This session is based on a workshop presented by Gary Price, co-founder of Library Journal’s INFODocket and Full Text Reports. The workshop, “30 Mobile Apps for Librarians in 40 Minutes” was presented at the 2015 Computers in Libraries Conference. What does mobile mean today? 64% of?American adults now own a smartphone of some kind, up from 35% in the spring of 2011.?Smartphone ownership is especially high among younger Americans (85% of those aged 18-29), as well as those with relatively high income and education levels. Smartphones are used for much more than calling, texting, or basic internet browsing. Users are turning to these mobile devices as they navigate a wide range of life events: 62% of smartphone owners have used their phone in the past year to?look up information about a health condition.57% have used their phone to do?online banking.44% have used their phone to look up real estate listings?or other information about a place to live.43%?have used their phone to look up?information about a job.40% to look up?government services or information.30% to?take a class or get educational content.18% to?submit a job application. A majority of smartphone owners use their phone to follow along with breaking news, and to share and be informed about happenings in their local communitySmartphones also help users navigate the world around them, from turn by turn driving directions to assistance with public transit. Privacy and SecurityLost and Stolen Devices: Consumer Reports believes that over 3 million smartphones are stolen each year. Their very nature makes them attractive to those prone to thievery because they are small, easily concealable, carry a ton of valuable information on them and they’re shockingly easy to jailbreak or fence.Take steps to protect your data and your deviceSet a screen lockMake sure your data is backed upEncrypt your deviceTurn on 2-factor authentication (see “b” below)Only download from am trusted sourceIf you lose the device, there are apps you can use to get it back or at least disable itAndroid Device manager: A Google app that allows you to track and secure your devices remotely. You can remotely track your devices, cause them to ring, change the lock code, or completely wipe them. On Apple devices, use iCloud and Find my iPhone to track the phone. You can also turn on “lost mode,” which will remotely lock your phone and suspend Apple Pay. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second level of authentication to an account log-in. When you have to enter only your username and one password, that's considered a single-factor authentication. 2FA requires the user to have two out of three types of credentials before being able to access an account. (android) (iOS devices) Ghostery () is a browser add-on that shows you all the companies that are tracking you when you visit a website, and allows you to block them from collecting data, if you choose.Duckduckgo () is an Internet?search engine?that emphasizes protecting searchers’ privacy and avoiding the filter bubble?of personalized search results. DuckDuckGo distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users and by deliberately showing all users the same search results for a given search term. DuckDuckGo emphasizes getting information from the best sources rather than the most sourcesApp Discovery: Use Quixley: : A search engine for apps. You can choose a platform, such as iOS or Android, and enter what you want the app to be able to do. Password managersLastPass: (Android and iOS): Passwords in LastPass are protected by a master password, encrypted locally, and synchronized to any other browser. LastPass has a form filler that automates password entering and form filling. It also supports password generation, site sharing and site logging1Password: (Android and iOS): It remembers all of your website passwords for you so you never have to enter them in. All you need to remember is one password (hence the name), which will give you access to all of your other passwords. Once you add a password, your web browser can log you into your favorite sites using only that one password you made. It also can keep track of secure notes, passport numbers, medical information, frequent flier numbers, and even your credit cards.Email (and the Future of eMail)Inbox by Google (): the app is focused on improving email productivity and organization by allowing the user to snooze messages for a later time, bundle similar emails together, and receive?Google Now-style cards for things such as flight times. On June 24, 2015, Google added an "Undo Send" button to Inbox, allowing users to retract a sent email within 10 seconds of clicking "Send."Cloud Magic: (Android and iOS) CloudMAgic is a simple and easy-to-use email client app that unifies all of your Web mail accounts into one view. It offers a handful of options for viewing the content of your inboxes, such as showing only unread mail across multiple accounts. ProductivityIFTTT (If This, Then That) (Android and iOS) IFTTT?is a web-based service that allows users to create chains of simple conditional statements, called "recipes", which are triggered based on changes to other web services such as Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. For example, if you like a photo on Instagram, then IFTTT automatically saves that photo to the Dropbox folder of your choosing.Papership (iOS Only): Designed for iPad and iPhone, PaperShip syncs with Zotero and Mendeley libraries, providing access to all items stored inside them. To add new references, it also imports directly from the web and automatically downloads full text PDFs when available. Each PDF can be annotated and highlighted, then stored back within the library with every modification saved. Mendely (iOS and Android): A free citation manager which allows the user to create a searchable collection of citations and documents, and provides PDF annotation. ?The free Mendeley account stores all files in the cloud, allowing the user to work seamlessly between devicesZotero (iOS and Android): An open source citation manager which automatically senses content in your web browser, allowing the user to add it to a personal library with a single click. By setting up a free Zotero account all citations and documents are stored in the cloud, allowing the user to work seamlessly between devices.?Pocket (iOS and Android): Pocket is a sublime ‘save-it-for-later’ app which lets you archive interesting content from the Web and then quickly find it again from almost any device. Even if you’re without an internet connection, the app will know to download your articles for offline access; perfect when you’re about to board a plane, train or underground tube. Maps and TransportCitymaps (Android and iOS): combines FourSqaure, Google Maps, etc. into one. You create a list of your favorite date-night spots and the app will put it on a map with driving or walking directions, which you can then share with friends. Citymapper (Android and iOS): Citymapper maps transit routes for 17 major metropolitan areas, including London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Mexico City, with more cities to come. With access to your location, the app can also alert you to get off the train or bus at the appropriate stop.Image and Music Recognition Search CamFind (Andriod and iOS): With CamFind, understanding the world around you has never been easier. Simply take a picture of any object and CamFind uses mobile visual search technology to tell you what it is. The CamFind app provides fast, accurate results with no typing necessary. SoundHound (Android and iOS) SoundHound is a music search and discovery experience that identifies music being played around you. Tap the orange button to instantly identify songs and see lyrics, share, stream, buy or simply explore more about artists you know and love or have just discovered. You can also search by singing or humming into SoundHound, making it the only app in the world that can give you results through unique sing/hum search technology.Fast Facts and Ready Reference Wilmington Downtown: Discover everything that historic downtown Wilmington has to offer, including; restaurant listings with menus, shopping and business information, current and upcoming events (including live music and theater), entertainment and attractions, hotels and lodging, nightlife, local news and transportation information. Listings include the distance from your current location, and offers precise GPS directions to every destination. Another app Wilmington has Wilmington eTours. This app has walking tours of historic Wilmington, available for $4 each through in-app purchase. Your hometown may have an app similar to this; Fayetteville has one called ScoutLook that covers both Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. AllMusic HYPERLINK "" (iOS only) AllMusic?is a comprehensive and in-depth resource for finding out more about albums, bands, musicians and songs. Wolfram│Alpha (Android and iOS) Wolfram│Alpha is a computational knowledge engine: it generates output by doing computations from its own internal knowledge base, instead of searching the web and returning links (Apple’s Siri used Wolfram│Alpha for about 25% of it’s answers)Multiple Apps from the World Bank apps. (Android and iOS) Topics such as World Development Indicators for economic, external debt, health and population; World Bank Poverty and Inequality Datafinder, etc. Multiple apps from the United Nations unric/en/apps-directory (Android and iOS) There are more than 30 apps, such as Africa renewal magazine, AIDSInfo, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Forestry app, and many, many others.Multiple Mobile Sites from the GPO mobile (Android and iOS): Sites cover topics such as Mobile Member Guide for the 114th Congress, Mobile Budget of the US Government for FY16, the Plum Book app and the Presidential Documents app. Multiple Mobile Apps from the US Census mobile (Android and iOS): Cover topics such as America’s Economy, and dwellr, an app that will let you discover the top 25 US cities that fit your lifestyle. Federal Government Mobile Apps Directory (Android and iOS) It’s a huge list, alphabetized by agency, beginning with the Administration for Children and Families and the American Battle Monuments Commission, through the CIA and the Department of Justice, Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, and the United States Geological Survey.These congressional information apps allow you to read the latest bills, laws, and see what bills were recently voted on, and find members of Congress by using your phone’s location, a zip code, a last name, or a state. You can also read tweets and watch videos from members’ Twitter and YouTube accounts, and reply to a member of Congress on Twitter from within the app, using your own account.
