For years he had only minor film roles, getting most of his onscreen work in soap operas. This no doubt helped him in his big step forward as the lecherous old actor John Van Horn (AKA “The Tongue”) in Tootsie. FTP name this character actor, probably most familiar as Commandant Lassard in the Police Academy films.

It features the only screen pairing of two of the legends of the silent film era. One being the film's director who reportedly cut his co-stars best bits in their scenes together.
