Progress Memo

Subject: Job Letter and Resume Draft

Class: English 2311-002

Date Due: January 29, 2007

Date Submitted: January 29, 2007

Dr. Art:

In my rough draft job letter I used the email format from our text book as best as I could. I am still a little unclear on the differences between the email and regular letter format though. For my resume, I have used the same format from my example resume. Because of other homework and slight laziness, I tackled this rough draft in one sitting, but it did not take me longer than three total hours. I did not spend a whole lot of time with fonts and formatting. I created one basic format, I thought it looked okay, and I stuck with it.

I do not believe there is anything missing from the assignment descriptions. However, I may have missed something in the description and unintentionally left something out. I think my letter email and resume are a little long, so for the final assignment, I may or may not change the font style or size a little.

I do not really plan to change much for the final assignment. Because some of the information in the letter and the resume are hypothetical, I may add and subtract a few items in order to make my letter and resume look a little more appealing. However, I think most of the information is believable, and I intend on completing most of the items on my resume sometime in the near future. The most important step for me now is to make sure information in my letter and resume match up correctly, and I also may need to make a few sentences a little less wordy and get straight to the point.

Subject: Head Football Coach Applicant

Mr. Sheppard:

My name is Brittin East, and I am a recent graduate from Texas Tech University. A short time ago I came across your head football coaching job advertisement on , and I am extremely excited about the opportunity to apply for the position. At Texas Tech, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences. Coincidentally, I believe I am qualified for the job, and I am fully prepared to meet your expectations because of my education and personal standards. The rest of this letter will explain in further detail how my academic background and prior athletic and life experiences can help the Morristown-Beard School have a successful football program based on integrity and sportsmanship.

I understand that Morristown-Beard is a private school that stresses and exemplifies good character and sportsmanship before athletic competition. I know that your program goal is to provide an environment in which student athletes can learn to compete honestly and successfully in a supportive atmosphere, and I recognize that it is far more essential that players place effort and sportsmanship first among their priorities. I have participated in multiple outreaches for needy people that I believe helped strengthen my character as an individual throughout my life. Some of these include Meals on Wheels and a Christmas Outreach with my church that I do every year. I am a Christian man with firm and sound personal and moral standards. I lead a group of young college Christian men in a bible study weekly, attend college ministry services at the local Indiana Baptist Church weekly, and I am the Fellowship of Christian Athletes secretary at Texas Tech University. Because of my experience in these extracurricular activities, I firmly believe I am capable of leading a group of young men and teaching them the sound physical and mental fundamentals of football and life.

I know you are looking for an experienced coach. Unfortunately, because of my collegiate status, I cannot offer your program much coaching experience at this time. However, I do believe I have enough experience in athletics to get the job done. I played football under one of the wisest, humblest, and greatest high school football coaches the Texas panhandle has ever seen. His leadership and integrity inspires my passion and love for the game, and he taught me the true meaning of football, which is equivalent to what you believe in at your program. Also, I have officiated basketball and football for the last five years, which has solidified my knowledge of the game and its rules. For two years, I have directed over thirty elementary students for the YWCA in Lubbock, TX. Some of my job duties include teaching the kids physical activities and sports. Instructing young students has developed my patience, persistence, and mental endurance a great deal.

I know you have to make a decision soon because I know how much time it takes a new coach to prepare for the next season. I have attached my resume with this letter, and you can email me back at brittin.c.east@ttu.edu, or you can call me at 806-664-2368. I will be expecting to hear from you within the next week. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Brittin East

Subject: Interview Follow-Up Letter

Dear Mr. Sheppard,

I just want to thank you for taking the time to interview me for the coaching job opening at the Morristown-Beard School and for the meal you provided me at the Texas Land and Cattle restaurant on January 31. I really identify with your theories on building the young athletes’ personal character. It is your emphasis on integrity and discipline that makes this job most appealing to me. I am excited at the possibility of taking your football program to the next level.

Sincerely,

Brittin East
