GENERAL PURPOSE:

Operate a transit bus in passenger service over designated fixed routes in a safe, legal, and professional manner following principles of good customer service to provide dependable, courteous transportation for residents and guests.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direct supervision of the Bus Service Operations and Maintenance Supervisor and the Director, Transportation Department.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Serves as acting shift coordinator or transit dispatcher as needed.

Responsible for maintaining order on the bus at all times. In an emergency, must analyze the situation quickly and calmly while forcefully directing passengers to safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operate a transit bus on a fixed route, adhering to published time schedule.

Provide reliable, professional bus service and apply rules relating to safe bus operation.

Intermittently analyze driving conditions; identify safety hazards; and report these or other observations of possible concern to appropriate public safety officials.

Answer inquiries regarding bus routes, schedules, and fees in a courteous manner.

Inspect vehicle prior to putting same into service; complete and maintain required information on appropriate inspection reports.

Gather and maintain all information and records as required by the South Portland Bus Service.

Determine and collect proper fares in accordance with internal operating procedures; prepare daily accounting report reflecting types of fares received and track number and type of passengers.

Comply with all applicable Federal, State and City laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.

Perform routine washing, general cleaning, detailing, on transit department vehicles.

Serve as acting shift coordinator or transit dispatcher as needed.

Perform other duties as directed by the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor or Director.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Share additional workload and overtime necessitated by scheduled and unscheduled time-off such as training, vacations, personal days, sick days; or other unplanned absences; requires flexibility and cooperation in adjusting work days or hours to meet customer service demands.

Participate in Work Action Teams to develop standard practices, policies, procedures, etc. to continuously improve the Bus Service.

Operate a variety of passenger vehicles including buses, vans, pickup truck with snow plow and other city vehicles or equipment; under emergency conditions assist other departments.

MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Possess or be able to acquire a valid State of Maine Class B driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements and maintain said license for the duration of employment.

Must have a telephone in the residence or be available by an equally effective means of communication approved by the supervisor.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Extensive knowledge and high level of proficiency in operating a transit bus, including pre-trip inspection of equipment.

Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, processes, methods, policies, and procedures used to operate the transit system in a safe, dependable, efficient and timely manner.

Knowledge of the bus schedule and the area of operations including connections to other regional transportation providers to answer customer inquiries in a courteous and patient manner.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees using interpersonal skills to work in a team environment.

Ability to communicate effectively with passengers from diverse cultural, ethnic, age, and socio-economic groups, as well as those with disabilities, in a respectful manner.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action and to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

Ability to operate a phone, copy machine, fax machine, two-way radio, and simple hand tools.

Ability to present a professional, neat appearance.

Ability to work long hours and not be subject to burnout or stress.

Ability to read and write.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While forming the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of vehicles. The employee is required to stand, walk, drive, talk, hear, sit, climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds when working in the maintenance garage; to sit for long periods of time; to bend and twist the neck or body repeatedly; to maneuver arms in continuous repetitive motion; good hearing and visual acuity is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily inside a vehicle and according to shift schedule; may be required to work extended hours. Must drive vehicle in all weather conditions. May be exposed to hazardous or unpleasant working conditions including, but not limited to: dust, noise, temperatures, road and weather conditions, traffic, vehicle fumes, hazardous materials, blood-borne pathogens, and strong odor from poor human hygiene.

When cleaning and performing minor maintenance of transit vehicles in a typical maintenance garage may be exposed to moving mechanical machinery, vehicle exhaust fumes, noise, seasonally hot and cold temperature extremes, and various cleaning products or solvents.

SELECTION GUIDELINES:

Formal application; rating of education; rating of customer service experience and commercial driving experience (it is desirable the applicant have a minimum of three to five years of commercial driving experience); oral interview and reference check; job related tests may be required.

Position is defined as 'Safety Sensitive' per the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations and requires that person hired into it is subject to random drug and alcohol testing in addition to pre-employment testing, and reasonable suspicion and post accident drug/alcohol testing. The successful candidate will be required to pass a drug and alcohol test as a post-offer prerequisite to employment, and is subject to the alcohol and drug policy testing procedures as a condition of employment.

Motor Vehicle Records must show that candidate must not have accumulated more than four (4) points on the license in the past three (3) years. Must not have had a DUI in the past seven (7) years.

Position requires an initial and renewed Medical Examiner’s Certificate under FMCSR 49 CFR 391.41, 41-391-49.
