Written directions - to each destination in order. So if you go to Disney then Panama Beach, you give directions from Disney to Panama beach. Don’t forget to give me directions back to Middleburg from your last destination. I only want the major roads (State and National). Don’t worry about the small stuff.

IV. Cost analysis - (how much money is this going to cost) based on the following:

a. Cost of Gas – Google the average gas price in the state that has your destination. Example $2.00 a Gallon as and a car that gets 20 miles to the gallon with a 19 gallon tank.

b. Cost of Lodging – You will calculate how much it will cost for hotels using $70.00 a night.

1. One destination = 1 or more nights at hotel. You must also figure in driving time. I don’t want to know where just the cost.

2. Every 500 miles driven at once and you must rest at hotel for night.

c. Cost of Food – (per person) $5.00 for breakfast, $7.00 for lunch, $11.00 for dinner. I don’t want to know where you ate just the cost.

d. Other – Any other expenses you may encounter on your trip. For instance cost of souvenirs, Disney tickets, game tickets, tolls, admission to National parks, or any other items not mentioned.

This project will require extensive use of the internet. For the written directions you can use Map Quest or any other directions web site, but do not give me a print out from those sites…it must be written.
