The incumbent is required to assist in the development and monitoring of standards for selection and training of state correctional peace officer apprentices, as well as advanced rank and file, and first and second level supervisory state correctional peace officers for the CDCR. The Correctional Officer will review and evaluate curriculum and training delivery methods and provide recommendations based on established training standards for correctional peace officers to the CPOST Executive Director. The Correctional Officer will operate congruently with organizational culture, values, and vision, and will support and promote a positive work environment and productive relationships with all staff and stakeholders of CDCR in an ethical and professional manner. Duties include but are not limited to:40%Oversees and participates in the development, review, revision, and evaluation of CPOST training standards and the evaluation of training materials, method of instruction, and student performance based on established training standards for correctional peace officers and peace officer apprentices specific to CDCR and the Department of Youth and Community Restoration. These standards will be based on legal mandates, changing training needs, departmental priorities, directives and statutes, and strategic goals as approved by CPOST. Statewide travel is required, including institutions, youth facilities, Division of Adult Parole Operations, as well as various locations for meetings, to conduct site visits to assess the needs in the field for development of on-the-job training guidelines and to attend training classes. 20%Attends Cadet On-Site Institutional Training and Rehabilitative Program Site Visits to ensure cadets are utilizing practical applications of lessons learned at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy . Travel to institutions, fire camps, juvenile facilities, and training centers, for the purpose of outreach visits and to identify and resolve issues related to the training of apprentices. Mentor correctional peace officers during their apprenticeship as they fulfill various posts serving the unique missions and inmate population within the institutions. Attend training courses at institutions, Division of Adult Parole Operations, juvenile facilities, the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center, as well as other locations, to ensure course content matches with appropriate delivery methods and aligns with departmental and CPOST standards. Assists in audits to monitor compliance with established standards. Conduct and complete qualitative and quantitative training validation assessments at the institutions.15%Researches and reviews best practices and current trends in Peace Officer Standards and Training, leadership programs, policy and procedures. Provides recommendations based on practical knowledge and offers suggestions, alternatives, and requests feedback. Delivers recommendations on new training and leadership programs; participates in updating materials based on mandates, laws, rules, directives, statutes, legislation, etc. Provides feedback on existing training programs by applying real-world experience to training and considers stakeholder expectations (such as the Legislature, labor organizations, the media and the public, etc.) and relevant regulations. 15%Assists in identifying long-range training goals and future trends. Facilitates and participates in CPOST Executive Board meetings. Participates in items/matters brought before the CPOST Executive Board. Answers inquiries, formulates responses based on CPOST mandates, guidelines, etc. Forwards responses/documentation for review/feedback/action/approval, and drafts responses/decisions concerning complaints or recommendations as needed. Serves as a resource on institution operations. Assists in establishing and implementing procedures for reviewing and responding to inquiries from interested parties regarding the CPOST rules, regulations, standards, or decisions ensuring professional, timely responses. Research industry training tools, methods, equipment and technology (as applicable), and provides recommendations on those that will further the training standards of the Department. 10%Maintain CPOST required records. Attends meetings as expected and required. Other job related duties as assigned. Statewide travel is required on a frequent basis and may occur on weekends.
