Dear Parents,

Years ago, when my children were very young, my Christmas letter focused on the question of "What is success?" So often in our lives society labels success as achieving the big house, the nice car, and the power job. Yes, these are types of success, but I would argue that there other, perhaps more rewarding signs of success. I remember writing about the "small" successes that my children had made; Austin's first sleep-over; Bryson signing before he spoke; Chelsea holding my finger for the first time. These are all successes. Driving to Renaissance this morning I again thought of the recent successes of my children: Bryson achieving his goal of skydiving; Austin spending two semesters in South America; Chelsea understanding my signing of "Bryson is coming home!"

As I reflected on the accomplishments of my children, my thoughts drifted to your children. I have seen many triumphs this fall. They come in all shapes and sizes; some are academic; some are social; they all have changed your children and made them grow.

I have seen students take an active role in citizenship. After our letter writing campaign on the problem of homelessness, students began noticing differences in the responses they received from the elected officials. Several students noticed that some letters did not address their initial questions. These students wanted to write more letters asking for a more specific response! Your children are becoming active participants in our democracy.

While correcting math journals, I noticed many of the students had jotted down a phrase I say in class constantly-- "don't give up!" Watching kids work together, persevering through a difficult problem and then saying, "Oh! I get it!" They are choosing not to give up and that is success.

I have seen students reach out to each other to comfort and help. For middle school that is a huge step; becoming aware of others and developing empathy.

And on Tuesday I saw your children reach more goals, have more successes. I sat in the audience proud to be part of your children's lives. I look forward to 2016, working with your children and helping them recognize all they can achieve.

This winter break my hope is that you, too, will recognize the successes of your children, both large and small.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Karen Amaya Head Teacher Renaissance School of Arts and Reasoning
