Poems are one of the oldest ways of expressing love. Valentine's Day is a great time to teach students how to write poems for their loved ones.

1. Discuss the different reasons a poem is a great gift on Valentine's Day. (Self-written poems are personal, original, unique, genuine, wellappreciated, inexpensive,..)

2. Ask students to name different kinds of poems. Explain to students what an acrostic poem is (An acrostic poem is a type of poem where the first letter of each line spells another word, usually the topic of the poem.) and give them the following example:

Very very special -

All who know you will agree,

Lovely as a blooming bud,

Each day you grow dearer to me.

Nothing would I rather do

Than sit and spend some time with you.

I do believe you are the best,

Nicest and the friendliest, most

Excellent person I ever did know.

3. Tell students that they will be writing an acrostic poem for someone they love ? a parent, teacher, friend or any other special person ? using the person's name. Assure students that acrostic poems do not have any rules to be followed and are therefore the easiest kind of poem to write. Acrostic poems need not have any rhyme or rhythm, and each

line can be one word, one phrase, one sentence, or a continuation of a sentence ? whatever works for them! 4. Hand out the activity sheet to the students. Advise students to begin by brainstorming different words or phrases that describe or remind them of the recipient and writing them in the box at the top of the worksheet. Students can then use these words and phrases to help them write their acrostic poem on the lines that follow. 5. If the class has recently learnt about alliteration, metaphors, imagery or any other poetic device, you can ask them to incorporate it into their poem.
