English III Syllabus

1st Quarter: 7 Period Day

Unit 1—The Colonial Period and Puritanism: 30 Days

General Objectives:

1) Read literature of the Early American period

2) Interpret literary elements used in the literature, with special emphasis on plain style and conceit

3) Apply a variety of reading strategies to the literature, with special emphasis on dictionary use

4) Respond to the literature in a variety of modes

5) Learn and use new words

6) Plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread and publish an autobiographical essay

7) Write sentences and paragraphs with coordinating conjunctions

Reading Assignments:

Read the introduction to the Puritan migration pgs 4-14 in PHL TAE

Read “Of Plymouth Plantation,” “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” “Huswifery”

Read The Scarlet Letter

Read The Crucible

Objectives:

1) To understand historical and social forces that shaped culture and society in North America before 1800

2) To identify the influence of history on the literary works of the Early American Period

3) To examine the influence of Puritanism in Contemporary American life

Writing Assignments:

Daily Journal

Quarter essay

Objectives:

1) Plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread and publish an essay

2) Write sentences and paragraphs with coordinating conjunctions

.

Literary Terms

Culminating activities: (optional and you must have signed permission forms for videos)

Video of The Scarlet Letter , have students wear a letter all day representing a “sin”, test on the novel

Video of The Crucible, test on the play

Unit II-The Revolutionary Period: 17 Days

General Objectives:

1) Understand historical and social forces that shaped culture and society in North America before 1800.

2) Identify the influence of history on the literary works of the Early American period.

3) Examine the influence of Puritanism and Rationalism in contemporary American Life.

Read the introduction to Rationalism and the Revolutionary War pgs. 128-138 PHL TAE

Read “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” pg. 102 PHL TAE

Read from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin pg. 142 and from Poor Richard’s Almanac pg.148

Read Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention” pg. 203

Read Phyllis Wheatley’s poem “To His Excellency General Washington” pg. 184

Read Michel-Guillaume Jean de Crevecoeur from “Letters From an American Farmer” pg. 220

Writing Assignments:

Daily Journal

In-class writing workshops on Unit 1 Essay

Objectives:

1) Plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread and publish an essay

2) Write sentences and paragraphs with coordinating conjunctions (refer to activities 1-3 in workbook for further exercises)
