ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

BikeWalkKC's mission is to redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living. We envision a community that is barrier free, has complete biking and walking access, and has a connected culture of active transportation and active lifestyles. Education programs are a primary way BikeWalkKC realizes this mission and vision.

YOUTH EDUCATION BY THE NUMBERS

The education team had another record year engaging youth around the KC region and growing program reach.

In total, 5,121 students engaged in Local Spokes programming.

YOUTH EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

EAST HIGH SCHOOL BIKE CLUB

East High School's Bike Club road to KCMO City Hall to accept a bike month proclamation and participate in a discussion about the new KCMO bike plan. Bike Club continues to show success-- evident in more students riding to school after the program. The education team continues to seek opportunities to weave advocacy work into programs.

YOUTH EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

EMERSON ELEMENTARY FAMILY EARN-ABIKE

The education team piloted a new program addition this fall, integrating parent engagement and education into the youth earn-a-bike program.

The first family earn-a-bike class was a wild success. 14 parents and 16 students learned new skills, received bicycles, locks, lights, and helmets, and went on a family bike ride.

PRE-BLAST

Pre-BLAST was a huge success in 2017. 150 students learned how to ride across 10 different schools and there is increased demand for pre-BLAST next year.

Education staff worked on improving and expanding the Local Spokes curriculum to better meet the needs of students.
