Welcome to Earth Science

Welcome to Earth and Space Science, a class guaranteed NOT to be the easiest class you will ever take at Broad Run High School, but it should be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding that you take during your years here! Below you will find some useful information and expectations that will help you along with this class. Please read them carefully, review them with your parent(s) and have them sign the last page!! Return the signed paper for credit and then place this sheet in your notebook.

I – Entering the Classroom:

a. When you enter the classroom, please place your books etc. at your desk. When the bell rings I expect that you will be sitting in your assigned seat.

b. As soon as the bell rings we will begin the class with a daily quiz question. This question will be handed in during the first 3 minutes of class. If you are tardy you lose these points.

c. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom during the class period. So you should get everything you need, including bathroom breaks, done during class change. You will be given 5 bathroom passes that can be used throughout the semester. Any remaining passes can be turned in for extra credit at the end of the semester. You are responsible for your passes and they will not be replaced if lost or stolen.

II – Materials:

BRING YOUR BOOK, NOTEBOOK, PAPER, AND WRITING UTENSILS EVERY DAY!!! I will have limited extras of these items and not having things with you is not an acceptable excuse for not doing your work on time.

III – Classwork:

Divide a notebook into sections to keep yourself organized. This is your notebook so keep it organized and bring it every day to class.

a. Assignments: assignments are due at the end of each class period. You will be given ample time in class to finish the work given. If you choose to use your time ineffectively, then you will be graded on the work you have finished. No late assignments will be accepted after the end of the day in which the assignment was due.

b. Notes: notes will be taken in class and may possibly be used on worksheets and quizzes. Makes sure to date the top of the page each time notes are taken to stay organized.

c. Handouts: All handouts will be completed in class and will correspond to the notes of the day.

d. Returned work: Labs, quizzes, and so on that are returned make excellent study guides. These should be kept in chronological order. This will also ensure that the grades posted are correct. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING YOUR GRADE FOR CORRECTNESS!!

IV – Grades:

Check them often! Homework and class work represent 45% of your grade in this class. If you ace all of your tests (100%), but don’t hand in all of your work, the best you can do in this class is… well you can figure it out. Homework is due at the start of the class period only. If turned in later than the first 10 minutes of class it will be counted as late and receive 50% credit!! Late work not turned in by the end of the day it was due will receive a zero score. Tests/quizzes are 50% of your grade and your starter questions are 5% of your grade and depend on your attendance (participation).

Grades will be updated often so that you will always know where you stand in this class. Please observe these on a regular basis!

The grading scale for this class is as follows:

100% - 89.5% A 89.4% - 79.5% B

79.4% - 69.5% C 69.4% - 59.5% D

Below 59.5% F

Your grades are based 5% on daily question, 45% on class work, labs and homework and 50% on tests and quizzes.

V – Tests & Quizzes:

Tests are usually given at the end of each chapter/unit covered. Quizzes will be given often; some will be announced while others will be unannounced. Please prepare for every day and expect a quiz! Tests and quizzes will represent 50% of your overall grade. The format for tests is varied; multiple choice, short answer, open response, essay, etc.

VI – Warm-up Questions:

The grade for the warm-up will be based primarily on your daily quiz – if you are here you will participate in class, but if you decide to miss this class, well, there is no way you can participate. Being tardy will also affect your participation negatively. Being absent repeatedly will also affect your participation negatively.

VII – If you are absent:

Makeups for missed assignments are one day for each excused day missed plus one extra day. Unexcused absences are not eligible for makeup work. Make every attempt to turn in missed work as soon as possible. If you miss a lab you must make this up. Labs must be made up before or after school and must be scheduled with me within one week of the excused absence. Tests will be made up on the NEXT AVAILABLE CLASS DAY! These will be taken during class and you will be responsible for the material missed. In other words, it is best to be in class as often as possible. Remember, make up work is YOUR responsibility!! Any class work or homework not made up within one week of your absence receives a Zero grade!!

VIII –Labs:

1. You may pick your own lab partner(s). If a group does not work well together, I WILL switch the make-up of the group to something more functional.

2. If you cannot find a partner – see me and I will assign you one.

3. ALL lab partners will turn in their own lab write-ups (unless otherwise instructed!)

4. Make sure you and your lab partner leave the lab in a clean and neat fashion. Remember no students will be dismissed until ALL lab stations are cleaned up.

5. Safety is of the utmost importance in the lab. NO FOOLING AROUND will be tolerated!!! If I see you participating in any unsafe activity I will immediately sit you down and you will receive a zero for that particular lab.

IX – Discipline:

1. I WILL follow all school wide rules – please don’t ask me to bend or break them.

2. NO CELL PHONES or iPods (or similar devices)!! You will be able to earn the right to use these at the end of class with good time management

3. Don’t write on the desks or lab tables unless you want to spend your free time cleaning them.

XI – General Rules and Things of Importance:

1. I dismiss the class – not the clock. All students must be in their seats and the area around you (or your lab station if we were in the lab that day) must be clean before anyone may be dismissed. Do NOT line up at the door – that really drives me crazy!

2. Keep your parents aware of what we are doing in here and how you in particular are doing. That way when I call them they don’t act so surprised. (
