Unit 1a: Terms

Terms and their MeaningsIt is important for pupils and students to be aware of the meaning of some of the terms they will commonly encounter in relation to Islamophobia and Islam in general.Indeed, it may be that media portrayal of some aspects of Muslim life and Islam actually promotes misunderstanding, so better to start with some basic terminology and the true meanings. The worksheet is designed ‘crossword-style’, with the ‘clues’ as the explanations and the ‘answers’ the words or terms. The answers are on the crossword sheet so can more easily be fitted into the grid. Of course, to make it more challenging, these terms could be left off – or some of them could for partial completion. They could be looked up as an internet task, for example. It could be group or individual work, or even homework. What is important, however it is done, is that some discussion takes place over the terms. There are important words that will be used a number of times in this topic and do need to be understood clearly, for example, the term ‘stereotype’.Pupils could be asked to put some of the terms into their own sentences to demonstrate understanding.Learning Objectives:Understanding important and commonly used words and their meaningscenter126047500 ................
