2011 Teepee paintings and their meanings

SAMANTHA ELIJAH My teepee painting was symbolic of beauty and forgiveness. The humming bird is my favourite bird; they remind me of love. They are small, busy and agile. ?The strawberry teaching i?received was that the berry is the first fruit that blooms, the berry is sweet and reminds us that when things are hard, that life is always meant to be sweet. it is the heart berry, and it is during june, the strawberry moon, that all things are forgiven, and all the people are welcomed home with the knowledge they are welcomed and all things are reconciled.?MARIE DELORME The points of the sun represent the four directions and the four elements: earth, wind, fire, water. Rock art, which is common to all ancient indigenous peoples around the world, is depicted by the petroglyph. The birds are our young women leaders flying towards an envisioned future.LAUREN MCCOMBERMy painting was of the Iroquois Six Nations Confederacy flag. Mohawk is Kanien'keha in my language, which means people (ppl is people abbreviated) of the Flint. ELENA ABEL“Feather and the rainbow coloured beads”The coloured beads are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, which are the colours in the ‘rainbow flag’, which represents GLBTQ Pride (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Transgender, Queer & Questioning).? The feather represents Aboriginal people, who traditionally had an acceptance of those who did not fit into strictly defined gender roles, and were accepting of peoples differences (everyone is part of the circle, no one is seen as less than).? I identify as Two Spirited, and although it is not the only thing that defines my life, I wanted to be sure that our tipi included this symbolism as a reminder and call to action.? I’d like for us to take time to consider how our language and our actions can better reflect the value of inclusiveness, which is what our ancestors have taught us.ANGELA JAMES The swirls, colour and magic from the Almighty Sun: the energy and flow that we receive from the Sun Spirit that dances and delights in the growth and harmony of all living things.? The warmth, healing and energy that we draw from the sun is universal to all living beings, especially to the FNMI peoples.? TIFFANY BURNS This is the logo of my First Nation:: James Smith Cree Nation. I love my community. I try to be involved in all aspects of the community. And my lifelong dream of being Chief of my community helps to keep me motivated to improve the conditions of the people. They are my family. The best way to leave my mark is to show my pride for the whole community and my people- my family.VANESSA TAIT My Tipi Painting?represents: Me, my family and my community.? The?wolf paw?represents my spirit name "Stands with the Wolf" woman,?Tait represents my family?name, and OPCN is the?abbreviation of my?community "O-pipon-na-piwin Cree Nation".??This?painting represents who I am, where I come from,?and who my family is,?and?with all these combined makes me?understand where?I am going and never forgetting my roots.CATHERINE MARTIN Chevron or eight-pointed star or starfish & double-curved motif This painting is a reflection of my belief that "things are healthiest when they live in connection to the land" ?The sun/medicine wheel is like balance and life giving force and the land is something I treasure deeply and find very beautiful. I think when one is living a balanced life, the world is made more beautiful and when we are living balanced lives we can give back and contribute so much more to the world. ? ................
