THE ACADEMY IN HISTORY

By Carol Russo, Historian

The history of The New York Academy of Public

Education is reflective of those who served in its

purpose and development. The richness of our heritage

is the result of efforts of the prestigious leaders of the

New York Academy in advancing the progress of urban

education. An educator who has promoted the growth

and integrity of the NYAPE through his many

accomplishments is our President Emeritus, Frank

DeSario.

As Principal of the Woodhaven School (PS 60Q), Frank

has led this NYC Elementary school to a consistent A

rating by the Department of Education and continues to

be in the top 15 percent of all New York City public

schools. In leading The Woodhaven School, Frank has

continued to partner with CEI-PEA with his former

superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Lavin. This partnership

provides support and expertise in many areas of

education.

Currently the Woodhaven School has a partnership with

St. John¡¯s University. This partnership allows the school

to be on the cutting edge of education. This includes the

Rise Program, through which college students who are

studying to become teachers get hands-on experience

by working with teachers and students in the

Frank¡¯s history as an educator includes:

teacher and Dean of the Dyker Heights

Intermediate School, IS 201 and Assistant

Principal of the Robert Goddard Middle School.

for District 27 on the Executive Board of the

Council of Supervisors and Administrators.

awards including: The Cahn Fellowship 2011,

John¡¯s University Department of Curriculum

Frank¡¯s desire to work in education came from

his

father,

Louis

DeSario,

former

Superintendent of District 31. The Louis

DeSario School, PS 56 on Staten Island, is

named in his honor by the former Staten Island

Borough President, Guy Molinari.
