Instructions: Below you will find a plethora of learning activities on the sun, the moon, and all the planets! Your task will be to SELECT a project (brochure, calendar, 3-D model w/information, or poster, children’s book, or comic strip) for the subject chosen (the sun, the moon, or the planets) to complete and turn in! Good Luck and have fun!

Choose one subject: using one of the following project styles.

This project is due April 23rd!!!! Projects will be presented in class on the 23rd and 27th. Turn in the project along with your rubric. 5 bonus points for turning in rubric!

II. The Subjects and information required with each:

1. The Sun: Explain and illustrate each of the following!

a. What does the sun look like? What is it made up of?

b. How hot is the sun at the surface and at its core?

c. What is a solar flare? How does it affect EARTH?

d. How does the sun’s light affect the energy it gives Earth?

e. Where is the sun’s energy more intense? Less intense? Why?

f. How is life on earth dependent on the Sun’s energy? *Explain/illustrate the water cycle.

*Explain/illustrate photosynthesis.

g. What is a solar eclipse? Lunar eclipse?

h. How do the planets revolve around the sun? Which planet is closest to the sun? Farthest?

i. Explain solstice and equinox.

2. The Moon: Explain and illustrate each of the following!

a. What does the moon look like? What is it made up of?

b. How does the moon get its light?

c. Why does the moon have phases? How many phases are there?

d. Illustrate and title each phase. What is waning? What is waxing? Explain and illustrate the position of earth, the moon, and the sun during each phase.

e. Does the moon rotate? Does it revolve around the earth? If so, how long does each take? Explain the “dark side” of the moon? Do we ever see it? Why or Why not?

f. Use the internet to research and report Moon Myths?

Report at least 3 you find interesting? Do you believe the myths? Why or why not?

g. Explain and illustrate a lunar eclipse? A solar eclipse?

h. What is a TIDE? How does the moon affect/cause tides?

What is a NEAP tide? What is a SPRING tide?

3. The Planets: Explain and Illustrate each of the following!

a. How many planets are there? Name them. How many dwarf planets are there? Name them. What is the difference between a planet and a dwarf planet?

b. Explain/illustrate the planets revolution around the sun.

c. What are the four inner planets? What are the characteristics of the four inner planets?

d. What are the four outer planets? What are the characteristics of the four outer planets?

e. Explain and illustrate each planet. Explain facts about each planet: (for earth – see f, g, h, & i)

1. What it is made up of? Rock or gas and/or gas?

2. Average Temperature of the planet?

3. How far away from the sun is it? How long does it take for it to revolve around the sun?

4. Does it rotate? How long does that take?

5. What is its diameter? (How big is it?)

6. Does it have any moons? How many?

f. Which planet, as far as we know, is the only planet able to sustain life? Why is that?

g. Explain Earth’s atmosphere? What are the layers?

h. Explain Earth’s revolution? Rotation?

i. Explain Earth’s seasons? Solstice? Equinox.
