Stimulants, like cocaine and amphetamines, make a person feel more active and awake. They can also make a person feel restless, tense, and irritable. Some stimulants are very dangerous to use. Repeated use may cause physical and emotional dependence. Depressants, like alcohol and barbiturates, slow the heart and make other muscles relax. They often make people fall asleep. People can become physically and emotionally dependent on depressants. Narcotics/Opiates slow the heart, brain, and nervous system. They stop the brain from sensing pain. The use of narcotics/opiates, like heroin or morphine, can cause strong physical and emotional dependence. Hallucinogens, like LSD and PCP can change the way a person sees or hears things. Vocabulary Lesson 3

Read the following paragraph. Look at each of the underlined terms in the paragraph. Try to figure out the meaning of each term. Then complete each sentence below by writing the correct definition on the line.

Some drugs affect different body systems. Drugs that slow down the heart and other body systems are depressants. They can calm people and make them fall asleep. Another group of drugs makes people feel more awake. These drugs are called stimulants. They make the heart beat faster. In addition, there are strong drugs called narcotics/opiates that stop the brain from sensing pain. Other drugs change the way people sense the world. These drugs, called hallucinogens, change the way the messages are carried to the brain. The effect of a hallucinogen can return long after the person has stopped taking the drug and is called a flashback. In addition, inhalants are chemicals that have a drug like effect when they are breathed. Inhalants that are liquids are called solvents. Solvents give off gases, or fumes. Breathing these fumes can make a person feel dizzy or ill. Marijuana is an example of a gateway drug. Gateway drugs increase the risk of people trying stronger drugs.
