LACROSSE

The 2009 Deep Run Lacrosse season could best be described as a “season of change”. Frank Henofer, our commissioner for the past three years – since we came to Deep Run, retired. Frank’s efforts, commitment, and dedication to our program will long be appreciated. My name is Chris Fechter, and I am proud to be taking over the position of lacrosse commissioner at Deep Run!

This past spring, all of our travel teams participated in numerous tournaments and in our area youth lacrosse league, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Youth Lacrosse Association. While each teams results varied, all enjoyed the experience and relationships developed during the season. Our 3/4th graders had their first taste of “travel” lacrosse as they entered the league, while our intramural 1/2nd grade program had a great time being introduced to the game and experiencing some outside competition.

We lost a number of coaches to graduation, so replenishing our coaching staff will be a high priority as we move ahead. First on our “to do list” will be to increase the awareness of, and participation in, our sport. We have a variety of ideas to help us achieve that goal. If you have a background in or knowledge of lacrosse, or you just want to stop standing around waiting for action to come to you and want to get involved with THE MOST AWESOME SPORT, please contact me at drlax@.

Lastly, we are excited about the addition of a girl’s lacrosse program at Deep Run. Ashley Viall, the Pennridge High School freshman girl’s lacrosse coach has volunteered her time as the girl’s commissioner and has taken the lead on starting girl’s lacrosse at Deep Run. The program will be an introduction to the sport and will focus on the fundamentals of the game, but also offer a competitive environment for the girls to learn and grow in the sport.

Whether boys or girls, our commitment will always be to develop a LOVE AND RESPECT OF THE GAME that will last a lifetime!

Yours in lacrosse,

Chris Fechter, Boys Lacrosse Commissioner

FALL BALL

Who says you can’t play Softball in September, October, and November?

With the approach of cooler weather comes school, Eagles football, Halloween sales...and softball at Deep Run! Starting September 13th and continuing on until November 1st, Fall Ball enters its 5th year of bringing softball fun and instruction to girls aged 3 to 18.

With close to 100 girls signed up and raring to go, Fall Ball offers softball play ranging from Pee Wee Rainbows for girls aged 3 to 4 up to our 14U/18U teams who will compete in the Valley Intercommunity Girls Softball (VIGS) program.

Pee Wees will play a one-hour session each Sunday while our 6U Dew Drops will play an hour and a half. 8U through 12U will participate in about 45 minutes of instruction followed by “pick-up” games where they’ll get a chance to show what they’ve mastered.

For the first time this year, our 10U and 12U teams will play other squads from the surrounding communities every other Sunday afternoon in October. A sort of “Mini-VIGS,” this will give the girls a chance to see what it’s like to play against other leagues as they prepare to move forward to 14U and 18U.

We are also entering our 4th year of VIGS 14U Fall Ball again on Sunday afternoons. As final registrations are being compiled, we may field a second 14U team. In addition, we will have one 18U team made up of players who have been part of the Deep Run family for quite some time.

We will be having a Fall Ball workday on September 12th from 8:00 until? so we can get our fields in the best shape we can for our teams. Come on out if you can with rakes, shovels, and a desire to help our program. And you can even bring a box of doughnuts for the commissioner, if you like.

For further information or to sign up to help out with this fun program, please contact Valerie Curry at vacurry@.

SUMMER BALL

Despite weather which did not cooperate for most of July and August, a crack team of volunteers, headed by Chuck Files, still managed to give the girls from 6U to 18U a chance to come out to the Deep Run complex on Tuesday and Wednesday for some Softball fun.

Free of charge, Summer Ball was a lot like the pickup games that adults played as children (only without roving gangs of neighborhood thugs). In true “sandlot” fashion, the girls chose up sides and went at it for a couple of hours-most of the time they didn’t even keep score!

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed watching the adults melt like popsicles on cement steps!

SUNDAY SELECT

The VIGS Sunday Select teams are formed from Deep Run intramural players who wish to play at a more competitive level than the regular intramural program can provide (plus they get to play more softball!). It is a requirement of VIGS rules that members of a Sunday Select team must also play on a Deep Run intramural team for the entire season.

Sunday Select teams at the 10U and 12U will be forming with tryouts being conducted in late September and October. Check the website () for more information on registration and tryouts.

LADY LIGHTNING TRAVEL

The 2009-2010 season will feature a strong showing by Deep Run as we field teams for 16U, 14U and two 12U teams (12U Blue and 12U Black). Tryouts and practices for these teams have been ongoing at the DRVSA Complex. Once the weather gets cold, the girls won’t miss a beat as they move indoors before spring returns once again and they can continue to show that their organization is the one to beat.

Congratulations to the Deep Run 10U Travel squad for winning the 2009 USSSA State Championship!

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)

The AED will be located in a cabinet on the exterior wall of the Clubhouse (east or softball side) from April 1st through December 1st. With the AED you’ll find a pouch that contains a disposable mask for administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and disposable gloves. In addition, an extra set of electrodes that can be used for children (less than 8 years old and weighing less than 55 lbs) is attached to the AED. Currently, the AED is configured for use on adults; however, the child electrodes are easily attached.

Every year over 350,000 deaths are attributed to sudden cardiac arrest. For many years, CPR was the choice of treatment. However, CPR can only buy time until more effective treatments can be administered. For young athletes, sudden cardiac arrest can be caused by impacts (i.e., a hit, pitched, or kicked ball) or as a result of an undiagnosed heart ailment. Also, many people who visit the DRVSA complex may be older or not in top physical condition which may lead to a cardiac arrest. In addition, there are game officials who, faced with elevated humidity and temperatures while wearing protective equipment, may be subject to cardiac distress.

USE:

Call 911 (Physical address: 953 Callowhill Road, Perkasie, PA 18944). After applying the pads to a victim’s chest, the AED senses ventricular fibrillation and instructs the user to push the button. The shock causes the heart to stop for a millisecond after which the victim’s own electrical system may cause the heart to start beating normally. Since the AED directs the user what to do, a person can’t be accidentally “shocked.”

DEHYDRATION AND YOUTH SPORTS

Don’t think that, just because it’s autumn, it can’t get overly warm for our athletes! As a matter of fact, one of the hottest days of the year happened at a Fall Ball game last September. Children don’t adapt as well as adults to exercise in hot, humid weather. They produce more heat, sweat less, and may be less likely to drink enough fluids during exercise-all of which increase the risk of dehydration. In turn, dehydration can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. You don’t need to worry from the sidelines if you look for signs and symptoms and know how to prevent any heat-related distress.

Who’s at risk?

Any child who exercises in the heat may be at risk, especially if they’re wearing protective gear (i.e., a catcher’s mask, vest, and shinguards).

Symptoms:

Dry or thirsty mouth

Thirst, however slight

Headache

Dizziness

Cramps

Excessive fatigue

Remind your athlete that she is responsible for reporting these signs to the coach right away. Tell them there is nothing to be embarrassed about. If detected early, fluids and rest may be all she needs. If she seems confused or loses consciousness, seek emergency care immediately.

Prevention is the Key

Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after practices and games, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Suggest limiting clothing to whatever is appropriate to conditions. Teach them the signs of dehydration, as well as the importance of speaking up. Involve the coach, too. Tell him or her your concerns and support them if they decide to cancel games or practices due to excessive heat.

REMINDER: The fields will undergo their semi-annual Moyer treatment on September 14th. Please remain off them during that time!

BASEBALL – TRAVEL

Deep Run Thunderhawks 12 year olds finish outstanding Little League careers -

After an undefeated spring travel season, there were high expectations for the 12-year-old Deep Run Thunderhawks. The tournament season began with the boys getting knocked out of their first tournament at Upper Perk fairly quickly. Shortly thereafter, the Thunderhawks turned their season around and won the championship in the last two Little League tournaments of their careers and followed that with an amazing run at Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Weather was not cooperating at Upper Perk when the season started. A rain soaked one run win followed by two one run losses ended the UP tournament a little too quickly for the Thunderhawks. One of the losses was to rival Pennridge. Deep Run spent the next month waiting for revenge.

The Little League tournament was next. Things were going great after Deep Run defeated a Northampton team who had not lost a district or sectional game in three years. With a record of 4-1 in the Little League District 30 tournament the team was staring at a district championship. Unfortunately a loss in the district winners’ bracket finals led to the end of any possible trip to Williamsport. The team was just beginning to gel when the tournament season continued after Little League.

A trip to Harleysville for a 50-70 tournament immediately followed Little League. With a focus on the District 30 tournament, the team had no time to prepare for the rule changes that came with the longer bases and longer pitching distance. Now allowed to lead, Deep Run went undefeated in pool play and found themselves in the playoffs with three teams who had played nothing but 50-70 for the past two years. A lack of experience hurt the Thunderhawks and fourth place finish was the result.

The success at Harleysville carried over to the Pennridge tournament. The team again went undefeated in pool play and totally dismantled all competition. The home runs were flying out at Pennridge as Deep Run entered the playoffs as the number one seed. A quick blowout victory over Lower Gwynedd took the Thunderhawks to the finals against a very tough Oreland team. Two first inning runs were enough to take the championship since a no-hitter was thrown for Deep Run. This 2-0 victory was just the beginning of a great run to end the 12-year-old travel season.

Coming off a championship at Pennridge and being back at home at the Deep Run Field of Dreams tournament had the Thunderhawks’ confidence soaring. After a scare from a strong Pennsbury team to open pool play, the boys stepped it up and again went undefeated heading into the playoffs. The semifinal game was against another undefeated team from Hatboro. Hatboro had dominated all three previous opponents and felt that they were the team to beat in the tournament. The game was close until the fifth inning when the Deep Run bats exploded for eight runs. The game ended after the fifth due to the mercy rule with Deep Run winning 12-2. The final game for the Deep Run Thunderhawks on a Little League field was on the horizon. Who would be waiting for Deep Run in the championship game? None other than archrival Pennridge. For four years the cross-town rival had dominated this match up and they were never shy about sharing their success. The Thunderhawks jumped out to a quick lead early and eventually carried a three run lead into the fourth inning. A home run by Pennridge in the fourth inning and another in the fifth put a scare into Deep Run. Eventually the defense came through and the Thunderhawks took a second straight championship by a score of 3-2. This was clearly the highlight of a great four-year travel baseball experience. A trip to Cooperstown a few days later may have changed some people’s opinions.

Cooperstown Dreams Park is a remarkable place to play baseball. There are 22 pristine fields and the boys sleep in a barracks with 10 sets of bunk beds. A little too much fun away from the field can sometimes lead to some struggles on the field, but these boys were focused and ready to play ball. The tournament consisted of 104 of the best teams in the country. A 4-2 record in pool play gave the Thunderhawks the 32 seed heading into the playoffs. After beating the 33 seed 7-2, the team was staring the American Avengers in the face. The American Avengers are an all star team from Houston, Texas who plays year round. They were the number one seed and had outscored their opponents 126-3 in their six previous games. None of their games had gone past four innings due to the mercy rule. Hundreds of fans lined the field to watch the Avengers destroy another opponent. Deep Run made a name for themselves and definitely found a few hundred new fans when the game went into the sixth inning with the score 3-1 Avengers. After a Deep Run player reached base, the fans were going crazy. Unfortunately the Thunderhawks could not get any runs home and the game ended 3-1. The Avengers went on to dominate several more opponents and won the tournament championship game 9-1. No other team came close to holding the Avengers to only three runs. Deep Run did not win the game on the field, but they gained the respect of a countless number of people that day. Never has a coach been any more proud of his team after a loss. The experience at Cooperstown was one that all the boys will remember forever.

It has been a joy to coach such a great bunch of boys over the last four years. They grew as players, and more importantly, as people. I expect great things from the group of kids in the future. The players on this year’s team included Aaron Crosson, Angelo Vitantonio, Blake Shoenmeier, Brad Misialek, Dan Shane, Evan Tice, Frankie Kerrigan, Joe Molettiere, Jon Long, Matt Carbonaro, Seth Frankenfield, Stephen McNally, Will O’Shea and Zack Muredda. The coaches were John Muredda, Jeff Misialek, Barry Tice and Manager Anthony Molettiere.

2009 – 11 Year Old Deep Run Thunderhawks

It was a tremendous year for the 11U Deep Run Thunderhawks Travel Team. During the season the team participated in 3 local tournaments – Deep Run’s own “Field of Dreams”, Upper Perk & Pennridge – as well as in Little League’s District 30 tournament. The team finished with an overall record of 14-8-1 (10-4-1 in the local tournaments & 4-4-0 in the L.L District 30 tournament). Proudly, the team finished with two Second Place finishes and one Fifth Place finish in the local tournaments. The team also made it to the finals in the Little League 11U District 30 Tournament, losing to a tough Newtown team.

The Deep Run Thunderhawks 2009 11U Team:

Manager:

Shawn Harty

Coaches:

Duane Freed, John Musco

Players:

Tanner Boone, Frankie Buccafuri, Matt Firuta, Tyler Freed, Ryan Gordon, Shawn Harty, Mitchell McCleod, Justin Musco, Todd Nonnenman, Paul Stuebing and Kevin Xander.

Once again the coaches and I would like to thank ALL of the parents and families of the players for their continued support and dedication to the Deep Run travel program. A very special “Thank You” goes out to; FOD Tournament Director, John Musco and also to Team Fund Raising Coordinators, Connie Freed & Dawn Musco, your hard work and effort is very much appreciated by everyone. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication we once again had a successful fund raising season, raising another $5,000+ to go towards the boys “Cooperstown Experience” in 2010. Thanks again everyone!

During this year’s off-season we will continue to further the team’s experience through continued training and scrimmages. We have seen the boys improve year after year and they continue to work very hard and are making tremendous strides to becoming a GREAT team. The coaches and I are very excited and optimistic about this team’s future.

In closing, we had an enjoyable and exciting 2009 travel season and look forward to a very SUCCESSFUL 2010 season next year. Thanks again for a great season, Go Thunderhawks!

Shawn Harty

10 Year Olds

The Deep Run Thunderhawks 10 year old team season started with an impressive turnout for tryouts. We participated in several local tournaments, which include our own Field of Dreams tournament as well as the Pennridge and Quakertown tournaments. In addition, this group of boys competed in the District 30 Little League Tournament for the first time. Almost all of the games that we participated in throughout the four tournaments were decide by one run. Our team showed a tremendous amount of improvement from last year. With a lot of hard work and determination, this team proved that they can compete with the very best teams in the area. The parents of these boys also showed that they are among the best by hosting a very successful tournament at Deep Run. The teams that enter our tournament all go away very impressed with our Deep Run complex and how well we run our tournament.

- Steve Siwert, 10U Manager

The 9-year-old Thunderhawks ended the season with a 6-7 record. In their final tournament, they played their best baseball finishing 3-1 and 5th out of 14 teams. After starting the tournament red-hot, the bats cooled off a little and the season ended with a 10-6 loss to Lenape Valley.

The team did a lot of good things over the season, had fun playing as a team, and hopefully learned some life lessons along the way. Three of the tough losses were by 1 run but they shook it off and came ready to play the next day. The boys played hard and made many nice plays in the field. They received a lofty compliment when a coach from an opposing team thought that this group of 12 were their toughest opponent that they played against this year. I think we are looking forward to next year all ready!

Contributing to this years team were Chase Bifolco, Noah Cweiber, Evan Freed, Brett Henofer, Edward Kerrigan, Connor Mart, Michael Molettiere, Michael Petteruti, Cole Rand, Kolby Rush, Daniel Sabath, and Kyle Yoder. Overall the boys enjoyed a good travel baseball season.

BASEBALL – Connie Mack

Connie Mack A, Gerry Meyle mgr.

I would like to thank all the players for the class they showed, their coachability, their talent, and their teamwork. This was truly a team of role players where everyone did their best to contribute to a team effort in playing this game. We were one of the youngest teams in the league with a total of 8 players eligible to play again next year, and only one returning player. I would like to thank Pete Leatherman for sharing his time with us and the Legion team, and wish him, Matt Dubyk, and Drew Decew the best in their endeavors for the future.

We went with a primary roster of 11, which was difficult during the month of June, but many of the B1 team that were part of our roster stepped up when needed and filled in without missing a beat. Thanks to Torey Bingaman, Zack Steubing, Phil Allebach, Brigham Lewis, Ethan Rice, Carter Peters and Pat Duggan for filling in when needed.

Despite having one of the youngest teams in the A division, we finished 12-8 for the regular season, qualifying as the 4th seed for the Buxmont playoffs, and went 1-2 during the playoffs. We also won a scrimmage against Lansdale bringing our season record to 14-10. Not too shabby for a young team.

I also like to thank a great coaching staff of Rich Kessler, Mike Neuman and Jerry Leatherman. Couldn't run a team without them.

Also thanks to a great selfless group of parents, who helped prepping and/or cleaning up the field, running the scoreboard, etc. even helping prepping the fields on away games (thanks to everyone and Jim Steubing at C.D.)

Not to forget Kevin Decew for his scorekeeping and bench coaching, and when he wasn't their Ray Unangst and Phil Allebach Sr. for doing the book.

Connie Mack B1, Bill Bingaman, mgr.

Thanks to Brooke Lewis, Jim Groff, and Kevin Brown for all their time & efforts in helping to coach a great group of young men.  Special thanks to Phil Allebach, Sr. for being there to keep score and cheering the team on each & every game.

I wanted to thank the boys for the privilege and honor of coaching them.  It was truly a heck of a ride and speaking on behalf of all the coaches - we could not be more proud of them.

Their efforts and attitude this season was truly a marvel and pleasure to watch.  Baseball is a very difficult game; mentally & physically; and can easily take its toll on a young players' confidence.

Success is achieved only 3 or 4 bats out of 10; so it is easy to become frustrated & disappointed. They learned this season to not allow minor setbacks to achieve them; and they were always looking forward.

I would like to give special recognition to Logan Diehl, Brigham Lewis & Petey Hibbert for their attitude and always striving to become a better player.  They all started slowly and struggled at the plate but they never let it affect their play in the field. Logan pitched great throughout the year & Brig play great defense no matter where I put him.  Logan & Brig really came up big at the plate & field during the playoffs and it can be attributed to their hard work and positive attitude. Petey missed a lot of games early -(working to help stimulate the economy) but the coaches were all very pleased with his effort and attitude as we progressed through the playoffs. It would have been easy to him "go south" but he played hard, had a lot of quality at bats, good defense and great attitude through all 42 innings that were our playoffs.

Overall - in 42 innings of exciting playoff baseball - Deep Run had only 4 errors; great defense by everyone.  All our pitchers did an outstanding job under tremendous pressure - especially when the strike zone was a moving target. (Wow, can he say that? LOL!)

Congratulations once again to Josh, Pudge, Zach, Ethan, Carter, Phil, Jake, Matt, Tyler, Brig, Logan, Pete & Tory.

The Connie Mack B baseball team enjoyed a very nice season going 8-7-1. After a slow start to the season, 2-5-1, the boys came back strong in the second half of the season and went 6-2. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and we missed the playoffs by one point. The team was coached by Chris McElwee, and his assistants were Jeff Xander, Joel Gordon and Paul Firuta. All the coaches agreed that this team kept getting better each week they played.

The team members are as follows: Josh Apple, Travis Cliggett, Eric Drugotch, Joe Firuta, Jake Gordon, Joe Hibbert, Christian Lizana, Chase Marshall, CJ McElwee, Nick Stenderowicz, Matt Stritzl and Jeremy Xander. Each boy contributed to making this a successful season for the Connie Mack B Team.

The Deep Run Connie Mack B team (Duggan) had a successful season but unfortunately fell a couple of points shy from a playoff bid.  Overall the team outscored their opponents in total runs 117-112 and committed only 35 fielding errors over a 16 game season.  Offensively the team had a strong on-base percentage led by Pat Duggan, Dillon Lynch, Ben Schweitzer, Jon Swartz, and Joe Unangst.  Most of the team’s runs were scored both at the beginning and ending innings, which demoralized their opponents.  Defensively, the team relied upon sound baseball techniques through the efforts of Shane Galloway, Ben Lippincott, Joe Longo, Mark Michetti, AJ Molettiere, and Evan Swanger to hold their opponents to less than a run per inning 70% of the time.  A good time was had by all and the boys anticipate making some noise in the playoffs next year.

John McIntyre, mgr

The Deep Run Connie Mack C team had a successful year not just measured in record but player development.

▪ We had 3 players who never played baseball before and they all developed their baseball skills

▪ We fell 1 game under 500 but at one point this season won 4 games in a row!

▪ Our pitching was our bright spot.  The boys keep us in every game.

▪ While we has our challenges at the plate I think the boys made great strides in learning how to hit!

John McIntyre, mgr
