Books have been quarantined at least 72 hoursLibrary collection and processing for Interlibrary LoanThe expectation is that all books/materials on library shelves are safe to circulate via ILL just as they are safe to check out to your library’s patrons.Books/materials may be removed from shelves for interlibrary loan processing by library staff that are following safe handling protocols (hand washing; hand sanitizing; mask wearing)Library staff who process ILL materials are safe because they are following safe handlingNo pre-quarantine of ILL is required because shelved books are safe to circulate!Library materials placed in transit bags are safe.Transit bags are being handled by staff following safe handling protocols (hand washing; hand sanitizing; mask wearing)Totes are wiped down/disinfected and bags are placed in totesSAFETY is a priority – not speed or number of requests filled. Totes are picked up by Freedom Xpress (FX) driver. FX sorters are following their procedures for handwashing, disinfecting, gloves and masks. Driver wears mask. (Please report to FX via Feedback Form if your driver is not masked.)Totes go from trucks to either directly to Portland or via a truck from Brewer depotBags are removed from totes and sorted at Portland sorting facility into library bins.Bags are removed from bins and staged in Portland trucks – or for transport to Brewer to be staged from that location. Totes in trucks are delivered to libraries via routes from Portland and Brewer.Drivers deliver material in totes to libraries.Library staff follow safe handling protocols while (hand washing; hand sanitizing; mask wearing) removing bags from totes. ILL materials are quarantined for 72 hours before checking out to patrons. (Quarantined materials may remain in transit bags or removed from bags based on library space available and individual library preference for quarantine. Please do not quarantine in totes. Totes can be easily washed and disinfected and should not be a part of library quarantine procedures.Books are then checked out to patronsResult: Books have been quarantined at least 144 hours (6 days) with combined quarantines. Materials have spent a minimum of 72 hours on shelves and then another 72 hours at the receiving library.Return of ILL materials to lending libraryNote: This process is very dependent on local ILL procedures and handling of returned items. When a patron returns ILL items to a library, most libraries are quarantining all returned items (whether from their collection or an ILL item) for 72 hours before returning the item via van to the lending library.ILL processing procedures are followed as described above.Van delivery procedures are followed as above. When libraries received items via ILL, their local practice will likely be to quarantine 72 hours before returning to the shelves.Books are returned to the shelves after the 72 hours of quarantine and are safe to lend to local patrons or for ILL.Result: Books returned to library shelves have been handled safely and likelihood of virus on books is minimal. Books have been quarantined at least 72 hours and are free to checkout to patrons or go through ILL.Recommended Reading Possible Signage381000010604502349502984500 ................
