Of Interest To All

Rural Life Sunday

Shawano County 4-H celebrates Rural Life Sunday the 5th Sunday after Easter – May 21st. Rural Life Sunday honors rural communities and raises awareness of the challenges they face. Each Club can choose how they wish to observe this day locally.

E-Mail Directory

Would you consent to being a contact person for your club? By getting at least one e-mail address from each club, quicker updates would come your way. Talk about this at your next local club meeting and decide who the contact(s) is/are. Then e-mail your address to:

terri.brunner@co.shawano.wi.us

charlotte.schwartz@co.shawano.wi.us

Also: If you would prefer to receive your Clover Line by e-mail please let us know and we will add you to that list as well!

4-H Softball League

At this point, we have only 4 clubs indicating an interest in supporting a softball team. They are: Maple Grove, Pella, Belle Plaine and Brener. Two of these clubs may not have enough for a full team.  So in light of that, we have decided that for this year, we will have just one day of tournament play without the weekly league play schedule.  We are looking at getting the ball diamonds at Martzke Park in July.

We are also looking at the possibility of just having a fun kickball tournament in June, assigning anyone who comes to a team.  This will be pending getting a suitable location to hold this event.

Can you please let us know if your club has interest to sign up as a club for a full (or part) team for softball?  Knowing that will help us move forward with the planning. Hope to hear from you soon! Even if you don’t know “for sure” just let us know your inclinations.  THANKS in advance! Contact Terri at the UW-Extension office.

4-H Food Stand Remaining Dates

Quite a few flea market food stand dates are still available including: April 30, May 14, July 2, 23 and 30, Aug 27, and Sept 10 and 17 - (that’s 16 shifts). With this many days open, it’s likely that almost every club will need to take a shift, (unless several clubs take an entire day – giving them credit for two cycles)!

Taking one of these dates/shifts after March 1st, will remove you from the required rotation for this cycle (2017). Top of the list is Gresham T & C, Tiger Tribe, Waukechon Wildcats and Wolf River – then beginning again alphabetically. If your club or Key Committee is interested in a full or half day for these dates, contact Charlotte at the UWEX office. Your group is guaranteed a minimum profit of $150 for a full day.

Dates still remaining open on March 27th will be assigned that evening at the 4-H Leaders meeting in the order above.

Hello New 4-H Family,

Welcome to 4-H! If you are reading this letter, you are doing one of the most important things to stay informed…reading the 4-H newsletter, the Clover Line. Every issue contains:

1. Calendar of upcoming events & deadlines.

2. Articles on upcoming events and opportunities for leaders, members, and teens.

3. Registration forms for activities.

4. A number of detailed articles for new families.

Opportunities described in the Clover Line are planned by leaders throughout the county for YOU to help you get the most out of your 4-H experience. Read your Clover Line and give some events a try this year!

FYI

Shawano County Brunch on the Farm will be held on Sunday, June 25th at the Deb Mielke Farm, W12675 Keller Road, Marion. More information will follow.

Record Book Update

4-H record keeping helps start the good habits of setting goals, planning, organizing, evaluating and improving communication skills. Records reflect your character and ability to get things done.

Families, please remember that a few well-chosen pictures are a quick, effective way to communicate what was done in 4-H. Take pictures throughout the year to be put in the record book.

Record books are considered complete without project stories or photos, as long as the member has told about their project work through project record sheets. However, award-winning books almost always include a picture and/or a story of your project year. If you are better at doing “paperwork” on the computer, feel free to access all the project records on our website at and search “record book”.

Earth Day – April 22nd

Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth's environment. Typical ways of observing Earth Day include planting trees, picking up roadside trash, conducting recycling programs, conservation and using permanent containers for water.

Consider doing the following:

* Reduce pollution: carpool, walk or bike.

* Buy recycled content products and recycle them

whenever you can.

* Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.

* Don’t let the water run while brushing teeth.

* Keep drinking water in the refrig – it’s always

cold - rather than running the faucet each time.

* Purchase permanent items rather than disposable.

You can see that there is a new type of label on your newsletter. Yes, another Post Office change. You may get a mailed copy even if you requested it via email. We hope to get that wrinkle out next month. And, no longer the “last name 4-H Family” (software choice to pick one family member). In the meantime, call us only if you know someone NOT getting a copy they requested by U.S. mail.

4-H Summer Camp: July 24-28

A Great Experience and a Great Deal!

Looking for a great experience this summer?

4-H members in grades 2-7 can attend our Resident (overnight) Summer Camp program! Here’s just some of what participants gain: Campers learn to become independent by staying overnight, make new friends, learn to appreciate the outdoors and enjoy outdoor recreation, participate in team-building games and work with our positive role models, well-trained teen camp counselors. 4-H campers can also invite a non 4-H friend along.

Fifth graders will have a day hike learning various camping & hiking skills. The 6th & 7th graders will have an optional campout which will be much more adventurous!

Camp is a great deal because the cost is only $90 (members) for five days and four nights! This includes bus transportation to and from Camp Susan (North of Antigo), all meals, lodging and camp activities. You won’t find a five-day camp anywhere for that price! Sixth and 7th graders can add a 2 hour trail ride on horseback for an additional $20. Some 4-H Clubs help members pay for part of the cost of camp from their treasury. Maybe your club could discuss this idea at your next meeting. Sponsorships are also available from Shawano County 4-H Leaders, Inc. for those in financial need. Contact the UWEX Office at 715-526-6136 for more information. Registration forms will be in the April Clover Line and are already on our website.

Camp & Award Trip

Sponsorships Available

If your family is currently experiencing financial difficulties, sponsorships are available to help with the cost of camp or award trips. Those who would like assistance with 4-H camp could receive $50. In regards to other trips, the sponsorship fund can be used to cover ½ of the member’s portion of the total cost of the trip. There is an application available either from the UW-Extension Office or on our website: ()

4-H Leaders, Inc. Meeting

Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams at State

Shawano County’s 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Dairy Management Teams did extremely well at the State 4-H Contest held on January 28th in Madison.  The Quiz Bowl competition tested the quick wit and extensive knowledge of more than 200 4-H members from 40 county teams.  Contestants answered questions about dairy cattle genetics, health, nutrition, showing and other topics.  Shawano County had one team competing in the Senior Division, one in the Mixed and 2 in the Junior Division.

Thirteen teams competed in the Junior Division with one of our own teams finishing first at the culmination of some very close matches. Team members included Jacob Harbaugh, Griffin Holewinski, Sydney Gwidt & Evan Jauquet. Our other junior team also had a very competitive showing being eliminated just 2 rounds before they would have met the winning team in the finals! Members of that team included Kaylee Ferfecki, Claire Betley, Cooper Uelmen & Hailey Zernicke. The Senior and Mixed teams combined for several wins throughout the day as well. Members of the Senior team included Emma & Maddy Gwidt and Nathan & Whitney Ferfecki. Ben Schmidt, Lydia Gwidt, Allison Zernicke & Logan Harbaugh were the Mixed team members. Congratulations to our team members and coaches who have once again demonstrated that strong effort pays off!

The State 4-H Dairy Management Contest scores youth on their practical knowledge of the dairy industry.  Youth were tested on their knowledge of parts of the reproductive system, identifying and using common tools and technologies in the dairy industry, and working as a team to solve problems that can actually occur on dairy operations. Results of this contest have not yet been announced.

Coaches included Lynn and Sara Harbaugh, Kelly Holewinski, Mandy Ramsburg and Heather Jauquet. Further assistance from youth leader Mason Jauquet was also a big help.  We thank all our coaches for the many hours of instruction they provide our 4-H’ers and to Mrs. Jenny Gracyalny for providing enhanced learning opportunities!

Horse & Horseless Horse Members

There is an informational meeting for parents and members about the new project year on Tuesday, March 7th at 6:30pm.  The meeting will be held in B at the Courthouse (lower level) in Shawano.  This is a REQUIRED meeting for all project members, not just the new members.  In addition to learning about what new events are planned for this year, rules for the fair and getting to know everyone; we will be taking orders for project t-shirts.  Please bring along your calendars, $5.00 if you to order a t-shirt, and a pen for signing project agreements and release of harm.  For more information, contact a horse key committee member or the chairman of the committee, Diane Schnell, 715.853.6139. Dear 4-H Friends and Families:

The wait is over!

I am pleased to announce that Crystal Lepscier will be joining the Shawano County UW-Extension office as our interim 4-H Youth Development agent on March 1st.

Crystal comes to us with significant experience working with youth and volunteers and we are excited to have her join our Shawano County team! We will hear more from Crystal, herself, in next month’s Clover Line. In the meantime, I want to share with you a little about Crystal’s position and UW-Extension’s reorganization.

During the visioning sessions for the 4-H Youth Development position, UW-Extension received strong feedback regarding the need for expanding youth development programming to underserved areas of the county and to youth who haven’t traditionally been part of the 4-H program. Therefore, in her role, Crystal will focus on expanding Extension programming to Shawano County schools, youth organizations, and youth centers through community partnership development and the implementation of relevant educational programs to meet community needs. Crystal will also work with Terri Brunner to provide leadership to youth and volunteer development activities within 4-H, including: summer camps, leadership trips, and the 4-H Older Youth Group. As our county’s 4-H Educator, Terri will continue in her expanded leadership role and will be the primary contact for 4-H clubs, volunteers, and members.

As many of you know, UW-Extension is going through a significant reorganization. The details of how the reorganization will impact Shawano County will become clearer over the next few months. As we are in the midst of this change, you may have noticed I listed Crystal’s position title above as interim. We are hopeful her position will become permanent once the details of the new Extension organizational structure are known.

You can read more about UW-Extension’s proposed future organizational structure here:

On March 1st, please join me in welcoming Crystal to UW-Extension! She brings with her a tremendous enthusiasm for working with youth and volunteers and a passion for making a difference in her community.

Once on board, Crystal can be reached at crystal.lepscier@ces.uwex.edu or (715) 526-6136.

Think spring!

11th Annual Horse Camp: July 14-16

The Horse Camp Planning Committee is in full swing planning another awesome camp! With a variety of clinicians and specialists slated, it promises to be an outstanding event loaded with fun! All 4-H and FFA members are welcome to participate with your horse. The cost of this year’s camp is $80 for early bird registration. That will include the cost of food for you, housing for your horse and a t-shirt. Arrival will be between 10:30am-noon on Friday with a lunch for the campers only provided at noon. Campers will be able to leave after cleaning their stall and camping area on Sunday around noon. The participants will stay overnight in tents inside the Crawford Center.

Due to the high interest already indicated in this camp and the fact we are limiting it to the first 24 participants, register ASAP to guarantee your spot in this great opportunity! Once you have registered, we will send you more information as camp nears. To help keep the cost of camp low we ask that you participate in Horse project fundraisers and food stand date.
