Rubric for AP chemistry Research Report and Presentation

1. Choose a topic that interests you that is related to chemistry, can be a topic that we briefly covered and you want to know more, or 3 elements from the periodic table that are somehow related (you have to explain that in your presentation) or 3 famous chemist (you have to explain what is the relationship between them in your presentation). You can also choose to present your topic of research from the research class.

2. Find at least three references that may be a combination of RELIABLE Websites (wikipedia is not acceptable) , journal articles and books.

3. Write up an introduction (at least one page) discussing the background of your topic and reasons why you selected that topic.

When you are ready to write your report, it must meet the following criteria:

1. Your report must be a minimum of five pages of text, double-spaced, with a font size no bigger than 14. (Any readable font will be accepted).

2. Your must have a correctly formatted bibliography at the end of your report. (Minimum of three references). See your English teacher for help with this or consult the MLA Handbook.

3. Every proposed fact, quote (or restated quote), data chart, graph and picture must be footnoted in a correct format. Again, see your English teacher for help with this or consult the MLA Handbook.

4. Your report must include an introduction, a body of research information and a conclusion about what you learned. In the conclusions indicate at least five interesting facts that you learned by doing the project.

5. You must also do a 10 – 20 minute presentation on your report. It can be a chalk-talk, poster-board, PowerPoint, video or any other means approved by your teacher.

Here is how you will be graded: The report 50 % of the grade

• Report is neatly written, double-spaced with appropriate size and style font, and contains no spelling or grammatical errors. Also, you must have a title page (cover page) (5 points)

• Report must have a correctly formatted bibliography. (5 points)

• Introduction covers the background of your topic, is accurate, shows personal interest and is a minimum of one page in length. (5 points)

• Body of report is directly related to a chemistry topic and includes as much of the following if applicable: (30 points)

i. Chemical names and/or formulas, chemical reactions and/or equations,

ii. Data tables, measurements with proper units,

iii. Chemical history and/or application

iv. Information that relates to a specific chemistry topic or topics. (Example: bonding, organic chemistry, etc.)

v. Historical background

• Conclusion should sum up what you have learned (not just restate your

introduction) and may include suggestions for future work. (5 points)

Presentation . The presentation 50%. Each classmate will grade the presentation using the rubric below.
