Navigator’s Notes

Worth Sirs,

So much has happened since the last newsletter! I would first like to Welcome our newest Sir Knights who were exemplified on October 27, 2018

SK Timothy Rarick

SK John O’Brien

SK Alban Meadows

Sunday after the Exemplification there was an “All Navigators” Meeting in which Our Assembly was awarded the Civic Award for Our efforts in 2017-2018. We were also informed that the next Exemplification will be held in Richmond, VA April 27, 2019. More details to follow regarding the venue. Time to get out there and recruit out next Sir Knights.

As you know we are only into the 1st week of November and we have already been out supporting the Virginia Special Olympics and exercised Our Patriotic Duty by voting!

Next, we celebrate the Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary to the end of World War I There will be a parade on Monday November 12, 2018 at the Virginia Beach waterfront.

Parking will be at the Virginia Beach Convention center and we will meet on 15th Street at 830am for a 900am kick off.

Worthy Sirs as we continue through this fraternal year, I would like you all to consider an Officer role within the Assembly. We need a new Faithful Comptroller; Sir Knight Fran Foster has held this position for six years and he is looking for a little relief. If you might be interested in this position or any position within the Assembly, please let me know.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Veterans of Our Assembly for your service. For Veterans are the backbone of this country. Without them, there would be no United States of America. No Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. We would not be known as the “Land of Opportunity”. You Veterans have protected our rights as Americans and made the dreams of our Forefathers possible. I salute you all . Please see the last page of the newsletter for Veterans Day specials that are happing for Veterans.

Why is Veterans Day on November 11th?

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Prayer for Our Troops:

“Lord, hold our troops on your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need, Amen.”

Father Frank Sez

Give your servant a discerning heart. 1 Kings 3:9

A man filed a lawsuit against a woman, claiming she had his dog. In court, the woman said her dog couldn’t be his and told the judge where she had purchased it. The real owner’s identity was revealed when the judge released the animal in the courtroom. Tail wagging, it immediately ran to the man!

Solomon, a judge in ancient Israel needed to settle a somewhat similar issue. Two women each claimed to be the mother of the same baby boy. After considering both arguments, he requested a sword to divide the infant in half. The real mother begged Solomon to give the baby to the other woman, choosing to save her son’s life even if she could not have him (1 Kings 3:26). Solomon gave the baby to her.

Wisdom is necessary as we decide what’s fair and moral, right and wrong. If we truly value wisdom, we can ask God for a discerning heart, like Solomon did (v. 9). God may answer our request by helping us balance our needs and desires with the interests of others. He may also help us weigh short-term benefits against long-term (sometimes eternal) gains so we can honor Him in how we live.

Our God is not only a perfectly wise judge, but He is also a personal counselor who is willing to give us godly wisdom in great amounts (James 1:5).

I worship You, God, as the true source of wisdom. Please show me how to make choices that bring honor to Your name.

Need wisdom? Seek it from the Source who alone can provide it—God.

In keeping with past articles, God is pleased with work done well. God is pleased with His Knights of Columbus and Assembly 2588.

Until next issue,

PAX,

PFN Frank Mulcahy

The many tasks we face each day

Can burden and oppress,

But spending time with God each day

Can bring relief from stress. —Sper

OUR SYMBOL:

Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead The Most Holy Trinity.

o The Globe God the Father, Creator of the Universe.

o The Cross God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind.

o The Dove God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.

HISTORY: In the early years of the Fourth Degree, members met as part of their councils, mostly after meetings. In 1910, during a reorganization of the Order's leadership, the first Assemblies were created. Additionally, the position of Supreme Master was established to lead the Fourth Degree internationally. Vice Supreme Masters lead Provinces and Masters head Districts. This system has spread and flourished as Sir Knights not only serve their local Church through their service to local councils but also their joint efforts in these Assemblies. The Honor Guard, first called for in 1886 was officially formed in 1902, for ceremonial purposes. Since that time, the uniforms of the Color Corps have varied, however all have shared the similar theme of mariners. Most noticeable in today's current uniform is the chapeau worn with ostrich feathers.

MEMBERSHIP: The Fourth Degree ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the order: charity, unity, fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing with at least six months membership in the order – is eligible for membership in the Forth Degree. The primary purpose of the Forth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and love of and loyalty to the knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Forth Degree groups called Assemblies. Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.

EVENTS: The first Exemplification of the new Degree was scheduled to be held in the Astor Hotel in New York City on February 22, 1900. However, there were so many candidates the Exemplification had to be moved to a larger venue. Therefore, the site was moved to the Lenox Lyceum. At this first Exemplification of the Fourth Degree 1,100 members of the Knights of Columbus, being in good standing "took their fourth." The second Exemplification, held in Boston on May 8, 1900 saw another 750 Third Degree knights join the ranks of Sir Knights.  cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Once a Sir Knight attains an office, he is entitled to wear the colors of that office until elected or appointed to a higher office, except for the Marshal [appointed by the Master of District] and the Color Corps Commanders [appointed by the Faithful Navigator] who are appointed for a specific term and then revert to their previous colors when
