For this first paper, we are going to take on the issue of Population.
As you know from lecture, the global population estimate for 2100 has been raised from nine billion to eleven billion (recall that we now have a little over 7 billion). This is by far the biggest issue facing humanity in the 21st century.
You are going to take on the issue of population through an investigation of
Education.
Choose from the following topics, then choose ONE side to argue:
1-28 Education in poor countries, where the majority of population increase will take
place, will get even worse than now. This creates footloose young men who cause trouble in their home countries and others.
VS
As populations in poor countries have increased in the last fifty years, education levels have also increased. This will just be expanded and everything will be rosy.
1-29 Madrassas. In places like Pakistan most young men are educated in radical
religious schools, where they learn to hate. This will get worse as population increases and public education is totally overwhelmed.
VS
In many countries, most notably the United Kingdom, these radical schools are being closed down, and the students integrated into public schools. This problem is over-rated.
1-30 One argument for an increased population is that the more people we have, the more geniuses we create to solve our problems. So 11 billion people will include more geniuses than 7 billion people. Problem solved.
VS
This is the dumbest idea in the world. Eleven billion people fighting for resources, water, education, housing, the good life will not miraculously have their problems solved by a handful of geniuses.
