QUALITY ASSURANCE

Quality Assurance Sessions Held

Over the last couple of months, over 600 Morrow County 4-H and FFA youth and hundreds of parents attended the annual quality assurance sessions.  Without the help of professionals and volunteers we would have a difficult task to accomplish this required event.  I want to specially thank the local FFA Agriculture Teachers for working together on testing opportunities.  Also, thank you to Julie Logan, Jr. Fair Board members and Jr. Fair Board advisors, for helping teach, plan, and make the sessions run smoothly.

** IF YOU MISSED QA –

CONTACT THE EXTENSION OFFICE IMMEDIATELY! **

If you are not familiar with Quality Assurance, it is a requirement of Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Morrow County Agriculture Society for all animal projects to attend a session annually.  Each year youth must learn 3 of the 10 Good Production Practices at a minimum of 1 hour.  In addition to the educational sessions youth ages 12 and older can take a test based on the Quality Assurance sessions they have attended over the years.

Thank You Morrow County Pork Producers!

Thank you for feeding many of the QA participants and helpers for FREE! Your donations are appreciated!

Do You Have All The Project Books You Need?

Several of our project books have supplements or extras that go with them. You can check the “Ohio Family Guide to 4-H” (green) or contact our office at (419) 947-1070 and ask.

Club Project Book Support

With the increased cost of project books at the state level from $3.00 to $5.00, we were once again able to give our members a discount, thanks to the generous donation of over $1,200 from Central Ohio Farmers Cooperative and the Land O' Lakes Foundation.  This is still a very big donation and we would like to thank them for their generosity.  Please take a moment and send them a thank you card or take a thank you poster to the Mt. Gilead branch.  You can send thank you's to:

Central Ohio Farmers Co-op Inc., Attn: Phil Hulse, P.O. Box 152, Mt. Gilead, Ohio 43338

and

Central Ohio Farmers Co-op Inc./Land O' Lakes Foundation, Attn:  Tom Bostic, 730 Bellefountaine Ave.,

What's 4-H Still Project Judging Like?

NEW: Check out our example videos on our website ()! We also have a video on “Proper Posters”.

1.  Make sure you have all the requirements for your project(s). These requirements were inserted in your project book (most are on pink paper) or can be found at the Morrow County website: .

2. Dress and present yourself neatly and clean.  Clothing projects are required to wear their clothing projects at judging.

3.  Arrive to the judging location at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time.

4.  After arriving, check in with the Jr. Fair Board and follow their directions.

5.  Once to the judging table, introduce yourself to the judge.  They will ask you

questions about your project.  Be prepared to tell the judge all the things you learned and did.  The judge can't read your mind! The more you can tell and show what you have learned the better.

6.  Once the judge is done with your interview, they will give written comments and give you a grade of A, B, or C.  You may be eligible for other awards, but they will not be announced until later in the newsletter.

7.  Once you have been judged you are free to leave.  Clothing projects will need to be judged as a project group for regular judging and attend the evening Style Review to be eligible for State Fair.

If you have any other questions about judging ask your club advisor or contact the Extension Office.

4-H Camp Crafts

In the last newsletter, we asked for camp craft items that we plan to put to good use. You did very well – we got a big bag of yarn, a box of buttons and some fabric. Thank you very much to those folks that brought them in. We are still hoping for:

- Old CD’s (not to play but to break up, paint, make into weaving wheels etc.)

- CD cases are good also. We make them into picture frames, etc.

- Fabric that you no longer need. It can be small scraps to lengths of fabric. We do not want anyone going out and buying any, just what you have and no longer want around. The fabric that came in looks like it was meant for quilting, already in about 4” squares.

- More buttons would be appreciated. Plan to use them for bracelets, framing, kid designed pictures, etc.

- Old jeans that are no longer wearable but could be patched out

- T-shirts are always useful for so many crafts. We have made rugs, baskets, pillows, back-packs, and this year we might do easy fringed bags. Any size will work.

- If you have any craft paint that you may have used for a project but no longer have use for it that would be great, too.

- Old canning jars, any size that you no longer need or can give away.

We are also in need of a “Bear Costume”. It needs to fit a teen or adult.

If you have any of these items, please drop them off at the Extension office and we will put them to good use. If you have items that you think might be usable for craft projects like string, ribbon, beads, leather lacing, embroidery hoops, old ties, felt, etc., etc., etc., we will take it now or anytime of the year. Think of us when you are doing a clearing out! Thanks very much.

Junior Leaders

The Junior Leaders meet the last Monday of June at the Extension Office from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Our next event that we are planning will be the “Annual Mo-Mazing Chase”. Look for how to enter below and join in on this fun event!

It would be great to have more of you, 7th grade through 18 years of age, join us and help expand on what we can accomplish.

The definition of a leader according to the dictionary is “one who leads”. Pretty simple but doesn’t say much. I think a leader is one that steps forward when a volunteer is asked for; one that expresses ideas and opinions to help better those around them as well as themselves; one that gathers others around to accomplish a task or tasks; one that can laugh at themselves when something they do may not turn out but does not laugh or condemn others and cause dismay if it happens to them. There are a lot more definitions of a leader and I hope you are thinking of them right now.

Come join us and show what kind of leader you are and hope to become.

MoMazing Chase 2015

The Morrow County 4-H Junior Leaders are planning the Annual MoMazing Chase to be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

We are asking the youth groups of the county (4-H clubs, FFA’s, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school groups and church youth groups) to join us in a morning of spirited fun and challenges to be named the MoMazing Chase Champions of 2015.

Teams are to be a minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 youth with 1 adult per every 4 youth to accompany them. The age limit will be 8-18.

We will begin at 9 a.m. and end when all the teams have returned to the fairgrounds.

The teams will be “chasing” through Mt. Gilead by foot and completing challenges in order to move on to the next location/challenge. There is to be NO use of motorized vehicles to transport team members or adults on the course. We also ask that those that are not part of the team, youth and adults, stay at the fairgrounds and off the course.

We encourage each group to make it fun by coming up with team names, t-shirts, costumes, etc.

We will send more information to the leader/adult in charge after the initial information is received. More than one team from a group is acceptable and encouraged.

This event will take several hours on what we plan to be a sunny, pleasant morning in Mt. Gilead.

Please fill out the information below and return it by August 1, 2013. We hope to hear from you soon!

JUNIOR FAIR INFORMATION

The sunshine seems to have found its way back to Ohio.  Love the warm spring days.  Along with these warmer days, I see more and more projects taking off in preparation of fair.  Don't forget that the book work needs done as well.

Quality Assurance was well attended.  We would like to thank those that took their time to help teach.  Also thank you to those of you who helped make sure exhibitors were here.  This is a very important piece of the puzzle for kids with a livestock project.

The next piece that needs done is to make sure you get your ENTRY FORMS to the Jr Fair Office.  These are different from enrollment forms that were due the end of April to Becky at the Extension Office.  You must have an ENTRY form if you are going to show at the fair.  Also enter ALL possible animals or projects that you wish to show (this includes cooking, sewing, misc, crops ,gardening, etc.)  ONE ENTRY PER LINE.

Pre Fair Weigh-in registration will be held June 6, from 7-11am.  This is for ALL Feeder Calves, Market Goats, Market Sheep, and ALL Breeding Rabbits.

PLEASE bring all possible animals for these groups that your exhibitor may show.  If you miss this day you WILL NOT be able to exhibit at fair. Market SWINE will tag and register like last year.  If you need tags or paper work please call the office or Julie. This paper work is due in the office by June 7, 2015.

Preregistration for early judging is helpful. This helps determine how many judges we need to hire.

We would like to congratulate all graduating exhibitors, and wish you the best in the next chapter of your life.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call.

Office 419-947-1567

Have a fun and safe Summer.
