Title: Effectiveness of Clinical Decision Support Tools on Pediatrician Adherence to Peanut Allergy Prevention Guidelines Authors: Lucy A. Bilaver, Monika N. Martusiewicz, Jialing Jiang, Ruchi S. Gupta

This study examines the effectiveness of a pediatrician-designed CDS tool and training on pediatrician adherence to the guidelines. Read the results here, or email cfaar@northwestern.edu for the article!

Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology

Title: Understanding Food Allergy Education Needs in Early Childhood Schools Authors: Sarah Valaika, Avneet Chadha, Jamie Fierstein, Ruchi Gupta

This study aimed to assess the need for food allergy education among early childhood professionals. Data from the 479 surveyed suggests EC professionals frequently witness food-induced allergic reactions in young children and may be required to administer epinephrine even though they feel unprepared. Overall, the study identified the need to improve responses to FA-related emergencies with respect to both treatment and protocol documentation in the early childhood setting.

Shannon Stanfill

Stroke and Neurocritical Care. She's leading the iREACH study as research project manager. With two decades of experience spanning the realms of business and marketing, project management, and research management, she has helped build a stroke research program, managed industry sponsored clinical trials, worked on NIH sponsored longitudinal family studies, helped design an oxytocin-autism study, and managed animal studies. Her passion for healthcare and unyielding curiosity influences her career choices as well as her free time. She travels as much as time will allow, has lived in China, and worked in Uganda while finishing her Master of Global Health from Northwestern University. Shannon is a wife, a mother to twin adopted daughters and a menagerie of pets.

Dannielle Brown

Dannielle graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health and subsequently went on to get her Master of Health Science in Mental Health Studies at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dannielle recently completed her first year of Medical School at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and is excited about taking this year to do research with the Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research. While on the team, she'll be supporting the team's FORWARD, CPS Student Health Leaders, and Food Equality Initiative studies.

Frances Ho

Frances is an undergraduate research assistant for CFAAR. She is from Redwood City, California and is a senior at Northwestern majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Science and Human Culture. She will be matriculating to Feinberg in Fall 2020. Frances joined our team because she wants to pursue pediatrics and learned about large prevalence and impact of allergies on families. At CFAAR, Frances has been working on developing a quality of life survey for Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) patients. She has also been helping with the Student Health Leaders workshop, designed to empower CPS students to be health advocates in their own communities.

5th Annual Chicagoland Women in Science Mixer

On October 23rd, Dr. Gupta was invited to join a panel discussion hosted by the Field Museum Women in Science. It was an amazing opportunity for connection and collaboration among women in the sciences of all ages and backgrounds. To learn more about their initiatives and how to get involved, visit here.

Upcoming Conferences

CONTAINS: COURAGE? FARE SUMMIT 2019

November 1-3, 2019, Washington, DC

The Contains: Courage? FARE Summit will bring together 1,000 members of the food allergy community. Teens and adults can come to learn, find support, and make new friendships.

Dr. Gupta will be attending to present "Innovation on the Cutting Edge: Advances in Research and Strategy", as well as an "Ask the Researcher" session, where she will be covering the current state of research, where the future of research lies, and will be taking questions from the audience!

The CFAAR team is gearing up for the ACAAI conference in just a few short weeks! This year, they'll be presenting four abstracts, and Dr. Gupta will be giving three presentations on food allergy health disparities, the epidemiology of food allergy, and how to prepare for school with FA.
