Job Description for English as an Additional Language (EAL) Tutor/Teacher

Job Title: EAL Tutor/Teacher

Reports to: Director of Welfare

Hours: Subject to negotiation, but term time only.

Grade:

Core purpose: To support the work of our existing full-time EAL Teacher. This will be by primarily working with individual and small groups of EAL students who are new arrivals to the country and in order to promote their inclusion and to provide support for teaching and personalised learning.

Duties:

Supporting EAL students’ personalised learning by:

• Leading an induction programme for EAL students who are new arrivals to the school and the UK and working with them on a 1-1 basis during their initial induction period.

• Running 1-1 and small group tuition sessions that develop a student’s acquisition of the English language.

• Supporting students’ learning across the curriculum and tailoring support to match the learner’s needs.

• Supporting students to become independent, co-operative and collaborative learners.

• Supporting a students’ access to learning through the effective use of ICT.

• Assessing students’ progress and supporting them in reviewing their own learning.

• Identifying and removing barriers to students’ learning.

• Adapting and customising curriculum materials.

• Supporting teacher planning.

Meeting students’ additional needs by:

• Supporting the learning and emotional well-being of EAL students including those with dual exceptionalities.

• Promoting student’s well-being.

• Contributing to the management of EAL students’ behaviour and encouraging the student to conform to the schools expectations related to behaviour.

• Supporting students with EAL to access extended school activities.

Providing pastoral support by:

• Promoting EAL students’ well-being and resilience.

• Helping to safeguard the welfare of EAL students.

Supporting the wider work of the school by:

• Complying with school policies and procedures related to Child Protection and Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Inclusion and SEND, Disability Equality Duty, Information Sharing and Data Protection.

• Supporting teachers in the administration of examinations, tests and controlled assessments.

• Contributing to maintaining student records and keep a record of the support given.

• Escorting and supervising EAL students on educational visits and out of school activities.

• Contributing to and supporting the Annual Review process of Statemented Students.

• Contributing to the overall work/aims of the school and appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals to enable the school fulfil its development plans.

• Undertaking training and other learning activities and attending relevant meetings as required to ensure own continuing professional development.

Necessary Experience

• Good standard of general education together with good literacy and numeracy skills.

• Preferably some experience of working with children.

• Be able to use basic technology

• Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, equal opportunities and confidentiality.

• Have the ability to relate well to children and adults, understanding their needs and being able to respond accordingly.

• Good influencing skills to encourage students to interact with others and be socially responsible.

• Experience of teaching/supporting EAL students and to be able to offer another language (s) in addition to English.

• Some experience of TEFL type teaching.

Scope for Impact

Teaching Assistants/tutors in schools make a strong contribution to students’ learning and achievement. Teaching Assistants and tutors provide support to teachers and schools allowing qualified teachers to make even more effective use of their time, professional knowledge, skills and understanding. Teaching Assistants/tutors contribute to students’ learning and will have a significant impact on students’ achievement.

Job Context

Teaching Assistants/tutors will be expected to work effectively with and manage and teach some individual students and/or small groups under the direction and supervision of the Director of Welfare/SEND. They will contribute to, and need to demonstrate skills in, planning, monitoring and assessment and class management. They would also be expected to work as part of a school team and contribute to plans to ensure the school meets its aims.

The post holder must work within the relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation reporting any concerns to the relevant person.

The post holder must have good communication skills to be able to inform, persuade, inspire and motivate students and provide feedback to other professional and parents as required.
